.UPDATE...

Patchy to areas of fog continue across central WI with some
locally dense spots. Observations have bounced around tonight and
webcams do show that the fog could become more widespread. So a
dense fog advisory may need to be issued at some point tonight.
Want to see what happens as this clearing of clouds moves north
and winds tick up slightly. The rest of the forecast is on track.

.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...

A mix of VFR/MVFR cigs exist this evening as the clouds have been
clearing. Satellite imagery suggests that much of these MVFR cigs
should clear by 07-08z but fog is starting to develop where the
winds have remained calm. Can't rule out some 4-5SM fog at the
terminals overnight. Then a system approaches from the west and
winds begin to increase by 12-15z which will help to mix out any
fog. Cigs fall back to MVFR as a line of showers moves from west
to east Thursday morning into the afternoon. A few isolated
thunderstorms are possible but not confident to include these in
the TAFs.

Winds switch to the west and remain gusty with values of 20 to
30kts at times.

UPDATE...

Clouds are starting to clear across SW WI, which could lead to fog
development for a period tonight. Dewpoint depressions in areas
that remained clear to the west have dropped to near zero and
think that we'll see similar trends here. So, have added patchy
fog into the grids until shortly before sunrise. A system nearing
the area will tighten the pressure gradient such that the
increasing winds Thursday morning should help to mix out some of
the fog. If visibilities due drop quickly tonight we may need a
dense fog advisory but confidence in a need for one at this time
is low.

MARINE...

Winds increase out of the south Thursday afternoon ahead of an
approaching cold front. Do not expect gale force gusts until winds
shift to the west behind the front Thursday night into Friday. Did
tweak winds slightly upward. The rest of the forecast is on track.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 634 PM CDT Wed Mar 11 2020)

UPDATE...

The influx of low to mid 30 dewpoints into central WI, where it
snowed overnight is resulting in patchy dense fog. Winds will
continue to stay light until after midnight and this could allow
the fog to become a bit more widespread. While these conditions
appear to be patchy in nature now it's possible we may need a
Dense Fog Advisory. Going to monitor the trends on visibilities.
Otherwise the current forecast is on track.

AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...

There is some uncertainty regarding cigs tonight, clearing was
noted over far SW WI this afternoon. However, there is low
confidence that this clearing makes it into S/SE WI. Could see the
current MVFR cigs hold for much of the night and into Thursday.
Another concern is the potential for fog development with fog
noted across central WI in the KFLD and KSBM terminals. Don't
think we'll see vsbys drop much below 4-5SM at KMSN, KUES, KMKE,
and KENW. Winds become gusts out of the S/SW on Thursday ahead of
a cold front. Rain will move back in towards the end of the TAF
period.

SHORT TERM...

Tonight Through Thursday Night...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

Skies may scatter out over portions of southwest and south central
WI late this evening, but clouds should hang on over southeast WI
overnight. We may have a period of sunshine Thursday morning, but
a strong cold front will bring a period of showers and a slight
chance of thunder across southern WI during the afternoon into the
early evening.

It looks like showers will be confined to the ahead of the front,
coincident with a digging upper trough and strong surface
frontogenesis. Decent warm air advection just ahead of the front
may allow for a few spots in southeast WI to reach 60. While
surface instability is not expected, mid level lapse rates look
just steep enough to support the mention of a rumble of thunder.
Total rainfall amounts should be around 0.25 to 0.40 toward
central WI and 0.10 near the IL border.

Gusty west winds and falling temperatures can be expected Thursday
night. Lows should drop down to around 30.

LONG TERM...

Friday through Wednesday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

After the passage of the cold front on Thursday, a polar high
will move into the northern plains. Northwesterly winds and dry
air will prevail over northern plains. A upper level low will be
passing through the Ohio River Valley on Saturday that could bring
a few light showers to southern Wisconsin. Chances for light
showers on Saturday are low with the bulk of the system remaining
well to the south of Wisconsin. Surface high pressure and dry air
remain over Wisconsin through the weekend. The next chance for
precipitation looks to arrive at the beginning of the work week as
a trough moves through the northern CONUS. There is still some
uncertainty with guidance on the exact timing and phasing of this
trough.

AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

Expect lower clouds to hang around through the evening. Partial
clearing is possible in southwest and south central WI overnight,
but clouds should hang on over southeast WI. Ceilings should be
VFR Thursday morning, then lower to MVFR Thursday afternoon with
rain moving in, then drop to IFR behind a cold front Thursday
evening.

MARINE...

South winds will gradually increase tonight into Thursday over
Lake Michigan, with waves gradually building. Gusts should reach
Small Craft Advisory levels Thursday from late morning into middle
afternoon, with waves of 3 to 5 feet or so toward Sheboygan.

After a strong cold front moves through the region Thursday
afternoon and early evening, gusty west winds are expected
through Friday. Some gales of 35 to 40 knots are likely later
Thursday night into Friday morning.

A Gale Watch is in effect for the open waters of Lake Michigan
for this period. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the
nearshore areas Thursday afternoon, and then a Gale Watch is in
effect gales Friday morning through the late afternoon.

Winds and waves should gradually subside Friday night into
Saturday. Onshore winds may bring waves to around 4 feet on
Sunday.
