A sharpening long wave low pressure trof over the western Great
Lakes and embedded upstream short wave will bring a few more
showers to the area later tonight along with increasing clouds.
More showers will accompany a passing cold front on Thursday.
Despite the mostly clear skies over the past several hours,
temperatures have not been falling that quickly due to the strong
low level mixing just above the shallow surface inversion.
Temperatures will level off as the clouds return to the area
during the overnight.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 200 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2020)

Tonight through Thursday night:

500 millibar cyclonic flow regime will persist with embedded vort
maxes riding through from time to time. This will keep the
persistent pattern in place. One wave moved through and passed to
our south. Another one rides in from the northwest overnight.
Plenty of shra riding southeast through ern MN into wrn WI. While
some of this may have a diurnal component to it there is enough
dynamics and hints in the meso progs to keep some pops going
across portions of the area overnight. We will then remain in this
cyclonic flow with weaker waves swinging through right through
Thursday night. Hit and miss showers will be the rule in this
regime. Frost potential Thursday night into early Friday will be
highly predicated on clearing trends and winds decoupling. At the
moment, seems enough confidence to keep mention of frost going,
especially for inland locations.

.LONG TERM...

Friday through Saturday:

The mid level flow remains cyclonic though the vort pattern looks
more elongated/channelized. Overall, less low level troughing as
well with the surface ridge nudging into the area. Overall, Friday
still looks to be a dry day. The low level flow through an
appreciable depth of the column looks weak enough to support a
potentially more frost Friday night into early Saturday. However
we may be seeing an increase in cloud cover associated with the
next system that may put a limit on the areal extent of favorable
frost conditions for frost. Another mid level wave rounding base
of the broad trough will lead to some cyclogenesis to our
southwest on Saturday. So this will likely spread rain back into
the area as the day wears on. Still some timing differences with
this, but as of now the GEM and ECMWF are quicker in bringing the
precipitation into the area.

Saturday night through Sunday night:

The GEM and and ECMWF show more cyclogenesis to our southeast
later Saturday night into Sunday. This would but our area squarely
in the def zone region of steadier rains. The GFS is a weaker
solution with a more delayed arrival of rainfall, however the 12z
GEM has slowed things down a bit as well. Seems like high enough
confidence for some wet weather this period to have some fairly
hefty pops in place. If the low does crank up will likely be a
rather raw day Sunday.

Monday through Wednesday:

Overall, we are looking at a fairly quiet period with a broad mid
level anticyclonic flow. Should see temps warm through the period
after lingering influence of low level thermal trough eases and
warm air advection gets going. One issue is a weak system Monday
night which the GFS has backed off somewhat from the prior run.
Will keep this period dry for now due to outlier nature and a
within model weakening trend.

VFR ceilings and scattered showers will return to southern
Wisconsin later tonight into Thursday morning ahead of an
approaching cold front. A period of MVFR ceilings may affect TAF
sites Thursday morning.

.MARINE...
(Issued 910 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2020)

Nearshore...The strong gusty off shore winds rapidly decreased
with the loss of insolation late this afternoon and early evening.
Winds at the lakeshore are now mostly 10 to 15 knots and 15 to 20
kts at the Atwater Buoy off northern Milwaukee Harbor. Hence
cancelled Small Craft Advisory.

Open Waters...Gusty west to northwest winds will continue through
the night, but remain below gale force levels. A secondary cold
front is now over northern Lake Superior and will be sagging
southward into the northern Open Waters late tonight and across
the rest of the lake on Thursday. The gusty west winds will turn
to the north but again are expected to remain below gale levels.
The cold air over the relatively warm Lake Michigan waters will
create unstable conditions and an increased risk for waterspouts.
