...FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM CDT THIS MORNING...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29.

* WHERE...Portions of central, east central and northeast 
  Missouri and south central, southwest and west central 
  Illinois.

* WHEN...Until 9 AM CDT this morning.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other 
  sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor 
  plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent
freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should
be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-
ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tuesday Afternoon)

A surface high currently over the NE-KS-OK region is continuing
to march eastward into our region. Under it's influence the low
stratus deck over the CWA was shunted off to the east, leaving
mostly clear skies for a majority of the day. Through the
remainder of the day and into the evening the high will slide into
our immediate area, loosening the pressure gradient and
drastically decreasing the winds. In spite of the surface high,
mid to high level clouds are advecting into the region along the
south-southwest mid-level flow and will sock in the area by
evening.

Northeasterly flow at the surface continues to advect cool Canadian
air into the Mid Mississippi River Valley. Low temperatures tonight
will once again be near or below freezing across the bi-state area,
though the exact extent of cooling is contingent on the interaction
of a couple of variables. Light winds associated with the surface
high will promote cooling overnight, but the mid-level clouds may
provide enough insulation to counteract that cooling. Operational
model guidance handles advection scenarios well and is trending
cooler, indicating that central and northeast Missouri and west-
central Illinois will be below freezing. Given this, have gone with
a Freeze Warning across portions of central and northeast Missouri
and west-central Illinois.

Tuesday will dawn cloudy and remain so throughout much of the day a
tongue of mid-level moisture continues to advect through the region.
The persistent cloud cover will keep high temperatures in the upper
40s across the region, between 16-19 degrees below normal for mid-
April.

.LONG TERM...  (Tuesday Night through Next Monday)

Tuesday night starts with a s/w rounding the base of the upper trof.
This s/w will bring a chance for snow across northern portions of
the CWA late Tues night into Wed morning. With the column quickly
cooling due to wetbulb effects, precip should be all snow. Any snow
should be east of the CWA shortly after sunrise if not before. Only
minor accumulations, up to a half inch or so, is currently expected.

Otherwise, Tues night will be another cold night with a cold airmass
in place and light winds. Cloud cover remains more uncertain and how
clouds will have an impact on temps. Regardless, continues to look
likely that another night of frost/freeze headlines will be needed.

Minor moderation of temps is expected to begin Wed into Thurs as the
upper flow becomes zonal and the surface ridge moves east. However,
temps are expected to remain below seasonal average thru the end of
the week.

As for precip, more shortwaves embedded within the upper flow
continue to bring additional chances of precip. These appear to be
minor, and precip type will largely be dependent upon when the
precip falls due to low level temps. However, the system Thurs thru
Fri remains intriguing with widespread precip appearing more likely.
Timing differences remain, but this system has more support thru the
column. Depending on timing and track, northern portions of the CWA
may see additional accumulating snowfall.

VFR conditions will prevail through the entire period under the
influence of a surface high approaching from the west. The high
has pushed the MVFR stratus deck from this morning out of the
region. As the high continues to marsh eastward, it will push the
gusty winds out of the area as well, leaving mostly calm winds in
its place. A VFR cloud deck is starting to advect into central
Missouri and should overtake the entire area by sunset.
