.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure remains in control today. After a brief respite
from cool temperatures Sunday, a strong cold front will move
through our region by Sunday evening, with windy conditions,
gusty showers, and a return of colder than normal temperatures.
High pressure returns to our region for the majority of next
week, with a warming trend as the week progresses.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A deck of stratocumulus clouds has developed this afternoon as
moisture was mixed upward beneath a subsidence inversion evident on
the 12z IAD sounding. The expectation is that these clouds should
hold strong at least into the evening, but may break up later as
mixing wanes. Additional high clouds will start to stream in later
tonight in advance of a trough approaching from the west. Conditions
are expected to stay mainly dry overnight, but a shower can't be
ruled out across far southwestern portions of the forecast area
toward daybreak. Lows overnight tonight will range from the mid 30s
in the mountains, to the mid 40s in the metro areas.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A potent trough will approach the area from the west tomorrow.
Precipitation is expected to break out tomorrow morning across
southwestern portions of the forecast area around daybreak as low-
level warm advection ensues beneath a region of mid-level height
falls/strong DCVA ahead of the approaching trough. This area of rain
will spread northeastward through the morning hours, and is expected
to stay primarily to the east of the Blue Ridge. This area of rain
will progress off to our northeast during the early afternoon hours
along with the most intense large scale forcing for ascent attendant
to the shortwave. There will be a bit of a lull through the early-
mid afternoon hours before the system's cold front pushes trough the
area from west to east.
A low-topped convective line (no lightning expected) may accompany
the frontal passage, resulting in a brief downpour and gusty winds
as the front passes through. Current thinking is that any gusts
associated with the convective line will remain below severe
thresholds, since there's only around 40-45 knots of wind within the
boundary layer at the time, and conditions will be moist in advance
of the front (limiting further acceleration of winds due to
evaporational cooling). However, we'll continue to keep an eye on
the potential for stronger gusts with the convective line.
Strong northwesterly winds will move in behind the front and
continue through Sunday Night and into Monday. Confidence was
currently too low to issue a Wind Advisory, but we'll continue to
assess the need for one. Either way, winds will be the main concern
on Monday. Frequent gusts in excess of 30 knots appear likely, and
some gusts may approach 40 knots. Temperatures will also turn
sharply colder behind the front, with a hard freeze likely for many
locations Sunday Night. Upslope snow is expected along the
Allegheny Front Sunday evening through early Monday morning. Any
snow showers along the Allegheny Front should wind down Monday
morning as subsidence behind the departing mid- level shortwave
intensifies.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Northwest winds aloft will continue Tuesday while surface high
pressure builds across the Gulf Coast states. A chilly breeze will
persist, but not nearly as strong as Monday. Temperatures will
remain below normal in the 50s for most. The high will move across
the region Tuesday night with most areas experiencing lows in the
30s again.
The high will move offshore Wednesday and heights will rise through
the end of the week. After near normal temperatures on Wednesday,
above normal temperatures will return for Thursday through Saturday.
Dry conditions will prevail in the absence of any strong weather
systems. Some models indicate a few showers near or just offshore
with a weak trough late in the week, but probabilities in our
forecast area remain low.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
VFR conditions and light winds are expected through tonight.
Ceilings will lower and rain will move in tomorrow morning.
Ceilings could potentially be IFR or even LIFR for a time tomorrow
morning. A cold front will move through late tomorrow afternoon. A
brief line of gusty showers may accompany the front. This line could
produce gusts up to 40 knots as it passes through. Thereafter, gusts
to near 30 knots out of the northwest will be possible. Conditions
will return to VFR Sunday Night, and winds will continue to be the
main concern on Monday. Gusts out of the northwest in excess of 30,
and potentially even approaching 40 knots may be possible during the
day Monday.
High pressure will bring VFR conditions Tuesday-Thursday. Northwest
winds gusting in excess of 20 kt will be possible Tuesday, but will
then turn light and southerly on Wednesday.

.MARINE...
Winds are currently sub-SCA out of the east, and will turn southerly
tonight. Southerly winds will be on the increase during the day
tomorrow, and a SCA has been issued for most waters to account for
that. A cold front will push over the waters later in the day. A
thin convective line may accompany the frontal passage, and SMWs may
potentially be needed as this line presses through. Thereafter,
strong northwesterly winds will surge in behind the front. Gale
Warnings are in effect tomorrow evening through the day Monday.
SCA conditions will likely continue into Tuesday under northwest
flow. As high pressure crosses Tuesday night and moves offshore
Wednesday, winds will decrease and become southerly.
