The rest of the day is shaping up to remain pleasant with a few
cumulus developing. The cu may be briefly broken in northern
areas, to the northwest of the weak exiting low pressure syste
over southern Lake Michigan. Temperatures should rise into the mid
70s but a developing lake breeze will halt the temperature rise
close to the lake by mid-afternoon.
Still expect a period of showers and thunderstorms to sweep across
southern WI late tonight through mid-late morning Sunday as
strong synoptic features pass across the area.

.SHORT TERM...

Today through Sunday:
Out of the gate this morning, keeping an eye on scattered warm
advection showers moving across the northeastern 1/4 or so of the
forecast area. These should move east of the area by daybreak,
with just a few hundreths of an inch of rain at most.
The daytime hours today should be pleasant, with light and
somewhat variable winds across the region. Highs today will be in
the mid to upper 70s, and the lighter wind regime will likely
allow for a weak lake breeze to form along the Lake Michigan
shoreline by afternoon.
By later today, a strong warm front will be sharpening up to our
southwest. A robust low level jet will overspread that boundary
this evening into tonight, with a complex of thunderstorms forming
across south central Minnesota late this evening. These storms
will drop southeast into the area toward daybreak. Right now, it
appears that the front will be far enough to the southwest to
limit the instability across the area during the overnight and
early morning hours on Sunday. This should keep the severe weather
risk mainly southwest of the area, though a few instances of gusty
winds and small hail will be possible as the complex moves
through.
Those storms will push off to the southeast Sunday morning, with a
warm front mixing northeast through the area during the day on
Sunday. Once the front mixes through, temperatures will quickly
warm, with low 80s likely across the southwest. Very gusty south
to southwest winds are also expected for much of the day Sunday,
with 25-35 MPH gusts likely.
Strong capping aloft will limit thunderstorm potential during much
of the day Sunday, at least until the cold front arrives Sunday
evening. Still some question right now as to how widespread
thunderstorms will be Sunday evening given the strength of the
cap, but anything that can overcome that cap will have 2000-2500
J/KG of MLCAPE to work with, along with steep mid level lapse
rates and 45-50 knots of deep layer shear. If storms stay
isolated, supercell structures will be possible; while a tornado
or two would be possible, large hail seems like the more likely
threat. If convection becomes more widespread, the strong forcing
associated with the front would suggest a fairly rapid transition
to a linear mode, with winds becoming more of a concern.
Ultimately, a lot will depend on how things play out tonight and
during the day Sunday ahead of the cold front, so stay tuned!

.LONG TERM...

Sunday night through Friday:
As mentioned above, a strong cold front will move through the
area Sunday night. Temperatures will be 10-20 degrees cooler on
Monday, with gusty north to northwest winds. At this time it
appears that we should remain dry until Monday evening.
The frontal boundary will be stalled out to our southwest, and by
Monday night, isentropic ascent will overspread the boundary as a
deep trough begins to dig across the northern Rockies, with
widespread light to moderate rain developing along and north of
the front. High pressure in the northern High Plains and surface
troughing across the Ozarks and Ohio Valley will result in a
tightening pressure gradient and increasing northeast winds across
the area by early Tuesday. The rain, along with cool temperatures
and gusty winds, will likely persist through at least Friday, as
the western trough becomes a large cutoff low, which will slowly
move across the Central Plains and into the Great Lakes by
Saturday. Highs Tuesday through Thursday will be in the 50s in
many locations, with overnight lows in the mid to upper 40s. A
total of 3-5 inches of rain will be possible during this time.
Thankfully, given the long during and relatively dry conditions,
widespread flooding doesn't appear likely.
Extended guidance does push the upper low east of the area by the
early part of the weekend, though upper lows are notoriously
fickle, so uncertainty in timing is high. Once that low does push
east though, expect more typical mid September weather to return.

VFR conditions are expected through late tonight. A period of
showers and thunderstorms should affect much of southern
Wisconsin late tonight through mid to late morning Sunday. A few
of the thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and small hail.
Ceilings may drop to MVFR and possibly IFR for a time during and
after the morning convection.

Open Waters...Weak low pressure will move across southern Lake
Michigan through the early afternoon. South of the low, gusty
southwest winds to 25 knots are expected for a time. The winds
will turn to the west and then north to northwest as the low
pressure system moves across lower Michigan this afternoon. West
to northwest winds are expected across central and northern Lake
Michigan however winds will turn more variable this afternoon as
weak high pressure approaches the lake. Developing lake breezes
will also result in onshore flow closer to shore this afternoon.
Nearshore...Variable winds will become more northwest for a time
in the wake of exiting weak low pressure. However a weakening
pressure gradient and cooler nearshore waters will allow a lake
breeze to develop during the afternoon resulting in winds turning
more northeast.

A strong warm front approaching eastern Wisconsin on Sunday is
looking more likely to result in a period of gusty south winds
and building waves. These building waves and gusty south winds
will bring a period of dangerous swimming conditions and a high
swim risk to Lake Michigan beaches on Sunday into Sunday night.
Any beach goers on Sunday should be prepared to avoid the water
into Sunday night. Several periods of thunderstorms will also
affect Lake Michigan beaches on Sunday into Sunday evening as
well.
