.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...

Clouds expanded into southeast WI this evening and ceilings are
MVFR around 1700 to 2500 ft. The front is stalling over south
central WI, so it is uncertain how long these MVFR ceilings will
linger overnight. I expect them to nudge eastward with time. We
should clear out the low clouds during the day Friday. Low clouds
will spread back into the area from the southeast Friday evening
as low pressure tracks through IL. The precip should begin as rain
in southeast WI including Milwaukee and Kenosha, but surface temps
may be cool enough to give us freezing rain for Waukesha,
Janesville, and perhaps Milwaukee. Snow is becoming more likely
for Madison to Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Friday evening.

I extended the Gale Warning for the south half of Lake Michigan
until 3 am and let the north half expire at midnight. The front
stalled over southeast WI so there are still some gusty southwest
winds hanging on longer than expected.

.PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 924 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020)

UPDATE...

The rain along the cold front did not materialize so I removed it
from the forecast for the evening. Low clouds are expanding
northward into Kenosha area. Winds are gusty out of the southwest
due to a strong low level jet overhead. The cold front is slowly
marching eastward, mainly marked by lighter winds with a shift to
the west. Temperatures will gradually fall below freezing
overnight.

MARINE...

Gusty south to southwest winds are ongoing out ahead of a cold
front this evening. The Gale Warning is in effect until midnight,
but it may need to be extended a few more hours for the south half
as the front progression slows down.

Then our attention turns to a low pressure system that will track
just south of Lake Michigan Saturday. This will bring a prolonged
period of strong northeast winds. Gales are expected and storm
force gusts will be possible.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 532 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020)

UPDATE...

We are not seeing any shower development upstream along the cold
front, but will continue to monitor before pulling precip chances
from the forecast.

AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...

It does not look like MVFR conditions will develop in the warm air
advection/southwest flow regime early this evening. The cold front
will make its way across southern WI from west to east during the
evening. Upstream satellite and observations show some scattered
VFR clouds near the front with a more widespread MVFR stratus
deck well behind the front back in southwest MN. Less confidence
about these making it into southern WI, but added them to the TAFs
for the late evening and overnight hours.

Mid and high clouds should return for VFR conditions as winds
become light and northerly Friday morning. Look for MVFR ceilings
to spread into southeast WI Friday afternoon and mixed precip to
begin Friday evening.

SHORT TERM...

Rest of Today through Tomorrow...Forecast Confidence is Medium...

We are starting to see some development of light showers in parts
of western Wisconsin that will track northeast clipping the CWA
bringing some scattered showers. There may be additional
development of showers as the front begins to push in. The
forcing would seem to be from WAA in the low and mid levels at the
moment but the front could play a more prominent role later this
evening as well. Although it may be too dry in the mid levels the
low levels are a bit more moist. Thus some light showers are
certainly possible through the evening as the front pulls through.
Showers may linger a bit longer in the southeast.

Southern Wisconsin should remain mostly dry through the day Friday
with the frontal boundary remaining to the southeast. This should
keep drier air in the area for much of the day. Toward the late
afternoon/ early evening we could see increased pop chances as a
strong low pushes northeast.

LONG TERM...

Friday Night Through Saturday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

A  upper level trough will be moving into the Great Lakes Region
over this weekend. The strengthening right entrance region of the
upper level jet will be over southern Wisconsin by Friday evening.
There will be a mid level warm conveyer belt that moves into
southern Wisconsin over the weekend as well. Which will keep the
mid and lower levels saturated throughout the weekend. This mid
level warm nose of air will be the driver for precipitation types
over the weekend.There is uncertainty in the timing associated
with the possibility of two separate rounds of precipitation. The
initial precipitation is associated with the strengthening trough
that begins to move into the Great Lakes Region on Friday. There
is uncertainty with the potential for a brief break in the
precipitaion Saturday morning. By late morning Saturday into
Saturday afternoon, an additional short wave trough will move
through the upper level flow toward southern Wisconsin which will
bring a more widespread precipitation event.

The first round of precipitation on Friday evening, has the most
uncertainty with how far northwest it will travel. Guidance is
trending toward keeping the heavier precipitation south of I-94.
Precipitation type is also uncertain with the mid level warm
conveyer belt moving into the the far southeast bringing high
chances for mixed precipitation. Right now a mix of sleet,
freezing rain, and snow is mostly likely, but any one those could
eventually dominate depending on just a degree or two difference
in the low level temperatures.

By Saturday late morning, the second and more intense round of
precipitation will begin to move into southern Wisconsin. The
precipitation type uncertainties are still present during this
second round of precipitation. The slight differences in sfc
temperature and the presence of the mid level warm conveyer belt
bring chances for sleet, freezing rain, and snow to the far
southeast. By the evening hours on Saturday, the precipitation
type should transition to snow for all of southern and south
central Wisconsin with the dropping surface temperatures. At this
point the period for heaviest snowfall will be Saturday afternoon
through Saturday night. Snow looks like it will end in southern
Wisconsin by daybreak on Sunday. Based on this a Winter Storm
Watch has been issued starting Friday evening in the far southern
counties for the freezing rain and sleet potential. The Winter
Storm Watch will expand to all of southern Wisconsin by Saturday
afternoon for the snow. The Winter Storm Watch will continue for
all of southern Wisconsin will continue until Sunday morning.

Sunday through Thursday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

Rather fast, active pattern expected next week as a barrage of waves
are expected to traverse the CONUS. Medium range models are in
general agreement with the pattern, though precise timing of each
individual wave becomes the challenge. Residence time of individual
waves is rather limited given the speedy flow, so not looking at any
major systems. However several bouts of light snow or rain/snow mix
are possible, with current rough timing of Sunday night/Monday AM,
Monday night/Tuesday AM, and Wednesday. While nothing major amounts
wise, timing could end up being less than ideal for affected
commutes.

Temperatures will be on a roller coaster ride through midweek, with
much colder air expected during the last half of the week.

AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

There is now quite a bit of uncertainty on if and when these MVFR
CIGS will develop. Generally it still appears likely that MVFR
CIGS will develop for at least a period beginning later this
afternoon but the exact timing is uncertain. The end timing of
these MVFR CIGS also has some uncertainty but the focus will
likely be right along the front where there may only be a brief
period of MVFR CIGS. The other concern will be some breezy winds
from the south/southwest as well as some low level wind shear
around 50 kts at around 2 kft from the south/southwest.

MARINE...

Gale warning continues across the lake with mostly southerly winds
expected for most of the evening. Winds will turn to the west
overnight and weaken as the system pushes out thus allowing winds
across the lake to fall below gales by around midnight with
nearshore winds falling below small craft conditions by 3am
tonight.

More concerns for the lake are expected to begin Friday night with
northerly gales to start but turning to the northeast and
remaining through most of the period prior to the low passing over
the southernmost portion of the lake Saturday night where winds
wind will turn back to the north. Gales are expected with slight
chances for a few storm force wind gusts as well. Thus a Gale
Watch has been issued for the southern two thirds of the lake
including the nearshore from 6z Saturday through 9z Sunday. The
northern third has the Gale watch delayed until 18z Saturday but
also carrying through 9z Sunday. Strongest winds will be on the
western side of the lake with waves rising to 12 to 14 feet Friday
night through Saturday night.

A wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow will be
possible Friday evening and night, especially along and southeast
of a line from Janesville to Milwaukee. Travel impacts are likely.

A second round of mainly snow is then expected to move into the
area Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. Potentially
significant snow accumulations will be possible with this round. Gusty
northeast winds will also lead to blowing and drifting of snow.
