.UPDATE...Weak returns continue to diminish over southeast WI so
expect patchy freezing drizzle to end by early afternoon A few
flurries still getting generated downwind of Portage Power Plant
but expect this to diminish as winds become more westerly and low
level rh thins. Some breaks in the overcast now showing up over
southwest into west central WI as stratus becoming more cellular.
Expect this trend to continue with at least parts of the west
seeing some peaks of sun this aftn.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...MVFR ceilings should gradually lift later
this afternoon and evening as drier air and subsidence moves
across the area. However will need to watch area of stratus caught
in the ridge to the west. This may slide back into the area late
this aftn or eve. Can not rule out a few light rain or snow
showers as a cold front moves through later Sunday morning,
followed by a period of strong west winds.

.PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 941 AM CST Sat Jan 4 2020)

UPDATE...Isolated light snow showers affecting parts of southern
Columbia into central Dane County and possibly parts of northern
Rock County, possibly as a result of particulates being ejected
from the Alliant Energy Portage Power Plant. As winds turn more to
the WNW, expect these light snow showers and flurries to shut off.
Otherwise, patchy light freezing drizzle appears on the wane as
light radar returns move from east central into southeast WI,
however may yet affect a few spots in next 1-2 hours. A couple
webcams still showing a few drops on the lenses north and
northwest of KMKE.

Stratus about 2k feet deep per KGRB 12Z sounding. A bit shallower
on KMPX sounding and latest visible imagery showing widespread
stratus upstream although there are a few thin spots in the
stratus. For now, will remain optimistic with at least partial
clearing taking place, but postponed until later in the aftn or
eve.

MARINE...Northwest winds ahead of approaching high pressure ridge
may gust to 25 kts over the southern Lake Michigan open waters.
The winds will subside a bit as the ridge nears and moves across
the region later today and tonight. The winds will turn to the
south ahead of a fast moving cold front late tonight and Sunday
morning and increase. The strongest winds are still expected in
the wake of the cold front Sunday afternoon and evening. A Gale
Watch remains in effect for this period.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 620 AM CST Sat Jan 4 2020)

UPDATE...

Snow along the WI/IL has moved out of our area this morning, but
there still is slight chance for a wintry mix through sunrise,
mainly for areas north of I-94 and east of I-90, thus have
expanded low end PoPs across most of the CWA through 15z.
Otherwise, bumped temps up a bit this morning as previous forecast
were a few degrees cooler than the current observations. Cloudy
skies are expected to gradually scatter later today as the upper-
level ridge builds into the region and subsidence becomes more
prevalent. Northwest flow will help keep temps pretty chilly with
highs in the low 30s this afternoon, but winds will gradually
shift to west then southwest overnight and warmer conditions are
expected on Sunday.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Stratus deck continues to blanket southern WI terminals this
morning. Ceilings are mostly MVFR, but can occasionally bounce to
low end VFR through late morning. As the upper-level low
continues to exit the region, clouds are expected to lift above
3kft and scatter out this afternoon, but given the upstream
coverage on nighttime microphysics satellite imagery, have delayed
the onset of this by a few hours. As subsidence associated with
the upper-level ridge takes hold this evening/tonight, VFR
conditions will prevail overnight. However, brief periods of MVFR
ceiling may be possible early tomorrow morning. Northwest wind
will remain light today and gradually shift to the southwest by
the end of this TAF cycle.

SHORT TERM...

Saturday...Forecast Confidence is High...

A few snow showers will continue to skirt east across the
southeastern WI counties early this morning with minimal
accumulations (a dusting to maybe 1/4 an inch in a few
locations). These showers are expected to gradually push out of
the area by sunrise as the mid-level low moves east-southeast into
the Ohio River Valley this morning. Additionally, a swath of
freezing drizzle looks to work southeastward across northeast WI
this morning and could affect Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties
this morning. A light glaze of ice might develop and cause some
slick spots early this morning, but freezing drizzle should be
short-lived and end around sunrise.

Otherwise, Saturday looks be fairly quiet across southern WI as the
upper-level longwave trough pushes east and a ridge begins to build
in over the region. These clouds look to hold, but thin out through
late morning and eventually scatter out this afternoon. However,
with a northwesterly wind, high temps will remain only in the low
30s. Overnight, temps are expected to drop into the mid 20s, but
are progged to gradually warm as winds shift to the southwest
early Sunday morning as a high settles in across the Plains.

LONG TERM...

Sunday through Monday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

A quick moving clipper system passes across Lake Superior on
Sunday and with bring a cold front through the region. Models are
point to the best vorticity advection occurring Sunday morning
into early afternoon and this lines up with the frontal passage.
While we have good forcing, the extent of moisture might be in
question with a fairly shallow saturated layer up to 800mb across
southern WI. As you go north though the moisture is a bit better
and will show a gradient in PoPs to reflect this. Due to the
shallow nature of the moisture, there is some question as to
whether or not temps aloft will be cold enough for ice in the
clouds. Thinks models don't have a good handle on this and have
opted to keep precip as a rain/snow mix. Surface temps warm just
enough through the day ahead of the front that enough melting
would occur for light rain. Any amounts of QPF or Snow will be
very light.

The bigger issue for Sunday is the wind gusts arriving behind the
cold front. A 45-55kt 850mb jet will move across the region and
with steep low level lapse rates, these stronger winds mix down to
the surface. Gusts up to 40 mph are possible Sunday afternoon and
a Wind Advisory might be needed. The pressure gradient relaxes
overnight into Monday as high pressure moves into southern IL. So,
the stronger winds won't last too long.

Winds turn back to the south on Monday and with partly cloudy
skies temps end up in the mid to upper 30s.

Monday night through Wednesday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

Rinse and repeat from Sunday as another clipper system moves
across Lake Superior Tuesday. There is a slightly longer period of
southerly flow ahead of this feature and moisture depth through
the column is better per the latest GFS. Might have a better
chance for snow on Tuesday compared to the Sunday system. Winds
aloft with this system won't be nearly as strong but we should
still be in for some decent gusts behind the front Tuesday
afternoon and evening.

There is a better push of cold air into the region as high
pressure moves out of the Dakotas and into the Great Lakes. Lows
bottom out in the teens to single digits in a few locations. Wind
chills Wednesday morning will be in the single digits. Highs for
Wednesday stay right around freezing due to the persistent
northerly flow.

Wednesday night through Friday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

A broad trough across the western US will allow for a shortwave to
kick E/NE Thursday morning. Southerly flow and WAA quickly ramp up
ahead of this feature and highs could warm into the low to mid 40s
for Thursday. There could be a small window in the morning for a
brief mix to occur with the colder surface temps still in place.
The current track of this system should keep things mainly rain
from Thursday into Friday. But this is still far enough out to
get into those details, just something to watch over the coming
days.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Lingering light snow showers are possible over the next hour or so
for MKE and ENW, but will move out pretty quickly before sunrise.
MVFR to near MVFR ceilings will persist through the morning with
a few brief pockets of clearing possible, especially over the
eastern terminals. Clouds will eventually scatter out by late
morning into Saturday afternoon giving way to mostly VFR
conditions.

MARINE...

The system that brought snow to portions of the Great Lakes region
this morning will eventually merge with another area of low
pressure that is pushing northeast through the Ohio River Valley.
On the backside of this system, modest north to northwest winds
are expected to develop across the lake on Saturday.

Much stronger northwest flow is then expected across the lake Sunday
into Monday, as another area of low pressure moves across
western Ontario. Gales are likely by Sunday afternoon through the
evening, especially over the southern half to two thirds of the
lake. A Gale Watch is now in effect for this period. A few storm
force gusts may be possible, especially over the central and
southern thirds of the lake late Sunday afternoon. Winds will
become more westerly and gradually weaken through the day Monday,
though it will likely remain breezy through much of the week.
