.SYNOPSIS...
A slow-moving, potent cold front will approach the region
tonight and move across the area by Thursday evening. High
pressure builds over the area Friday and slides offshore next
weekend. Another front will impact the area early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
As of 655 PM Wed...Latest sfc analysis shows low pressure
moving into the Great Lakes region early this evening with the
attendant cold front draped through the TN Valley and into the
deep south. The front will continue to slowly move eastward
tonight as low begins to occlude over the Great Lakes. Moisture
in the form of shallow, enhanced cumulus continues to stream
north across the area and could touch off a few light showers
overnight but any rainfall amounts would be negligible.
Increasing clouds and southerly flow should lead to a mild night
with lows in the 60s. Increasing southerly winds expected late
tonight, with gusts 30-35 mph inland and 35-45 mph along the
coast. Wind Advisory is now effect for eastern Carteret and the
Outer Banks for wind gust potential to 50 mph. Expect area to
remain mostly dry overnight, with broken line of heavy showers
and storms approaching the western portions of the forecast area
early Thursday morning mainly between 6-9 AM.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
As of 315 PM Wed...Surface low will continue to strengthen over
the Great Lakes as it becomes vertically stacked, while cold
front moves through the Carolinas. This will lead to an
active, windy and wet day across ENC. There are also some
indications of weak cyclogenesis along the front to the lee of
the Appalachians, which would enhance lift over the area, and
the heavy rain threat. Still looking at storm total precip
amounts of 1.5-3", with locally higher amounts possible with
potential for training cells. As a result minor flooding in low
lying and problem spots will be possible, but given the recent
drier weather should preclude a more widespread flooding event.
Will hold off on any flood watches, thinking that flooding will
be more localized.

SPC continues to outlook ENC in a Marginal Risk for severe
storms Thu. Still looks like a high shear/low CAPE type event.
Most models show little instability, even the NAM which shows
MU CAPE values no higher than 1000 J/kg, keeping best
instability offshore. Though strong shear in place (0-6km bulk
shear 50+ kt) should be enough to support organized convection.
High res guidance in good agreement showing a squall line or
QLCS approaching the NC coastal plain early Thursday morning and
slowly pushing eastward through the day. Strong SSE winds will
advect in at least low 70s temperatures and low/mid 60s
dewpoints, with further limited heating possible ahead of the
line of convection. So the biggest question remains how much the
destabilization will occur, as there will be plenty of shear in
place. Still looks like there could be some intensification of
the squall line/QLCS with heating, which would result in a
threat of damaging wind gusts, and possibly an isolated tornado
threat. Convection should push off the coast early evening.
Trended toward a slightly faster moving solution, with EC now
trending toward other guidance.

Windy across the area, with southerly wind gusts 30-35 mph
inland and 35-45 mph along the coast, OBX could gust up to 50
kt. Wind Advisory in effect for eastern Carteret and the Outer
Banks. CF Advisory up for portions of the coast, see section
below for details.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 315 AM Wed...Cooler weather is expected Friday, with
moderating conditions expected through the weekend and into
early next week. A cold front will push through the region early
next week.

Friday through Tuesday...Behind the cold front Friday winds
turn to the west, and some scattered showers are possible across
northern NC and the Outer Banks as the cut off upper level low
pivots overhead. Cooler temps are expected with highs only in
the mid to upper 60s. Then, high pressure will build in from the
west Saturday and shift offshore Sunday. Moderating temps
expected with readings on Saturday into the low to mid 70s, and
then the upper 70s to low 80s on Sunday. Low pressure passing
to the north on Monday will drop a cold front through the area
by Monday night, with high pressure building in from the north
Tuesday.

Short Term /through Thu/...
As of 655 PM Wed...Pred VFR conditions expected through 09z
tonight, deteriorating towards sunrise Thu morning as moisture
deepens in advance of a cold front. A strong, slow moving cold
front will impact the area Thursday. Widespread sub-VFR
conditions are expected to develop Thursday morning and continue
through most of the day, with periods of IFR and LIFR likely in
heavier showers. A line of showers and storms will push through
the terminals Thu morning into early afternoon. Isolated strong
to severe storms will be possible. Ceilings will gradually lift
from west to east late Thursday afternoon and evening. S/SW
wind gusts 20-25 kt this evening, becoming S/SE and increasing
to 25-30 kt late tonight and the first part of Thursday. There
could be period of strong LLWS late Thu morning into the
afternoon with strong low level jet in place.

Long Term /Thursday night through Monday/...
As of 330 AM Wed...VFR conditions should return Thursday night
and Friday, continuing into the weekend as high pressure builds
over the area.

seas 5-8 ft south of Oregon Inlet and 4-6 ft north. Dangerous
conditions expected to develop across the waters overnight and
continue into Thursday, with strong winds and double digit seas.
Southerly winds will increase to 25-35 kt tonight, peaking
Thursday morning and early afternoon with gusts 35-45 kt. Seas
will build to 7-13 ft tonight, peaking at 10-20 ft Thu (highest
across the outer central waters). Gale Warnings are in effect
for the coastal waters and sounds, with SCA for the inland
rivers.

Long Term /Thursday night through Monday/...
As of 330 AM Wed...Then, winds will subside down to SW 15-20
Thursday night. Stronger SW winds will develop Friday afternoon
at 20-25 kts, with an extended period of westerly winds expected
through the weekend at 10-20 kts. Seas will subside slowly
Thursday night and drop to 6-9 ft on Friday. Then seas of 4-7 ft
are expected Friday and Saturday.
