winds will result in gusty northwest winds the rest of the night
as temperatures drop into the 30s. Passing mid-high level clouds
with passing weak cold front will affect eastern areas through the
late night.

.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...SCT-BKN mid-level clouds accompanying
passing frontal boundary across east central WI. These could
spread across more of the eastern CWA overnight as front slides
south. Tightening pressure gradient will result in gusty
northwest winds the rest of the night, with gusts up to 25 kts. A
brief period of low level wind shear with gusts up to 45 kts at 2k
feet, wl diminish by 08-09Z.
Otherwise, still expect scattered rain and snow showers to
develop across southern WI later Thursday morning and afternoon,
with wind gusts up to 35 kts.

UPDATE...Tightening pressure gradient and low level cold air
advection pulling much drier air across southern WI. Do not expect
fog to become a problem overnight due to the drying. Went more
aggressive (scattered wording) with rain and snow showers later
Thursday morning and afternoon due to vigorous mid-level short
wave rotating through the area. Also, an area of 400mb potential
vorticity slides across southern WI with mid-level lapse rates
increasing to 6-7 degrees. Gusty winds up to 35 kts will
accompany the showers on Thursday.
MARINE...Posted Dense Fog Advisory for parts of southern open
waters through the evening, until winds pick up from the west to
northwest. Numerous shore webcams were showing lower visibility in
fog, but seeing a little improvement in last scans. Weak low
pressure over northern Lower Michigan pulling a weak front across
northern Lake Michigan. This is causing rapidly backing winds from
the west to the north to northeast for a time, with a period of
gusts of 20 to 25 kts. The winds will turn to the west to
northwest during the overnight and begin to increase as pressure
gradient tightens. Gale Watch remains in effect on Thursday into
Thursday night, with Small Craft Advisory for the near shore
waters.
PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 621 PM CDT Wed Apr 8 2020)
UPDATE...Rainshowers will continue to diminish through the early
evening as area of mid-level frontogenesis moves off to the east
and drier air surges in from the west. Upstream dewpoints fall
into the 20s over west central WI. This dry low level air is
helping offset the strong cold air advection that will be
affecting southern WI this evening. Normally would expect some
lower stratus to develop, but not seeing any lower clouds
upstream. Hence wl remain optimistic and continue clearing trend
this evening.
AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...Showers will continue to diminish early this
evening and expecting a clearing trend. Would not be surprised to
see some sct-bkn MVFR ceilings briefly develop next couple hours
in the east, before drier air surges in from the west. Scattered
rain and snow showers expected to develop across the area from
late morning Thursday into the afternoon, with gusts of 30 to 35
knots.

SHORT TERM...
This Afternoon and Tonight...Confidence is Medium
Scattered to more widespread showers have enveloped much of south
WI today, which has kept temperatures on the cooler side than
originally thought. While the surface low is spreading into
central IL, the 700mb and 850mb fronts are further north. This is
allowing for increased frontogenetical forcing across the region
and resulting in this continued generation of showers along and
ahead of the incoming cold front. Lapse rates aloft remain steep
enough that a few isolated thunderstorms are possible as the front
drops south through the region this evening. Once the showers are
able to clear to the south and east expect winds to ramp up with
gusts up to 20 to 25 mph possible overnight. Temperatures drop to
near freezing tonight as the CAA kicks in.
Thursday through Friday...Confidence is Medium
A shortwave dropping south during the day will line up with steep
low level lapse rates and moisture in the 850mb to 700mb layer.
This could allow for some scattered showers and with colder temps
aloft it's not out of the question to see some rain/snow mix or
even some graupel with any of the showers tomorrow. Temperatures
should be able to warm into the upper 30s to lower 40s.
The pressure gradient over the region increases as the shortwave
dips south and gusts of 30 to 35mph are possible. Models have
backed off on some of the stronger gusts and bring those more to
MN/IA which line up more with core of the stronger winds aloft.
Winds begin to drop off on Friday as pressure moves towards the OH
Valley. Temps end up a couple degrees warmer for Friday with highs
in the mid to upper 40s but those are still below normal for this
time of year.
LONG TERM...
Friday night through Tuesday night...Confidence is Low to Medium
As the high pressure over the OH Valley starts to push east winds
turn more to the south to southwest. Temperatures return to near
normal over the weekend but a system developing over the central
Plains will move towards the area Saturday night. Rain chances
increase Saturday night into Sunday morning. Models continue to
advertise some differences in how they deepen this system on
Sunday with the ECMWF slower and further south with the surface.
The GFS would take the low across norther IN and into MI and put
us under a heavier swath of precip. General preference is to favor
the ECMWF solution mainly because there is likely to be more
widespread convection developing over the TN Valley Sunday into
Monday and this will likely cause the low to deepen more over the
OH Valley then lift into the Great Lakes. Temperatures from
Saturday through Sunday will be warm enough to keep all precip
liquid and it won't be until early Monday morning for a rain/snow
mix to be possible as the precip exits the area.
A colder period is expected for the rest of next week as a broad
trough settles over the central US. A few weak shortwave rotating
through this trough could bring slight chances of precip next week
but confidence in timing is low. Temps will stay about 10 degrees
below normal all next week.
AVIATION(21Z TAFS)...
Scattered showers continue across southern WI this afternoon and
occasional drops to MVFR cigs/vis are possible as this move
across the region. A cold front moving in tonight will help to
clear these showers but expect an increase in NW winds as the
showers depart. Gusts overnight of 20 to 25kts are possible then
increase to 25 to 30kts during the day Thursday. There is a chance
for a rain/snow mix on Thursday with any showers that develop but
we are not expecting any accumulations.
MARINE...
A cold front moves across the lake this evening shifting winds to
the north. Ahead of the front there is a slight chance for a few
thunderstorms to impact the far southern portions of the lake. The
pressure gradient increases tonight into Thursday resulting in
small craft conditions in the near shore and near gales for the
open waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect tonight through
Friday morning. Decided to hold onto the Gale Watch as models
continue to suggest winds stay below criteria but there could be a
window Thursday night into Friday where gales are possible.
Lighter winds and waves are expected over the weekend as high
pressure moves into the OH Valley.
