Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected for most
of the forecast area, away from the coast and south of the Umpqua
Divide. Low clouds have streamed into the coast and Roseburg area,
and models suggest that these clouds could linger through the
afternoon.

The next weather-maker in a series of systems arrives tonight and
should bring significant but generally beneficial precipitation
amounts to most if not all the forecast area. On today's shift
we'll be examining potential for winter travel conditions Saturday
into Monday, and the previous discussion highlights this aspect
of the forecast nicely. We'll also be looking at thunderstorm
potential and see if we need to make any adjustments there.

No changes were made this morning to the forecast.

.AVIATION...For the 03/12Z TAF Cycle...West side valley locations
will have areas of MVFR/IFR ceilings in low clouds and fog through
mid-late morning, followed by mostly VFR this afternoon. VFR will
prevail most areas this evening and overnight, but with rain
breaking out along the coast and into the Umpqua Basin toward
morning, expect MVFR ceilings and terrain obscurations to develop

.MARINE...Updated 830 AM PDT Friday 3 April 2020...Mostly light,
variable winds and low seas are expected today. Low pressure will
approach the coast tonight and move onshore near Cape Blanco
Saturday night. This will produce a period of gusty south winds and
choppy seas. Winds and seas will diminish Sunday, but the weather
will be generally unsettled with showers. Northwest swell will
increase Monday. A thermal trough will develop Tuesday, and this
will bring gusty north winds and steep seas to the area. -Spilde/CC

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 445 AM PDT Fri Apr 3 2020/

DISCUSSION...Quiet weather is in place over the forecast area
this morning. Radar is hinting at some light isolated showers
along the coast north of Cape Blanco and possibly in eastern
Douglas county. Otherwise, the radar is quiet and satellite shows
cloud cover banked along the Cascades and Siskiyous with some
valley fog in the Coastal valleys. Widespread frost advisories and
freeze warnings are in place west of the Cascades through this
morning. Exactly which areas reach freezing vs frost is highly
dependent on the current cloud cover. Guidance indicates cloud
cover should gradually decrease as we approach sunrise and this
should allow the warmer locations to reach those critical
temperatures.

Quiet weather will continue into this afternoon, and conditions
today will be similar to those experienced yesterday. High
temperatures will be a few degrees warmer today and there'll be an
increase in cloud cover in advance of the next system approaching
the area late this evening and overnight.

Two troughs will move through the area this weekend and models are
in pretty good agreement regarding these systems through at least
Monday afternoon. The first trough is expected late tonight into
Saturday. Rain will begin at the coast in earnest overnight tonight
and spread inland during the day Saturday. Snow levels at the onset
of precipitation will be around 3500 ft, rising to around 4500 ft as
the system moves inland during the day. There may be an initial
period of moderate to heavy snow for the mountains of western
Siskiyou county early Saturday morning, especially above 4500 ft.
Current thinking is that these amounts won't reach warning criteria
since it'll be brief, but advisory amounts aren't out of the
question. For the roadways above 3500 ft, including Siskiyou Summit,
there may also be a brief period of snow early Saturday morning, but
with only 1 to 2 inches in the forecast during this time frame, any
winter impacts should be minimal and are expected to diminish after
sunrise with the warmer daytime temperatures.

For the most part, this first system will be more beneficial than
impactful. It will bring some much needed precipitation to the area,
including east of the Cascades. Up to an inch is expected along the
coast, especially in the higher terrain of Curry county, with
between a quarter to half an inch in the Cascades, and generally
around a quarter of an inch for all other locations. In fact, there
won't really be much of a break in precipitation for the coast as
the next system moves into the area late Saturday afternoon and
evening.

The second trough will drop south towards the area Saturday
afternoon, quickly pushing the first trough through the area. As
this happens, breezy to gusty winds are expected for the typical
areas (Shasta Valley, East side). 700 mb winds of 30 to 40 knots
could bring some advisory level winds for areas east of the Cascades
Saturday afternoon. As this secondary trough approaches the area,
southerly flow will funnel into the Shasta Valley, bringing gusty
winds there as well Saturday afternoon. Winds should diminish some
after sunset, but could remain breezy east of the Cascades overnight
Saturday as moderate 700 mb flow persists into Sunday afternoon.

Overnight Saturday, the attention turns to possible winter weather
impacts. Southerly flow will focus the heaviest precipitation in
northern California and this raises the concern for snow impacts
along the I-5 corridor south of Weed, and for Snowmans Summit on Hwy
89. Snow levels will hover around 3500-4000 feet Saturday night into
Sunday morning, and this will be the best window for winter weather
impacts. Current thinking is that snow levels will remain above
Mount Shasta City, but that Black Butte could see a few inches
during the early morning hours. Given the recent warm temperatures,
it's difficult to judge just how much would accumulate on the roads,
but if winter weather impacts were to occur, late Saturday night
into Sunday morning would be the favorable time for this to happen.

Let's not forget the Cascades. Each system is expected to deliver
around 4 to 6 inches, but these amounts don't reach any critical
thresholds because of the duration over which that amount will fall.
Regardless, if you plan to travel through the Cascade passes this
weekend, you should be prepared for periods of wintry weather.

Road snow concerns should diminish during the daytime hours Sunday
as snow levels rebound to 4500 ft and precipitation becomes more
spotty in nature. Widepsread showers are expected during the day
Sunday and there will be a slight chance of thunderstorms along
and east of the Cascades Sunday afternoon. Shower activity should
diminish Sunday evening with the loss of daytime heating and upper
dynamics shifting south with the low.

Another round of showers is expected Monday but coverage should be
considerably less. The upper low will continue moving south into
southern California Monday night into Tuesday and this will continue
the diminishing shower trend. Most of the area should be dry by
Tuesday, however, there could be some wrap around showers that
linger over northern California Tuesday afternoon. /BR-y
