.DISCUSSION...Previous forecast is on track and no changes are
needed for this morning. Smoke remain thick, but a south flow is
setting up over the area, so some areas near and at the coast are
starting to see some improvement with the emphasis on some.
Temperatures could end up a couple of degrees higher if the smoke
thins out enough late this morning and afternoon, but confidence
on this is low. Even of there is any improvement, it will be
temporary with it becoming thicker again this evening and tonight
as an inversion sets up essentially trapping the smoke near the
surface.

It will be dry through tonight. An upper low situated over the
eastern Pacific will slowly inch towards the coast, but it may not
be until late in the week when we have the best chance for
precipitation for most ofthe forecast area. -Petrucelli

.AVIATION...For the 13/12Z TAFs...Wildfire smoke will continue to be
a major impact, especially into Sunday morning. At the coast, expect
a mix of fog/marine stratus and smoke as well. IFR/LIFR cigs/vis
continues into Sunday morning. Partial improvement to a mix of
IFR/MVFR is expected again later Sunday morning into the afternoon.

Inland, LIFR to IFR visibilities and IFR to MVFR smoke ceilings are
expected through the period. No improvement or slight worsening in
smoky conditions is expected into Sunday morning. The worst CIG/VIS
conditions should be expected in the early morning. Increasing low
level winds later Sunday afternoon will bring at least slight
improvement in visibility per the hrrr smoke model. -Miles

light north and variable winds with low seas will persist through
Sunday. Marine stratus, fog, and wildfire smoke, dense at times,
will continue to affect visibilities, especially close to the
coast through the weekend.

Monday morning, south winds increase as a front approaches the area
and steep, choppy seas are likely late Monday afternoon and night,
mainly for the outer waters beyond 8 nm from shore. Steep seas will
result from a building WSW swell (peaking at 5 ft, 8 sec.) combining
with southerly wind waves. Winds and seas are expected to lower

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 443 AM PDT Sun Sep 13 2020/

DISCUSSION...Smoke continues over the entire forecast area and
is dense in the westside valleys and some east side valley
locations and Klamath Basin east of the Cascades. West of the
Cascades it's dense enough where visibility has been reduced to
around 3/4 mile at the Medford Airport and the smoke models
continue suggest the near surface smoke will improve slightly
today with general visibilities around 2 miles. A dense smoke
advisory remains in effect until 8 am. Please see NPWMFR for more
details. There is smoke east of the Cascades, but it's not as
dense. The smoke layer will still be thick enough where it will
still slow down the amount of warming quite a bit for most
locations west of the Cascades. Highs today are a little higher
than yesterday with the more southwesterly flow at ridge levels
and a little above pushing the smoke a little more to the east,
but confidence is not high enough to remove definite smoke
wording.

As an upper trough moves closer to the coast winds will increase
this afternoon ahead of a dry front, with gusty southwest winds
east of the Cascades. Although winds will not be approaching wind
advisory levels, humidities will continue to be low and a red flag
warning continues to be in place starting late morning. yesterday
saw very weak up valley flow west of the Cascades with poor
heating in a strong inversion under the smoke layer, but with the
dry cold front the afternoon up valley flow should be stronger,
with the same very dry air mass bringing red flag condition in
Jackson county this afternoon. Residents in these areas should
continue to take precautions by keeping defensible space around
their homes free of flammable materials, gutters clear etc. If
you don't have a "go bag" ready, now is a great time to prepare.
Go to ready.gov for wildfire tips and a list to build a kit, or
"go bag".

Models continue to keep the upper low well off shore with the
omega block firmly in place over the great basin. The blocking
patter weakens into Monday and the upper low nudges slightly
closer to the coast, with gusty winds and low humidity continuing
east of the Cascades Monday afternoon. a weak front brings light
precipitation to the coast, but with the ridge to the east this
front washes out and remains only at the coast.

The closed upper low wobbles a bit closer to the coast into
Thursday, with southerly flow bringing more moisture. Models are
indicating instability in western Siskiyou county and up along the
Cascades, but with the extensive smoke coverage confidence is not
high enough to go above slight chance as smoke feeding up from
fires in California, as well as the Slater fire straddling the
state line, may keep a strong inversion as well as overwhelming
condensation nuclei.

As we head into the end of the week models continue to indicate
the upper trough finally moving onshore, bringing precipitation
across the east side, and winds becoming more westerly and
possibly pushing the heavier smoke to the east. Sven

FIRE WEATHER...Updated 200 PM PDT Saturday 12 September 2020...

Overall, humidity recoveries will gradually improve from west to
east and recoveries will be noticeably better during the coming
days. Daytime humidities, however, will remain low through the
weekend with teens expected across inland west side valleys and
single digits for valleys east of the Cascades. Warm weather will
persist through the weekend but smoke will keep high temperatures
lower than typical under this pattern.

The weather pattern begins to change Sunday, as the upper ridge
shifts east due to an upper trough approaching the area. Southwest
winds ahead of this trough will increase, and gusts of 30 to 40 mph
are possible Sunday afternoon for the areas along and east of the
Cascades. Confidence is good that critical wind and humidity
conditions will be reached, and a Red Flag Warning is in effect. The
Storm Prediction Center has also placed these areas in a "critical"
fire weather outlook for low humidities and strong winds. Also,
conditions will approach critical conditions in the Rogue Valley and
the surrounding mountains as northwest winds increase there in the
afternoon. Current smoke cover will significantly limit daytime
heating, and this could prevent mixing and result in weaker winds
than forecast. However, given current ongoing fire activity and
recovery efforts in the area, fire weather concerns are heightened,
and as a result, a Red Flag has been issued for Sunday afternoon
covering much of Jackson County.

The upper level trough is expected to stall out just offshore, and
this will place the region under southwest flow aloft through Monday
and perhaps longer. The flow should help to thin the smoke, and
daytime heating should increase over that of Sunday. With increased
mixing, winds should once again strengthen during the afternoon and
evening hours east of the Cascades. A Fire Weather Watch has been
issued for Monday afternoon covering most areas east of the Cascades
and portions of the southern Cascades.

Monday night into Tuesday could end up being the first day in quite
some time where we could see some measurable rainfall at the coast
or in some inland westside locations. However, wetting rains are not
likely east of the coastal mountain ranges. Operational models and
ensemble members continue to have difficulty bringing the trough and
front onshore, and while rain is expected along the coast, inland
areas may only see a few light showers through Wednesday or
Thursday. Typically, the first wet system of the season weakens
considerably as it moves into the very dry air under the ridge, and
this system is a good example of this. The upper level trough may
finally swing onshore and across the area late in the week, and this
will be the best chance for inland showers, but even then moisture
will be limited.  At the least, we'll see a trend towards cooler
temperatures and slightly higher humidities, especially daytime
humidities, but the one thing we'll have to keep a watch on is
continued gusty winds along and east of the Cascades much of next
