Today through Tuesday night:
Low clouds continue to linger across southern Wisconsin early this
morning. As weak high pressure begins to build into the Great
Lakes Region today, the clouds will clear. Highs should be in the
middle to upper 20s, today with the overnight lows expected to
drop into the single digits to teens.
For the mid-week system, current guidance has shifted the track of
the low and upper level trough southward. With the track of the
low further south, we'll have a good amount of colder air in place
from start to finish. With colder air in place across southern
Wisconsin, there is no longer as much uncertainty with
p-types as we're expecting mostly snow throughout the event. The
only outlier at this time, is the GFS which brings warmer air
into central Wisconsin Wednesday morning. With every other
model/guidance keeping the warmer air much further south in
Illinois. This gives us much higher confidence in a completely
snow driven event.
There will still be a surge of decent moisture into southern
Wisconsin Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. The right
entrance region of the upper jet and LLJ have also moved further
south which provides good support for precipitation overspreading
the area. This has set the stage for some moderate to heavy
snowfall expected across southern Wisconsin.
Stuck around the 50th percentile of model guidance for snowfall
totals. This is in large part to due the uncertainty of the track
that still remains. With such a large shift from the previous
guidance to now, it is not out of the question that the higher
snowfall totals could shift further southward.

Wednesday night through Friday:
Shortwave energy is progged to lift across the Upper Great Lakes,
with large-scale lift being replaced by subsidence as high pressure
moves in behind the departing storm system. As cold air advection
works into the region behind the departing system, expect a cool
down for Wednesday night/Thursday. Thursday night cloud cover will
be on the increase ahead of the approaching system from the south,
along with increasing east-northeast winds as the surface pressure
gradient increases.
On Friday, there is the *potential* we may see impacts from the
above noted system as it tracks just east of the area. Right now,
all solutions are on the table from the ECMWF maintaining a western
track of the storm system across lower Michigan, which would favor
widespread snow across the area. The other extreme, where we see
nothing out of this system as it tracks well to our east per the
Canadian, is also on the table. Did not make changes to the NBM and
did maintain a chance of snow for Friday/Friday night. It should be
noted, if we do end up seeing snow moving into the area on Friday
there could be a window of lake-enhanced snow over southeast
portions of Wisconsin as lake waters are still in the upper
30s/lower 40s. This is certainly a time period to again, keep a
close eye on as we get closer.
Upcoming Weekend:
Overall, quiet weather looks to prevail this weekend with gusty
winds at times and increased cloud cover. A clipper system looks to
track across the Upper Great Lakes, but should remain well north of
the area. Early next week, a progressive pattern looks to setup
across the CONUS with number of waves progged to track across the
CONUS. Thus, we could see a few more chances for precipitation and
active weather.

Stratocu has exited with mainly mid clouds upstream. With broad
cyclonic flow into this evening this cloud deck may make it into
at least our northern areas. Otherwise high pressure in control
with VFR conditions through Tuesday morning. Next storm system
approaching the area may bring some snow chances into SC WI
Tuesday afternoon.

As low pressure over Michigan moves eastward out of the Great
Lakes Region, high pressure will be moving in from the northern
Plains. This will briefly cause the pressure gradient to tighten
this morning giving Lake Michigan some gusty winds. A few gusts
may reach gale force this morning over the open waters, but are
not expected to be frequent enough or cover enough of the lake to
warrant a Gale Warning. The winds will then gradually weaken
throughout the day today. The Small Craft Advisory will remain in
effect through the evening hours today. Overnight tonight, the
winds will be light and variable as high pressure passes across
the southern half of the lake.
