.SYNOPSIS...
A large low pressure system will remain stationary over the region
through Friday, before getting kicked out this weekend with mainly
dry weather returning.
&&
.NEAR TERM /TONIGHT/...
As of 630 PM Wed...No significant changes needed to previous
forecast for update this evening. Just adjusted grids slightly
based on latest trends. Latest radar imagery shows bulk over
shower coverage focused across the southern half of the area
this evening. Stagnant pattern continues tonight with cut off
upper level low to the west and a warm front offshore down to
South Carolina. Some change is expected tonight as the warm
front eventually pushes onshore and winds turn to the SE.
Shower activity currently will become more focused over the SW
coastal plain and Onslow county later tonight, with rain
becoming heavier as precipitable water values increase. Could
see rainfall totals of 1-2 inches (locally higher across
Duplin/Onslow counties) over the western half of the area, with
less over the NE coast. Further to the NE and over the Outer
Banks, precip coverage will be more scattered with just some
light amounts expected. Temperatures will be mild, remaining
mostly in the 60s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 240 PM Wed...An increasingly likely setup for heavy
rainfall is expected tomorrow, as a surface low pressure moves
into central NC with warm and moist SE flow at the surface over
Eastern NC. Cut off upper level low will remain just to the
west, advecting in deep tropical moisture with PWAT values
approaching 2". The focus for the heaviest amounts will be over
the western counties of Duplin, Lenoir, and Onslow and points
westward. An additional 2-4 inches of rainfall is expected in
these counties, with 1-3 inches possible across the bordering
counties to the east. There is also the potential for
convectively enhanced higher totals seen in the HREF and other
CAMs showing local maxima upwards of 6 inches. Considering the
expected rainfall over the western counties and recent rains
across the southern NC coast of 4-7", have issued a Flash Flood
Watch for the SW half of the area through Friday.
There is also a conditional severe threat over the SW portion
of the area tomorrow as MUCAPE values potentially reach over
1000 J/kg in the afternoon and evening hours. Given decent wind
shear of 30-40 kts, some damaging wind gusts will be possible if
storms can organize effectively.
Heavy rainfall threat will continue tomorrow night, with the
primary focus for rain and thunderstorms slowly shifting to the
east across the area as the upper level low drifts further east.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 320 PM Wed...Eastern NC's weather will be driven by a
slow-moving anomalously strong closed low over the Tennessee
Valley. This low before rain coverages starts to diminish
somewhat Friday and especially Saturday as the upper low moves
away. Drier, warmer weather expected for Sunday into early next
week.
Friday through Friday night...Precipitation will be somewhat
less on Friday, but more instability will lead to a better
chance of embedded thunderstorms. PoPs are categorical
Thursday/Thursday night and remain in the high chance category
for Friday into Friday evening. Clouds and precipitation will
hold high temperatures in the mid 70s Thursday, but with more
breaks in the clouds and rain, highs should reach the lower 80s
for Friday.
Saturday...Saturday will be the transition day as the pesky
mid-level low finally moves offshore to the east and northeast
of North Carolina. This will lead to a lessening of coverage of
precipitation, although there will be enough residual moisture
to lead to 20-30 percent PoPs during the day Saturday. Warmer
temperatures Saturday afternoon with highs low to mid 80s.
Sunday through Tuesday...Mid-level ridging finally develops over
the region with a surface ridge building south from New England.
This will lead to below climatological normals for precipitation
and seasonal high temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s,
with lows in the 60s.

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Short Term /through Thursday/...
As of 630 PM Wed...High confidence in pred sub-VFR conditions
expected through the period. Widespread IFR conditions currently
across the terminals, though could see OAJ and EWN briefly lift
to MVFR for a few hours this evening before lowering down again
late tonight. Otherwise expect IFR ceilings and reduced vsbys
to dominate through Thu. Areas of rain will continue through the
period, moderate to heavy at times. Some scattered tstms could
develop Thu afternoon and evening. E/SE wind gusts 15-20 kt
through Thu.
Long Term /Thursday Night through Monday/...
As of 330 PM Wednesday...Widespread IFR/LIFR conditions are
likely Thursday night as axis of heavy precipitation sets up
over the CWA. Conditions will improve somewhat on Friday as
upper level low starts to lift out of the area. While showers
will be present, sub-VFR conditions will only occur
occasionally. Generally VFR conditions expected for the weekend
as mid-level ridging builds into the region.

Short Term /through Thursday/...
As of 630 PM Wed...Dangerous boating conditions will continue
across the waters with moderate to strong E/SE winds and large
seas. Latest obs show NE-SE winds 15-25 kt, gusting to 30 kt
with seas 6-10 ft south of Lookout and 8-13 ft north...with wave
periods 12-15 seconds. Poor boating conditions continue across
the waters through Thursday with winds ESE/SE 15 to 25 kts with
gusts to 30 kts. Seas will change very little through Thursday,
generally 8-12 ft.
Long Term /Thursday through Sunday/...
As of 315 AM Wednesday...Gusty E/SE winds continue on the
coastal waters Thursday into Thursday night, with gusts as high
as 30-35 knots. Seas will continue very rough, as high as 10-12
feet, driven by long-period swells, leading to beach erosion and
overwash issues, especially over the northern tier of the Outer
Banks. Winds gradually veer to S/SW by Friday with seas slowly
falling below Small Craft Advisory criteria by Saturday. Winds
again veer to north behind a weak frontal boundary on Sunday.

.HYDROLOGY...
As of 330 PM Wed...Heavy rain is expected to become more
widespread later this evening and especially overnight and
through Thursday night. Rainfall totals of 2-4" are expected
with locally high amounts possible. This will lead to areas of
minor flooding of low lying areas, and may lead to some areas
of flash flooding.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 335 PM Wed...Swell from long easterly fetch will continue
to impact the area over the next few days. This will result in
stronger and more frequent rip currents along with more powerful
surf and shorebreak which will make swimming dangerous for all
levels for much of this week.
The combination of strong easterly flow and long period swell
will result in a minor soundside flood threat across the western
Pamlico Sound region, affecting the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers,
Core Sound, and Back Sound areas. Ocean overwash and beach
erosion will impact Highway 12 from Hatteras Island to Duck, as
well. The soundside flood threat will be greatest later tonight
into early Thursday, with the beach erosion and ocean overwash
threat continuing through evening around the times of high
tide. Minor inundation 1-2 ft agl is expected.
