Weak cold front will sweep across southern WI overnight.
Increasing low level northwest winds will pull deeper low level rh
and thicker clouds across the area late tonight into Friday
morning. Still expect areas of light rain and snow to develop late
Friday morning and afternoon as weak lift begins to interact with
low level thermal gradient and trof.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 225 PM CST Thu Dec 10 2020)

Tonight into Friday Morning:

High clouds will continue to gradually move into the area
tonight, with low clouds moving into the area from the north
around 12Z Friday. These low clouds will linger into Friday.

A cold front will move southeast through the area tonight, with
light winds shifting to the north/northeast by later tonight.
Northeast winds will then increase Friday morning.

Friday Afternoon through Saturday night:

The main changes for this forecast are the downward shift in snow
amounts for the Friday night into Saturday night period in the
ensemble model output from the GEFS and ECMWF. The 12Z runs of
these have trended downward somewhat. The ECMWF ensembles have
been on the higher end, so this shift on the ensemble mean
snowfall is notable.

Another change is the influence of the strong northeast flow
brining mild air into the far east and southeast parts of the
area, which would limit precipitation types to rain or a rain/snow
mix. Think that the far southeast may see mainly rain until later
on Saturday, with a rain/snow mix to the northwest of there where
the lake air will be modifying the airmass there.

At this time, thinking rain or rain/snow mix at onset Friday
afternoon in the south, becoming more of a rain/snow mix Friday
night, more snow than rain in the west. This would linger into
Saturday, with perhaps a gradual eastward shift with the
changeover to snow.

There may be a relatively narrow band of the best accumulations
from southwest to northeast across parts of the area, with a tight
gradient in amounts to the northwest and southeast of there.

There is still enough of a spread in the models, NBM and ensembles
to continue to mention the risk for accumulating snow across the
area for now. If the next run or two of the suite of model
guidance trends to a narrower range of snowfall possibilities,
then we would have more confidence in advertising snowfall amounts
and possible headlines.

All in all, continue to keep up with the forecast for Friday
night into Saturday night!

Strong northeasterly onshore winds and building waves will
develop across our nearshore waters, as a deepening low pushes
into the Southern Great Lakes Region late Friday into Saturday.
With onshore winds expected to reach gales (>34 knots) and waves
around 8 to 12 feet, combined with above normal water levels, will
likely result in lakeshore flooding Saturday.

Thus, a Lakeshore Flood Watch has been issued for late Friday
night through Saturday afternoon. Low lying roads and properties
along the lakefront including homes, businesses, and some critical
infrastructure may become inundated at times. Additionally, some
shoreline erosion may occur.

Sunday through Thursday:

Models are generally showing westerly flow at 500 mb Sunday into
Tuesday, with a broad trough shifting through the region Tuesday
night into Wednesday. There is low pressure passing well southeast
of the region Wednesday, which may need to be watched for shifts
in track in later model and ensemble runs. However, moisture is
relatively limited across the area Sunday into the middle of next
week, so kept forecast dry for now. Temperatures look to trend
more near seasonal normals for middle December.

air funneling into southern WI will carry some higher low level
humidity and produce an increasing area of low clouds that should

Cold front is now over far northern Lake Michigan. It will sag
southward fairly quickly overnight. Gusty north to northeast winds
will develop over the near shore waters of Lake Michigan after 09Z
with potential gusts to 25 knots. Hence pushed start time of Small
Craft Advisory up to 09Z for the Sheboygan and Port Washington
nearshore areas, and 12Z farther south from North Point Light to
Winthrop Harbor. Gusts are expected to remain below gale warning
criteria until later Friday night into Saturday morning, so Gale
Watch will remain in place, commencing 15Z Saturday
