.UPDATE...

The clear skies, light winds, and rainfall earlier today have set
the stage for widespread fog development tonight. Many locations
have already dropped to 1/4 mile or less and a Dense Fog Advisory
has been issued and lasts until 10am.

.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...

Widespread dense fog is expected tonight and should continue until
13-15z before starting to lift. Winds increase out of the S/SW as
a warm front moves through the region. Then scattered showers with
embedded thunderstorms are possible after 18z. However, timing of
storms into the TAFs remains uncertain and have added a VCTS for
now. Expect cigs/vsbys to drop to IFR under the stronger storms.
A cold front will swing through the region Tuesday evening with
winds switching to the W/NW and increasing. This will likely lead
to another round of low clouds and fog Tuesday night into
Wednesday with dense fog possible again.

UPDATE...

All showers and storms have shifted south into Illinois this
evening. Light winds tonight coupled with only passing high clouds
could allow for fog to develop. In fact much of the area has
dewpoint depressions drop to near zero and could start to see
patchy fog develop soon. Models are all pointing to the
possibility of dense fog tonight into Tuesday morning and a dense
fog advisory might be needed at some point tonight. Right now
though, will wait to see what impact some of these higher clouds
might have on fog.

MARINE...

Low clouds and fog are expected to develop across much of the lake
tonight and Marine Dense Fog Advisories have been issued for both
the open waters and nearshore. The rest of the forecast is on
track.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 616 PM CDT Mon Apr 27 2020)

UPDATE...

A few isolated thunderstorms are forming along a weak boundary in
SW WI, where there is an axis of weak instability. These should
weaken as they move eastward into the more stable air. Will keep
thunder chances going for another hour or two and then all precip
should end. Still going to have to watch out for fog chances
tonight. The rest of the forecast is on track.

AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...

Some clearing behind the exiting showers is expected this
afternoon and early evening hours. Then in the more humid airmass
cigs and vsbys should begin to lower as fog and low clouds
develop. Widespread fog with some dense fog possible are expected
after midnight and continue through 13-15z Tuesday. A system
approaches from the west on Tuesday increasing chances for
showers, however there is still some uncertainty as to where the
heaviest showers and thunderstorms will track. Have left out the
mention of thunder in the TAFs for now. Locations along Lake
Michigan could see the lower cigs/vsbys linger for much of the
day.

SHORT TERM...

Tonight through Wednesday night...Forecast confidence medium.

Light to mdt showers will mostly exit se WI in a couple hours.
Farther to the west, there is a slight chance for tstorms into the
early evening as very marginal CAPE forms along a weak sfc
trough.

For tnt, the weak sfc trough will dissipate over srn WI with cool
and moist conditions likely leading to widespread fog and stratus
development. Dense fog will be possible from 08Z-13Z but could
linger near Lake MI for much of Wed.

For Tue-Wed, a digging and amplifying upper trough is expected
from the Dakotas to WI and IL. A slow developing sfc low will
track along the IL border for Tue nt and occlude over Lower MI for
Wed-Wed nt. Another good shot of low to mid level warm, moist
advection and frontogenesis will bring showers and sct tstorms to
srn WI for Tue afternoon and night. A SVR risk will exist near the
triple point which is expected to move across far sw WI late in
the afternoon and then along the WI and IL border. CAPE values are
expected to be low but with good wind shear. There will be poor
lapse rates north of the low track so elevated CAPE is minor, thus
keeping the SVR threat along the low track and effective warm
front. For Wed-Wed nt, cool and showery conditions are expected
due to the close vicinity of the occlusion.

LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...Forecast confidence medium
to high.

As the mid-week storm system continues to push east Thursday, the
forcing and moisture will have moved out of our region as well.
Drier conditions are expected for WI through the end of the week.
Still expecting northerly winds to linger across the area most of
Thursday which will help keep temps a bit cooler. However,
looking upstream, long range models continue to build a large
amplitude ridge across the western CONUS on Thursday, and it is
progged to gradually slide eastward through the weekend. Will
likely start to see warmer temps in the 60s creep into our western
areas on Thursday as light winds and southerly flow begins to
develop. With the ridge continuing to shift eastward through the
end of the week and southerly flow increasing, expect fairly
quiet weather with a warming trend into the weekend. Temps across
southern WI are expected to climb into the 60s on Friday and even
warmer on Saturday, breaking into the low 70s. However, the GFS
and ECMWF have been showing a weak shortwave trough overrunning
and flattening the ridge to our north on Saturday for the past few
model runs. If this trend continues, this will likely drag a weak
cold front across WI resulting in a westerly wind shift and a
slight chance for a few showers, especially if we can get some
higher moisture up this way. Otherwise, not expecting too much if
any in the way of impacts. May see some slightly cooler, but still
mild temps behind this boundary as a more upper-level zonal flow
pattern sets up on Sunday. Then looks like a pattern change is on
the horizon for early next week as another system develops over
the Pacific Northwest.

AVIATION(21Z TAFS)...Areas of MVFR Cigs and 2-5SM Vsbys with the
rain over se WI this afternoon. Areas of stratus of 1-3 kft could
remain over ern WI into the evening followed by widespread fog
and stratus for much of srn WI late tnt. Vsbys of 1/2SM FG or
less, and Cigs less than 500 feet will be possible. The low
stratus and fog may linger for much of Wed for the counties
bordering Lake MI. Farther inland, there may be a period of VFR
conditions from late morning into the early afternoon until more
showers and tstorms lead to lower Cigs and Vsbys once again.

MARINE...Modest to breezy southerly winds this afternoon will
become light and variable tonight and Tuesday morning with dense
fog possible. A stronger low pressure system of 29.5 inches is
then expected to move east along the Wisconsin and Illinois border
Tuesday night, and the far southern basin of Lake Michigan
Wednesday morning. The low will then slowly move across Lower
Michigan and Lake Huron for Wednesday and Thursday. Modest
easterly winds on Tuesday will become brisk northerly winds,
possibly to gale force, for Wednesday and Thursday. High wave
heights are expected Wednesday into Thursday night.
