Today and Tonight:
Robust upper wave and attendant anomalous PV-anomaly continues to
make steady eastward progress across the Great Lakes early this
morning. Associated jet forcing continues to peel east of the
region, and an incoming cold front is injecting a renewed drier
low-level airmass across the state. Precipitation-free conditions
are expected today, although lingering wet patches may freeze on
elevated surfaces before daybreak before the gusty winds are able
to more completely dry things out. Temperatures today will be
some 15 degrees cooler than on Thursday in the wake of this recent
front, and lingering west to northwesterly breezes will yield
wind chills to start the day in the teens and lower 20s with a
gradual reduction in speeds through the afternoon as the spine of
a 1024 mb high builds into the south.
The combination of this drier low-level airmass, slackening winds
and a mainly clear sky will allow us to radiate effectively for
the first half of the evening. Thereafter, robust warm advection
begins to crank in earnest after midnight as the aforementioned
high pushes off to the east. This should effectively halt the
temperature fall, with temperatures looking to hang steady through
daybreak Saturday.

Saturday through Thursday:
Intense isentropic upglide is forecast to develop later on
Saturday morning--with a continued gradual slowing trend noted in
overnight model guidance--in association with this renewed bout of
warm advection. While surface temperatures will be starting the
day on the cool side, the combination of increasing
southwesterlies aloft and attendant WAA should help push
temperatures, both at the surface and aloft, above freezing just
in time to curtail the threat for frozen precipitation. Can't
entirely rule out a brief period of sleet trying to mix in at
precipitation onset Saturday morning, but thermal profiles at this
time look pretty marginal. Have marched precipitation chances
upwards with this forecast issuance, although the residence time
of any higher chances looks to be limited with westward extent as
a potent jet streak is forecast to shunt most precipitation of
note eastward with time through Saturday evening. Embedded
elevated thunderstorms continue to a potential, especially by
later in the afternoon and evening on Saturday as the combination
of some mid-level drying and steepening mid-level lapse rates
helps carve out perhaps 100-200 J/kg of MUCAPE for parcels lifted
above 800 mb.
The main story with this next system, however, looks to be from
the winds as, in similar fashion to the system from earlier this
week, rapid deepening of the attendant surface low is forecast to
occur through Saturday night and into Sunday. Still some question
regarding how deep the mixed layer is on Saturday afternoon in the
wake of this morning's cold front, but with 925 mb winds forecast
to increase past 40 kts, could certainly start to mix down some
30-35 mph gusts given deep enough PBL circulations. Depending on
how strong these initial south to southeasterly winds are Saturday
and Saturday evening, we may need to keep an eye on a Lakeshore
Flood threat for locales roughly north of Milwaukee as wave
heights are forecast to increase towards 8-12 feet or so overnight
into Sunday morning.
The strongest winds with this system are forecast to develop late
Saturday night and through Sunday, as strengthening cold
advection and steepening near-surface lapse rates help us tap into
some very impressive westerly momentum. Have explicitly forecast
pockets of Wind Advisory criteria gusts (near and over 45 mph) by
late Sunday morning and afternoon. Would not be surprised to see a
few locations tag 50+ mph gusts for a brief period around midday
Sunday if current trends in guidance continue. Winds will stay a
bit breezy through Sunday night, but will begin to abate as the
core of pressure rises slides east of the region.
Global guidance is in good agreement regarding a fast-moving
disturbance swinging across the Great Lakes region Sunday evening.
At this time, the mid-level column looks too dry to support a
precipitation threat, but very cold temperatures aloft will
support a plume of very steep lapse rates which we'll need to keep
an eye on.
A period of dry and cool weather is expected early to mid-week
with highs generally in the 40s before a potential moderating
trend by late week as an upper level ridge looks to build over the
central CONUS.

A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST for the
nearshore waters as lingering 25-30 kt gusts will persist for a
few more hours before gradually abating through the rest of the
morning hours.
A round of gusty south to southeast winds is expected to develop
on Saturday ahead of a strong surface low developing across the
Northern Plains. This system will strengthen as it pushes
northeast into the western Great Lakes region Saturday night into
early Sunday and will drag a cold front across the lake.
South gales to 35 knots are expected ahead of the cold front late
Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening. A brief lull in the gusty
winds is possible late Saturday night before even stronger west
gales of 40 to 45 knots develop behind the cold front early Sunday
morning and through the rest of the day. As a result, a Gale
Watch has been hoisted for all of the open waters of Lake Michigan
Saturday afternoon through late Sunday night.
