(Through Late Tuesday Afternoon) Issued at 357 AM CST Mon Jan 13 2020 Skies remained mainly cloudy across the area early this morning other than a few breaks over central and southeast Missouri. These clouds were trapped under a low level inversion, so do not expect the clouds to dissipate during the morning hours. Still expect temperatures too be warmer despite to clouds because of warm air advection. Expect highs today to be in the 40s. Water vapor imagery is showing a shortwave trough over the Rockies early this morning that will weaken as it passes off to our north tonight. This system will have enough lift and moisture to continue a slight chance of rain tonight over northeast Missouri. Otherwise expect mainly cloudy skies tonight as the system moves through with lows staying above freezing as a warm front lifts north of the area. A cold front will move southeast across the area on Tuesday. Highs will climb into the mid 40s to the upper 50s ahead of the front with some sunshine. Britt .LONG TERM... (Tuesday Night through Sunday) Issued at 357 AM CST Mon Jan 13 2020 The latest operational GFS/ECMWF continues to show that a shortwave trough will move quickly across the Upper Midwest on Wednesday with an attendant cold front moving across Missouri and Illinois during the day. Models are showing the best moisture staying south of the area, so will maintain low chance PoPs with the passage of the front. It still appears there will be a much better chance of rain later this week when the GEFS and EPS are in relatively good agreement that a deeper trough will move from the West Coast to the Plains late in the week. Have kept likely/categorical PoPs going Thursday night into Friday night as large scale ascent and moisture transport increases ahead of the trough. GEFS p-type plumes suggest that this will be a mix of rain/freezing rain/snow Thursday night into Friday morning primarily over the northern half of the CWA. This mix will change over to all rain during the day on Friday and Friday night. Saturday and Sunday look dry at this point as a ridge builds in behind the upper trough. Temperatures will be above normal on Wednesday before falling closer to normal on Thursday behind a cold front. (For the 12z TAFs through 12z Tuesday Morning) Issued at 526 AM CST Mon Jan 13 2020 Complicated ceiling forecast this morning, with an area of IFR moving north from the eastern Ozarks into east central Missouri and southwest Illinois, and an MVFR deck between 1000-2000 feet spreading east from central Missouri across eastern Missouri into western Illinois. Most short range guidance is in agreement that the low ceilings will break up/move northward late this morning into the afternoon. This would make some sense as there are breaks in the overcast across southern Illinois and Missouri and sunshine through the breaks should help to dissipate the clouds. That being said, timing the clearing is low confidence at this time, and confidence isn't likely to improve until after the sun works on the low clouds for a few hours and we see them start to recede on satellite pictures. Once the clouds do recede, expect VFR flight conditions to prevail at least through the evening. Additional low cloud and possibly fog development is likely late tonight. SPECIFICS FOR KSTL: IFR ceilings currently at Lambert will likely prevail for several hours this morning.
