.DISCUSSION...Many west side valleys experienced freezing
temperatures last night, with the few upper level clouds in the
region exiting quickly. There were isolated pockets within the
freeze warning for Jackson County that did not quite reach
freezing, so anticipate one more round of freeze related products
for west side valleys. The Umpqua basin was under a frost
advisory and most locations did not drop to freezing except for
isolated pockets around Tiller. The next round of freezing
temperatures for the west side will be on Saturday and Sunday,
and widespread freezing temperatures are more likely in the
Umpqua at that time.

Today should be a fairly pleasant day, with temperatures at or a
few degrees below climo for the entire area. Upper level clouds
will filter into the region throughout the day from the north as
a low and warm front move through the area later today.

rain chances and the extended forecast can be found in the

.AVIATION...For the 23/12Z TAFS...VFR conditions will prevail into
Friday afternoon.  An approaching front will bring areas of MVFR

conditions will persist into Saturday morning.

thermal trough near the coast will weaken Friday. Strong north

into Monday morning. Gales are possible over the southern outer

DISCUSSION...

We'll have a 20 percent chance for rain during the morning hours
around the Umpqua Valley and those probabilities will increase up
to 60 to 70 percent in the later afternoon and early evening
hours for most of the forecast area. Northern California and most
of Lake County will stay dry today as this front moves through.
Precipitation will be light for most locations on Friday. Most of
the rain will fall in the Cascades on Friday evening with rain
totals up to 0.5 inches.

Eventually, an upper level low will swing down from eastern
Washington into Nevada late Saturday through Sunday. This will be
impactful as we'll see strong winds around 20 to 30 mph over the
higher terrain Sunday with relative humidity in the lower teens
over the mountains. The lower relative humidity will help clear
out the skies and push temperatures down towards the freezing mark
for valleys west of the Cascades Saturday night and Sunday night.
Sunday night is when we have the highest confidence we'll drop
below freezing in many of the valleys west of the Cascades. The
forecast is currently calling for lows around 25 in the Rogue,
Shasta and Illinois valleys. The Umpqua valley will probably see
lows around 29.

As the low departs the region Sunday night, we'll have high
pressure build in it's wake. Temperatures will trend warmer and
possibly into the 70s along the southern Oregon coastline near
Brookings. This will remain a persistent feature as the thermal
trough remains along the coast for the remainder of the week.
Temperatures will also push 5 to 10 degrees above normal from
Tuesday through Thursday next week.

A warm front arrives Friday with a cold front following Saturday,
and once again, breezy winds are expected over the higher terrain
and the East Side. Precipitation chances will be a bit more
robust and should spread over most of the forecast area, with
wetting rains possible (though not likely) along the coast, the
Umpqua Basin, and the western slopes of the Cascades. Only light

The coldest air mass of the season so far is expected to dig south
into the region behind the cold front. Combined with the
rebounding thermal trough along the coast, a sharp east/west
gradient is expected to develop, likely resulting in another east
wind event for the region, although it appears more and more
likely that this will be a strong, multi-day event. Breezy to
gusty east winds, dry conditions, and widespread moderate to poor
recoveries are expected Sunday through at least the middle of next
week. That being said, some of our guidance has continued to
trend this event stronger, and ensembles are showing this to be
possibly one of our more extreme events for this time of year,
with some model guidance suggesting gusts up to 50 mph over the
ridges of Curry, eastern Josephine, and western Siskiyou Counties
Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the Cascades could see wind gusts to 45
mph and some of our valleys (southern Rogue, Shasta) could see
wind gusts to 30 mph. Have issued a Fire Weather Watch for this
event with a little earlier timing than our neighbors since our
winds will begin to increase in the north a little earlier and
travel southward. The concerns with this event will hinge on any
rainfall amounts and coverage with the preceding front, as well as
if winds mix into the valleys versus being only for the upper
slopes and ridges. Areas not receptive to fire spread (the coast)
will continue to see a headline in the FWF in addition to the Fire
Weather Watch.

Although the winds will decrease Monday, they will remain from the
east, so relief will not come from a marine push. Thus, recoveries
will remain in the poor to moderate range. A weak disturbance could
pass overhead Tuesday, briefly disrupting the pattern.
