.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the central U.S. will migrate into the
southeastern U.S. Low pressure tracking along a cold front will
move through the area Friday evening. Canadian high pressure
will build over the region on Saturday, before moving offshore
Sunday. Another area of low pressure will drag a cold front
through the area early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Really not much to add to the previous afd. We'll be adding more
counties to the Freeze Watch to include more northern MD
counties and counties along the Rt 15 corridor.

Previous afd...

The high over the central U.S. will migrate eastward into the
southeastern U.S. today, as the flow aloft turns more zonal.
After a chilly start, mostly sunny skies and warmer
temperatures is on tap for the region. We will have a WNW
breeze gusting 20-25 mph at times around midday and this
afternoon, but with the strong May sun angle, it will feel
warmer than the past couple of days. High temperatures will rise
into the 60s area wide, still 5 to 10 degrees below normal.

The high to our south will start to move offshore tonight as
light westerly turn more out of the southwest and skies remain
mostly clear. We will start to see some shortwave energy ahead
of the next system approach to our northwest toward daybreak
Friday, so can't rule out a light shower or two near the
Allegheny Front. Otherwise, dry conditions will prevail with
temperatures holding in the 40s to near 50 degrees in the
cities.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure and its associated cold front will approach from
the Ohio Valley on Friday as a potent upper trough digs
southward out of the Great Lakes. This will result in increasing
shower chances late Friday morning across the mountains,
spreading eastward into the metros Friday afternoon and evening.
Generally a quarter to a half inch of rain is expected, with
the higher amounts relegated across the northern half of the CWA
and over the Allegheny Mountains. As colder air rushes in
behind the front Friday evening, there will be a transition from
rain to snow showers along the Allegheny Front with minor snow
accumulations likely. Further east, not expecting accumulating
snow, however some wet flakes mixing in remains a possibility
along and west of the Blue Ridge. Per usual, it will be a race
between the surging cold air and remaining moisture as to how
far east this transition can make it.

Much colder air will arrive overnight Friday on the heels of
gusty northwest winds as the bulk of the precip moves east of
the Bay by midnight. With northwest winds remaining elevated
under strong cold advection, this will prevent temperatures from
dropping off significantly, however many areas west of the Blue
Ridge will have a shot of falling to or just below freezing. As
a result, we have issued a Freeze Watch for overnight Friday
into early Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall
into the upper 20s to lower 30s, with middle to upper 30s east
of the Watch.

A blustery and seasonably cold day is in store on Saturday as
we reside between the exiting low off the New England coast and
building high pressure to our southwest. With CAA continuing and
the upper trough sitting atop the region, we will have some
cloud cover to contend with, as temperatures hold in the 40s to
middle 50s, which is around 20 to 25 degrees below normal.

As the high settles to our south Saturday night, winds will
slacken but a light westerly breeze will still prevail. With
mostly clear skies expected Saturday night, the threat for
frost/freeze conditions will exist once again, mainly along and
west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Temperatures Saturday night
will settle down into the lower to middle 30s over these areas,
with upper 30s to near 40 degrees most likely in the metros and
eastward to the Bay.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will be to the south on Sunday morning. Winds
will start to shift southwesterly as the high heads out to sea
and a storm system approaches from the west. Timing on the
system is still a bit uncertain, but a period of showers looks
fairly likely some time between Sunday evening and Monday
evening. Winds likely increase once again behind this system,
and while not as cold as the system on Friday night/Saturday,
there could be some upslope snow showers once again over the
Allegheny Front. Canadian high pressure will then build across
the region for the middle of next week, with continued chilly
temperatures. Highs through the extended will remain in the 60s,
with some days struggling to reach 60, while lows will be in
the 40s during active weather periods early in the week and 30s
on the calmer nights. Frost and freeze risks will continue.

times this afternoon. VFR conditions persist tonight and into
Friday morning as high pressure to our south shifts offshore,
turning light westerly winds out of the WSW. Low pressure and
its associated cold front will move through the terminals Friday
afternoon and evening with widespread rain showers and likely
sub VFR conditions. Behind the front Friday night, winds turn
gusty out of the northwest, gusting to around 30 knots at times
on Saturday as VFR conditions prevail through Saturday night.

VFR conditions expected Sunday as high pressure slides east to
the south. Sub-VFR possible Sunday night and Monday as a frontal
system crosses the region with showers, but long periods of
sub-VFR are not anticipated.

.MARINE...
SCA gusts expected over the waters this morning, before abating
this afternoon. High pressure building south of the waters
tonight will yield lighter westerly winds, but gusts could
approach SCA thresholds for a period this evening over the lower
Bay and tidal Potomac waters. Low pressure and its associated
cold front will cross the waters late Friday and Friday night
with widespread showers and WSW winds turning gusty, with SCA
conditions likely. Behind the front Friday night, winds will
surge out of the northwest with near Gale Force gusts possible
and persisting into the day on Saturday.

High pressure will build south of the waters late Saturday and
Saturday night, resulting in slackening winds, with SCA
conditions potentially lingering into Saturday evening before
finally retreating.

Winds will start shifting to a more southwesterly direction and
should be waning on Sunday, with sub-SCA gust likely. Another
storm system moving across the region Sunday night into Monday
will bring an increasing risk for SCA gusts.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Anomalies have dropped significantly across our tidal waters
thanks to the northwesterly flow. However, anomalies at the
bottom of the bay are still quite high, over a foot, and as the
winds diminish today and tonight and then turn southerly, at
least some of that will come back up the bay. This poses a risk
of additional minor flooding by the high tide Friday morning.
Coastal Flood Advisories may be necessary. Northerly flow by
Friday night should allow anomalies to drop again.

.CLIMATE...
A non-zero chance of flurries or a mix of rain and snow exists on
Friday night and Saturday. This would be close to the latest on
record.
