.DISCUSSION...A frontal boundary's moving through the forecast area
this evening, weakening as it moves south into Southern Oregon,
and it's bringing light to moderate rain with it. Over the past 24
hours about an inch of rain has fallen in the Umpqua Basin with
only a few hundredths of an inch being recorded southward in
Jackson County. Winds have been gusty today east of the Cascades
but will diminish through the evening. Rain will taper off later
tonight, and Wednesday will be a transition day, featuring drier
conditions with high temperatures similar to today. Coastal
temperatures will warm significantly tomorrow, especially at the
Curry County coast as northeast winds begin to affect that area.

.AVIATION...For the 14/06Z TAFS...Areas of IFR/LIFR ceilings with
IFR/MVFR visibility due to stratus/fog are expected from the coast
to the Umpqua Valley overnight into early Wednesday morning. Some
higher terrain will also be obscured. Guidance is showing some MVFR
ceilings forming around the Rogue Valley as well, so have included
that in the TAF. All areas should clear to VFR late Wednesday
morning and remain that way through Wednesday evening. -Spilde

.MARINE...Updated 800 PM PDT Tuesday, 13 Oct 2020...Steep seas
dominated by swell will persist late this evening into Wednesday. A
thermal trough will strengthen Wednesday afternoon with seas
remaining steep, except becoming high and very steep south of Port
Orford as the sea state becomes wind wave dominated. The thermal
trough will strengthen further Thursday into Friday with north
winds rising to gales for areas south of Port Orford. Winds may
lower slightly on Friday and into the weekend. However, expect gusty
winds and elevated seas to persist across the waters into the
weekend as the thermal trough persists along the coast. -CC/Spilde

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 330 PM PDT Tue, 13 Oct 2020...
A cold front will continue to move southeastward across the forecast
area this afternoon and evening bringing rain to areas generally
west of the Oregon Cascades. The mountains of the Coast Range and
the Umpqua Basin, as well as the Cascades will see the most
rainfall, with amounts of a half inch to as high as an inch and a
half expected. Winds will become north and then northeast late
tonight through Thursday. Winds will then become easterly Thursday
night through Saturday, becoming moderate to locally strong and
gusty with gusts 30 to 50 mph over southwest portions of the area.
RH recoveries will decline with critical conditions possible
Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon over portions of
northwest California. Valley areas that are prone to east winds
could see a period of east winds gusting 15 to 25 mph Friday
morning. With fire danger Moderate or lower in most areas, we'll
continue to headline this event outside of FWZ 280, where we have a
Fire Weather Watch for it. RHs are expected to modify over the
weekend as winds diminish. ~BTL

DISCUSSION...
A cold front is currently moving through southern Oregon. Showers
are also moving towards the south east along the front. The
showers will put down up to 0.5 inches of rain over the Cascades,
but the valleys will see more of a drizzle struggling to wet the
ground. The probability of precipitation decreases significantly
in northern California as the front appears to run out of
moisture as it heads south. Winds will also be breezy as this
front moves through the region. We've already seen wind gusts up
to 50 mph near Summer Lake. Those winds will likely continue into
the evening hours, then decrease after midnight once the front
passes through. The 700mb winds do remain brisk up to 50 knots
until 6Z on the other hand. The impacts here are to larger high
profile vehicles driving on highway 31 this evening.
After the front moves through, we'll see high pressure build on
Wednesday with clearing skies. Temperatures will trend slightly
cooler, but not by much since we'll start seeing more sun. The
offshore winds will start to pick up and Brookings we'll see highs
similar to the inner valleys. With drier air and clearer skies
setting in, temperatures will drop rapidly Wednesday night. We
undercut guidance by a few degrees in many of the valleys west of
the Cascades because of this. However, we decided not to put frost
in the forecast as low temperatures were just a few degrees too
warm for frost.
This overall trend continues into Thursday with temperatures
warmer than normal during the daytime. The offshore flow along the
coastal range peaks around Thursday afternoon and evening. This
is when the 850 mb is around 35 knots over the Kalmiopsis
wilderness . Unsurprisingly, temperatures in Brookings will
challenge the 80 degree mark and might be the warmest locations in
Oregon on Thursday. These gusty winds are also a fire weather
concern, which is discussed in the fire weather discussion below.
Friday appears to be the warmest day as temperatures rise into
the 80's across most of southern Oregon and northern California.
East of the Cascades, highs will be in the mid 70's. The breezy
offshore flow continues along the coastal range and temperatures
near Brookings will probably hit the mid 80's. These temperatures
are roughly 10 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.
Eventually, another cold front will move in from the north. We are
keeping conditions dry Saturday and Sunday as this front moves
through. It is worth noting the ECMWF, GFS and NBM are predicting
light precipitation along the Cascades. We'll see this cool
northwest flow continue into next week. We may be dry, yet
temperatures will closer to the fall normals for this time of year
next week.
