.UPDATE...

The forecast remains on track today with scattered thunderstorms
in northern Lake and Klamath Counties. The one notable new feature
is a new large fire in south western Siskiyou County. This fire
will likely add to the smoke impacts and hazy skies across the
region. The valleys in western Siskiyou County will likely see
some dense smoke in the coming days. With the HRRR Smoke model
down, we will spend a fair amount of time on the smoke forecast
today.

.DISCUSSION.../Issued 615 AM PDT Tue Jul 28 2020/
Current conditions across southern Oregon and
northern California are showing some clouds along the coast
associated with the marine push. Additionally, lingering cloud
cover from evening thunderstorms are moving northward and
dissipating. Thunderstorms were plentiful across most areas along
and south of the Siskiyous and along the Cascades and east.
Overall, we've had 536 lightning strikes in the past 24 hours, and
only one or two of them fell outside of these areas (Illinois
Valley and just north of Mt. Ashland).

Today will be similar to yesterday, with hot temperatures nearly
everywhere (except for the immediate coast). With the lows this
morning expected to be warm, have considered issuing a heat
advisory for the Rogue Valley. It is borderline, but have
ultimately would like to wait for our morning low to come in. Some
increased cloud cover may keep temperatures a degree or two
cooler than what is in the forecast. Still, people should
anticipate hot conditions and take precautions against
overexerting themselves or subjecting themselves to heat
exhaustion or heat stroke.

The aforementioned cloud cover will be associated with
thunderstorms yet again. Most of our thunderstorm coverage will be
east of the Cascades in Oregon, but a few small areas over
terrain in Siskiyou County could see a pop up thunderstorm as
well. Overall, expect today to have less thunderstorms and less
lightning strikes. The storms were slow enough moving that they
dumped significant rains in the area, setting new daily rainfall
records at Montague and Mt. Shasta City. Still, the thunderstorm
potential is still high enough to warrant a red flag warning.

Tomorrow and Thursday will continue in its similarities in
respect to temperatures, but thunderstorm coverage will be a lot
less. We are carrying a slight chance for a stray thunderstorm
north of Crater Lake in the Cascades on Wednesday, with conditions
largely stabilizing by Thursday.

Then, on Friday, a dry cold front pushes through and our thermal
trough dissipates, and temperatures return to normal for most of
the area. This will continue through the weekend with continued
stable conditions and limited precipitation chances.

.AVIATION...For the 28/12Z TAF Cycle...Along much of the
Southern Oregon coast and in the coastal valleys, LIFR and IFR cigs
and areas of IFR/MVFR vis will continue through much of the morning.
Conditions will improve to VFR in the early afternoon with some
local IFR possible into mid afternoon at the immediate coast. Low
clouds and fog are expected to return in the early evening to the
coastal areas.

Elsewhere inland, VFR conditions will continue through the TAf
period.

Isolated thunderstorms will still be a concern between 21z (2 pm
pdt) and 3z (8pm pdt) in portions of Northern California and east of
the Cascades. Keep in mind any of these storms could bring brief
heavy downpours and small hail. Also gusty erratic winds are
possible near any storms.

Visibility will be reduced at times for areas east of the Cascades (
especially in eastern Siskiyou and Modoc Counties as well as
southern Klamath and southern Lake counties) due to smoke from the
Caldwell fire 35mi SSE KLMT. Smoke may be thick at times with
possible reduction of 1-3SM in smoke and local terrain obscuration.

.MARINE...Updated 830 AM PDT Tuesday 28 July 2020...North winds will
increase this morning into this afternoon for areas with small craft
advisory winds and steep seas developing south of Cape Blanco. Winds
and seas will decrease on Wednesday with conditions expected to
lower below small craft advisory levels by Wednesday afternoon.
Relatively light winds and seas are expected for the rest of the
week with winds shifting to the south Thursday and Friday as a weak
cold front moves across the waters. North winds may increase again
early next week.

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 200 AM PDT Tuesday 28 July 2020...
Lingering instability and moisture will lead to isolated to
scattered thunderstorms again Tuesday afternoon and evening, but
it won't be as active as yesterday and it will be mostly from the
Cascades east over northern Lake and Klamath counties. A Red Flag
warning is in effect for portions of northern Lake and northern
Klamath counties later this afternoon.

Isolated thunderstorms may develop along the Cascade crest Wednesday
afternoon and evening. The rest of the week looks dry. It will be
hot, with similar temperatures as yesterday. It will be breezy in
the afternoons and evenings Wednesday through Friday, but Friday
may see stronger winds due to an incoming weak cold front.
