MARINE...A warm front will lift into central Lake Michigan for
Sunday afternoon and stall there through the evening. Brisk
northeast winds will develop over the north half during this time
with modest southeasterly flow over the south half.
Low pressure of 29.3 inches over eastern Colorado will deepen to
29.1 inches as it tracks across Illinois and Lower Michigan Sunday
night, then further deepen to 28.9 inches over eastern Ontario
Monday afternoon. This will bring a period of very strong winds to
Lake Michigan Sunday night through Monday evening. Some storm
force gusts will be possible during this time. A Gale Watch is in
effect for all of Lake MI. For the nearshore waters from
Sheboygan to Winthrop Harbor, a Small Craft Advisory will go into
effect from 5 PM Sunday until 1 AM Monday, followed by a Gale

The low will continue northeast into Canada on Tuesday, with high

SHORT TERM...
Rest of This Afternoon and Tonight...Forecast Confidence High...
After a mostly sunny morning, mid level clouds are quickly pushing
into the area from the southwest. Rain will move in later this
afternoon into this evening, as warm advection and moisture
transport ramp up. Precip will also be aided by increasing low
level frontogenesis, associated with a sharpening frontal
boundary that will stall out across the region later tonight.
We will likely see a break from the steadier rain late tonight and
early tomorrow morning, though occasional showers, and widespread
drizzle and fog will remain across the area. Lows tonight will
only fall into the low to mid 40s.
Sunday and Monday...Forecast Confidence Medium...
As one might imagine, there will be a significant temperature
gradient across the area tomorrow given the stalled front. Highs
near the Illinois state line will have the potential of reaching
the mid 50s, while upper 30s to around 40 can be expected toward
central Wisconsin. Will need to watch for fog potential especially
for the counties near Lake Michigan, as higher dewpoint air being
advected north over the cooler lake water will likely result in
fairly widespread fog formation. Surface winds will increase with
time on Sunday, with southeasterly flow south of I-94,
transitioning to more of a northeasterly flow further north.
More widespread rain will move in by afternoon, as lift increases
ahead of the approaching surface low and mid/upper level trough.
The surface low is expected to lift into north central Indiana and
eventually Lower Michigan Sunday night into early Monday. As the
low moves east, surface winds will become very gusty from the
northwest Sunday night, with much colder air surging into the
area. This will result in a transition from rain to snow late
Sunday night and Monday morning, with precipitation then ending
fairly quickly by mid to late morning on Monday.
Model guidance has come into better agreement today on storm
track, resulting in higher confidence on snow amounts. Areas
along/south of I-94 will likely see little in the way of
appreciable accumulation, though some flakes will likely fly for a
time on Monday. Areas north of I-94 have the potential of seeing
a dusting to a couple of inches of wet snow, with the higher
amounts northwest of Madison. Much higher totals are expected
across northern and north central Wisconsin with this storm.
Monday will be a very windy day, with west winds frequently
gusting 40-45 MPH. A few gusts to 50 MPH will be possible. A Wind
Advisory may eventually be needed for Monday, especially for the
eastern portion of the area.
LONG TERM...
Tuesday through Friday...Forecast Confidence Medium to High...
Breezy and cool conditions are expected for Tuesday, with highs in
the mid to upper 30s. Similar conditions are expected for
Wednesday, with just a slight warm up into the low 40s for
Thursday. Multiple weak shortwaves passing through deep northwest
flow aloft will have the potential to bring light sprinkles or
snow flurries at times, though nothing widespread or impactful is
expected.
The core of the upper level trough is expected to begin to move
east of the region late in the week, bringing slightly warmer
temperatures to the region, though readings will likely remain
below average.
AVIATION(18Z/21Z TAFS)...
Mid level clouds will continue to push east into the area this
afternoon, with rain moving in late this afternoon into this
evening. Initial VFR ceilings will fall to MVFR this evening and
eventually IFR and LIFR overnight, as low level moisture builds
into the area. Low ceilings and fog will persist for much of the
day on Sunday. Winds through the period will have an easterly
component, with northeasterly flow at Madison by late tonight, and
southeasterly flow expected elsewhere.
MARINE...
A sharpening frontal boundary is expected to stall across the
central portion of the lake tonight, which will result in
northerly winds across the north half of the lake, and southerly
winds across the south half tonight and much of tomorrow. Winds
will eventually become northerly across the entire lake Sunday
night, as low pressure lifts from the Ohio Valley into lower
Michigan.
