Widespread cloud cover continues to impact southern Wisconsin this
evening, along with gusty northwest winds as the back edge of the
surface trough continues to drop south this evening. Widespread
light precipitation from earlier today has moved out of the
region; however, we could still see some very light snow and/or
some freezing drizzle as the above mentioned trough axis drops
south overnight. Forecast soundings diverge a bit on whether or
not there will be enough cloud ice present or deep enough
moisture to favor an area of light snow. Have mentions for very
light snow for now across east-central Wisconsin, but will
continue to monitor trends and reports over the next couple of
hours to see if a transition over to freezing drizzle will be
needed or if this light precipitation becomes more widespread. If
snow and/or freezing drizzle does develop, it should be brief
overnight, but may leave behind some slippery spots on roads
overnight into Tuesday morning, especially elevated surfaces.

afternoon. The showers may linger into the early evening in the
east before totally ending as subsidence and drier air in the
mid-levels pushes into the area. Some breaks in the clouds are
expected overnight into early Tuesday. However a surge of warmer
and moist air in the mid-levels should bring another period of
clouds to the area on Tuesday.

Strengthening south winds ahead of the next low pressure system
will pull deeper low level moisture northward Tuesday night ahead
of an approaching cold front. Added some pops for light rain to
the area for late Tuesday night. Held off on any advection fog
mention for this period due to expected dewpoints rising only in
the mid 30s ahead of the approaching surface front. 925H temps
rise to above freezing Tuesday night due to the strong warm air
advection and increasing moisture. Forecast soundings and low
level thermal profile are showing all liquid precipitation later
Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

Wednesday though Thursday:

The threat for showers continues to increase on Wednesday as
a strong cold front moves across southern WI. Short term guidance
in good agreement on this cold front passage across the area on
Wednesday, but some differences in exact timing. Reinforcing push
of cold air will settle in late in the afternoon and evening as
low pressure deepens across the Lake Superior region. The coldest
air of the season will settle into southern WI on strong and gusty
northwest winds for Wednesday night and Thursday. 925H temps drop
to around -13 to -18C range by 12Z Thursday. Daytime temperatures
on Thursday are expected to remain in the teens to around 20.

Thursday Night through Monday:

Very cold air will remain entrenched across the region through
Friday night with some modification expected over the weekend, as
the upper level steering winds back a bit from the northwest to
the west to southwest. The coldest period should be from Xmas eve
through Friday night. 925H temps will plummet to around -15C into
Friday evening before modifying. Lingering gusty winds through
Friday will result in lowest Wind Chills of 10 to 20 below during
this period. Medium range deterministic guidance in general
agreement on strengthening low pressure possibly bringing some
accumulating snow to the area late in the weekend as short wave
trof amplifies as it moves east across the central Plains into
the central MS Valley. About 50% of the GEFS and EPS ensemble
members are showing some precipitation affecting southern WI
Sunday night into Monday.

.AVIATION...

MVFR ceilings continue to impact all terminals this evening, with
breezy northwest winds. Soundings are showing moisture deepening
over the next few hours as the back edge of the surface trough
drops across the region, which may foster some light snow showers
for a few hours. Will be monitoring the very light precipitation
trends to see if any mentions of freezing drizzle will be needed
overnight.

Ceilings scatter out Tuesday morning, then high pressure moves
just south of the area bringing lighter southwest to south winds.
There could be some terminals that hang onto the MVFR ceilings
with some daytime heating tomorrow, but overall increasing
mid/upper level clouds are expected. Tuesday night expect LLWS
to increase as a strong 50-60 knot low- level jet lifts across the
region ahead of a cold front expected to push across the area on
Wednesday. Some of this momentum will mix down to the surface and
should allow for a gusty south to southwest winds.

A few gusts to 35 knots and Gale strength are possible over the
southern Lake Michigan open waters late this afternoon and evening
as low pressure tracks across Northern Lake Michigan. The gusts
are expected to remain infrequent enough to not warrant posting a
Gale Warning at this point. Winds across southern LM will turn to
the west to northwest. Winds across about the northern third of LM
will turn from the east to the northwest overnight as the low
passes across the area.

A stronger low pressure system will affect the area Tuesday night
into Thursday. An extended period of strong, gusty winds are
expected over the open waters with gusts approaching Storm Force
over the north on Wednesday. A Gale Watch has been posted for all
Open Waters from Tuesday evening through Wednesday night. A period
of Gale force gusts also looks possible over the nearshore waters
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The Lake Michigan water temperature remains in the low 40s, but
arctic cold air will spread across the lake Wednesday night and
Thursday. This surge of cold air should cool lake temperatures
into the 30s, which will eventually increase the threat for
freezing spray.
