.SHORT TERM... (Through Saturday Night)

Elevated convection continues along and just north of I-70 early
this morning with numerous reports of hail.  This activity is on the
nose of a 50 kt southwesterly low level jet, and well north of a
surface front which was across southern portions of MO and IL.
This convection should weaken later this morning and shift further
northeast into northeast MO and west central IL. It looks like
there will be a break in the convection this afternoon, although
could not rule out isolated showers/storms. Unseasonably warm and
humid conditions will continue this afternoon, mainly across
central and southeast MO and southwest IL. Another round of
convection can be expected tonight as the front lifts northward as
a warm front as a surface low develops over the central Plains
ahead of an approaching upper level trough/low. The best coverage
of convection tonight should be across northeast MO and west
central IL with more scattered activity further south. The primary
threat from these storms will be large hail. There should be
another break in the convection Saturday morning, with another
round of severe convection Saturday afternoon into the early
evening as the surface low moves northeastward towards the Great
Lakes region and drags a trailing cold front east-southeastward
through our forecast area Saturday afternoon and evening.
Unseasonably warm and humid conditions can be expected on Saturday
ahead of the cold front with highs about 20 degrees above normal.
It will also be very windy Saturday and Saturday night due to a
tight surface pressure gradient south of the deepening surface
low. Will have CAPE values up to around 2500 J/kg in northeast
MO/west central IL and strong deep layer wind shear Saturday
afternoon due to a 90 kt mid level jet ahead of the upper level
trough. The greatest threat for severe convection will be across
northeast MO and west central IL with surface based storms
possibly containing very large hail, tornadoes and damaging winds.
Convection will shift southeast of the forecast area by late
Saturday night with cooler and less humid air filtering into our
area behind the cold front.

.LONG TERM... (Sunday through Thursday)
Issued at 359 AM CDT Fri Mar 27 2020

A surface ridge will move eastward through our area on Sunday with
temperatures closer to seasonal normals, although still slightly
above normal for the end of March.  Showers will return to our area
Monday night and Tuesday as upper level divergence increases ahead
of an approaching upper level trough.  The surface low will track
eastward through OK and AR and into the TN Valley region.  This will
place us in the cold sector of the storm system.  Could not rule out
isolated, embedded and elevated convection, but the better threat
for storms should be south of the forecast area with temperatures
slightly below normal. The precipitation should shift east of the
forecast area Tuesday night as another weak surface ridge moves
eastward through our area. The model solutions begin to diverge
for Wednesday and Thursday with the deterministic GFS trending
cooler, while the ECMWF model was trending warmer. Both keep any
precipitation north and west of the forecast area through
Thursday.

cloud ceiling may remain below 1000 feet in UIN for most of the
forecast period with another round of showers and storms tonight.
MVFR cloud ceilings will likely develop in COU and the St Louis
metro area later this morning with showers and storms mainly this
evening as a warm front lifts northward through the region. An
east wind will gradually veer around to a south-southeast
direction by late tonight as the warm front lifts northward.

SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: MVFR cloud ceilings will likely develop later
this morning with showers and storms mainly this evening as a
warm front lifts northward through the region. The prevailing
cloud ceiling may improve to VFR by this evening. An east-
southeast wind will gradually veer around to a southerly
