Area Forecast Discussion...Updated Aviation National Weather Service Saint Louis MO 701 AM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020 .SHORT TERM... (Through Late Thursday Night) Issued at 325 AM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020 Showers and storms now across western MO ahead of a shortwave over eastern KS will move eastward into central MO and parts of eastern MO by early morning, then shift east into west central and southwest IL by late morning. The models were depicting strong low level moisture convergence over central MO at 12Z Wednesday on the nose of a strong southwesterly low level jet. A warm front will also be lifting northward into southern portions of MO and IL later this morning. Heavy downpours can be expected with rainfall amounts of one half inch for much of the area this morning with isolated amounts approaching 1 inch due to anomalously high precipitable water values. Most of the showers will shift east of our forecast area by 21Z Wednesday. Despite the cloud cover and rain the high temperatures will be warmer today than yesterday and about 5 degrees above normal. The models continued to trend a little cooler for highs today so did not go as warm as previously forecast. There will be a break in the rain across most of our area late this afternoon and this evening, but another round of showers and storms will spread into much of central and eastern MO late tonight and early Thursday morning as upper level divergence increases well ahead of a deep upper level trough approaching the Plains. A second round of showers and storms with heavy downpours and significant rainfall amounts can be expected Thursday morning across most of our forecast area. A surface low moving from the central Plains into the Great Lakes region will drag a cold front southeastward through our forecast area Thursday night. A line of storms, possibly severe is expected ahead of this cold front Thursday afternoon and evening. The low-mid level wind shear will be quite strong due to a 100 kt mid level jet streak moving through our area ahead of the upper level trough. The amount of instability is still in question with at least widespread convection expected during the morning hours, but with unseasonably warm high temperatures Thursday along with relatively high surface dew points ahead of the cold front it appears that a line of severe storms may develop Thursday afternoon and evening across southeast MO into southwest IL with damaging winds the primary threat along with isolated tornadoes. Much colder low temperatures can be expected Thursday night across northeast and central MO and west central IL due to strong cold air advection behind the cold front. GKS .LONG TERM... (Friday through Tuesday) Issued at 325 AM CDT Wed Mar 18 2020 The rain should shift southeast of our forecast area by 12Z Friday. Much colder temperatures can be expected Friday and Friday night as a large and strong 1040 mb surface ridge over the northern Plains builds southeastward into our area. By Friday night and Saturday temperatures will be around 10 degrees below normal. A warming trend will begin by Monday as an upper level ridge moves eastward into the central US with south/southeasterly low level/surface winds returning by Monday night. The chance of rain will return by Tuesday as an upper level trough and associated surface low over the northern Plains with a trailing cold front approaches our area with strong low-mid level warm air advection ahead of the front. They will continue to do so through this morning before moving out by early this afternoon. Expect MVFR/possibly IFR conditions with the rain. Ceilings will persist this afternoon in the low MVFR/IFR range before falling back to predominantly IFR tonight. Showers and thunderstorms will move back into the area overnight. SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue to move through the terminal through 18Z. Expect MVFR/possibly IFR conditions with the rain.
