Area forecast discussion, Dec 6, 2:08 PM PST, 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
208 PM PST Sun Dec 6 2020

.SYNOPSIS...06/205 PM.

Clear to partly cloudy skies and dry weather will prevail for at
least the next seven days. High temperatures will be several
degrees above normal overall through the period. There will be
moderate to strong Santa Ana winds Monday through Tuesday morning.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...06/204 PM.

Some hi clouds continued to move over the forecast area early this
afternoon, otherwise mostly sunny skies prevailed with little
change expected thru sunset. Offshore pressure gradients to the N
and E continued early this afternoon, with the 20Z LAX-DAG
gradient at -2.0 mb, and the LAX-BFL gradient at -2.7 mb. These
contributed to persistent breezy to locally gusty NE winds mainly
over some of the foothills and mtns, with gusts up to 25 mph
noted. Breezy offshore flow should continue thru this afternoon
over portions of SLO/SBA Counties, but should turn onshore over
VTU/L.A. Counties as the offshore gradients weaken. Temps will be
4-8 deg above normal for most areas this afternoon, with the
warmest vlys and inland coastal areas topping out in the mid 70s
to around 80.

Upper level ridging with H5 heights around 578-579 dm will prevail
this afternoon over swrn CA. A dry 564 dm upper level low over
northern NV will begin to move S this afternoon as well. This
system is forecast to continue tracking S tonight into Mon
morning, reaching SBA/VTU Counties by 18Z Mon, then move off the
coast S of the area thru Mon afternoon. The upper level low
will move to a position well off the nrn Baja coast Mon night
then remain nearly stationary Tue and Tue night, with a broad
easterly flow aloft over srn CA. As this system moves E on Wed,
weak upper level ridging will build into swrn CA.

There may be some hi clouds over the area at times thru Tue,
otherwise mostly clear skies should prevail into Wed. The
increased offshore flow will keep any low clouds over the coastal
waters away from the coast, and even push them further offshore
thru Tue.

Offshore pressure gradients will strengthen tonight into Mon. By 18Z
Mon, the NAM forecasts the LAX-DAG gradient to be around -5.9 mb,
with LAX-BFL around -4.6 mb. The increased offshore gradients
combined with some cold air advection and upper level support will
bring strong and gusty NE winds to the mtns, vlys and coastal
areas of VTU/L.A. Counties by early Mon morning. The winds should
remain quite gusty thru Mon afternoon as the offshore gradients
remain strongly offshore, and even increase further to the N.
Additional strengthening of the winds can be expected Mon night
into Tue morning as offshore gradients to the N and E are forecast
by the NAM to increase by 12Z Tue to -8.2 mb from LAX-DAG, and to
around -6.0 mb from LAX-BFL. 850 MB winds over VTU/L.A. Counties
are forecast to increase to 40-45 kt from late Mon morning thru
early Tue morning, with 950 mb winds forecast to peak around 40-45
kt Mon afternoon, with another peak around 50 kt Mon night into
Tue morning.

Significant 850 mb winds will also affect SLO/SBA Counties and
increase out of the east up to 40-45 kt Mon afternoon and evening.
Lower to mid level winds will be more out of the east and east-
northeast during the period, which is not the most favorable
direction for the strongest of winds to affect VTU/L.A. Counties,
however the direction is more favorable for strong winds over
SLO/SBA Counties due to the orientation of the mountain ranges
there. As a result, strong and gusty NE to E winds are expected
over SLO/SBA Counties mainly from Mon afternoon in the mtns and
Mon night elsewhere then continue into Tue morning.

Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph are expected at times for the
mtns of VTU/L.A. Counties including the Santa Monica Mtns Mon
afternoon thru midday Tue, with isolated gusts to 70 mph possible
Mon night into early Tue. With the afternoon zone package, a Wind
Advisory will be issued for late tonight and Mon morning to Mon
afternoon for these areas, then this will be upgraded to a High
Wind Warning thru Tue morning. Widespread high-end Wind
Advisories will also be issued for the rest of VTU/L.A Counties,
except for the Antelope Vly, generally from Mon morning thru Tue
morning, and for SLO/SBA Counties except for the SLO County
Interior Vlys and Cuyama Vly generally from Mon afternoon to early
evening thru early Tue morning. Wind gusts in these areas should
be in the 45 to 55 mph range at times, with isolated gusts to 60
mph in the hills and mtns. Please see the latest Non-
Precipitation Weather Message (LAXNPWLOX) for the latest info on
the upcoming High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories.

High temps should cool some for the mtns and deserts on Mon, while S
of the mtns it should be a few degrees warmer with the increased
offshore flow and adiabatic warming. Highs in the vlys and coastal
areas should reach the mid to upper 70s. Temps on Tue should warm up
another 5 to 10 deg S of the mtns and reach the low to mid 80s for a
lot of the coast and vlys. Wed will turn cooler but remain 5-10
deg above normal for many areas away from the coast.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...06/204 PM.

The deterministic runs of the GFS and ECMWF are in good agreement
through the extended period. The upper low off Baja will move
inland over nrn Mexico while weakening Wed night and Thu. Flat
upper level ridging will move into SW CA on Thu then linger thru
Sun as H5 heights slowly increase. By Sun, H5 heights should be in
the 581-583 range over the area according the GFS, while the EC
had a sharper upper level ridge with H5 heights in 585-586 dm
range. The mean ensembles were showing a weaker upper ridge with
H5 heights around 579-580 dm. Overall, it looks like offshore
pressure gradients to the N and E will persist for the most part
thru the extended period, especially night and morning hours.

Dry weather will continue Thu thru Sun over SW CA with mostly
clear skies thru the period. Breezy offshore flow can be expected
night and morning hours, altho may be weak to light onshore on
Thu, and a little bit stronger on Sat. Temps will turn cooler Thu
and Fri but stay a few degrees above normal especially for inland
areas of VTU/L.A. Counties. It looks like a warming trend will
take place in all areas Sat and Sun, with highs about 5-10 deg
above normal for mid-December. Highs over next weekend should be
in the 70s for much of the coast and vlys.

A large, long period west to northwest swell will affect all
waters late Monday through early Wednesday, then will slowly
diminish but stay elevated through late in the week. The swell
will peak on Tuesday at 14 to 17 feet off the Central Coast and
to 6 to 9 feet from Santa Barbara to Orange County. This will
create hazardous breaking waves near shore, including the Morro
Bay and Ventura Harbor entrances. While this long period swell
will be dominant, there will also be short period waves on top
of it when and where the gusty NE winds are blowing.

.BEACHES...06/154 PM.

A large and long period west to northwest swell will move through
the coastal waters Monday afternoon through Wednesday. The
forerunner waves will have periods longer than 20 seconds Monday
afternoon through early Tuesday. Breaking waves of 16 and 22 feet
will arrive along the Central Coast during the peak of the surf
on Tuesday, with surf of 6 to 12 feet along the beaches of Los
Angeles, Ventura, and parts of southern Santa Barbara counties.

Surf of 20 feet and greater can damage coastal structures like
piers and jetties, so a High Surf Warning has been issued for the
Central Coast. Otherwise, High Surf Advisories are in effect for
the remaining beaches. Dangerous rip currents will develop at
most beaches. Widespread northeast to east winds will flow during
Monday morning through early Tuesday afternoon as well, especially
Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, which could amplify
some waves. Vulnerable harbor entrances such as Morro Bay and
Ventura have a history of dangerous breaking waves under such
conditions. High tides should stay below 5 feet during the event,
so the threat of coastal flooding is minimal.

.FIRE WEATHER...06/935 AM.

Another Santa Ana wind event is expected to begin late tonight
night and continue through Tuesday evening. The Santa Ana winds
are expected to peak in strength and coverage Monday afternoon
through Tuesday morning when wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph will be
likely for the wind favored coastal and valley areas of Los
Angeles and Ventura counties, while damaging gusts of 55 to 70 mph
will be possible for the mountains (including the Santa Monicas).
Also of note with this upcoming event is the upper level wind
support likely bringing unusually strong northeast to east winds
across portions of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties,
especially in the mountains and foothills, where wind gusts of 45
to 60 mph will be possible from late Monday afternoon through
Tuesday morning. While humidities are expected to rise slightly
Monday morning, a drying trend is expected Monday afternoon
through Tuesday when humidities in the teens and single digits
will likely be common. Widespread critical fire weather conditions
will be likely with this event for Los Angeles and Ventura
counties leading to the Red Flag Warning. Meanwhile, a Fire
Weather Watch remains in effect for the mountains, foothills, and
coastal areas of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, where
there is the potential for critical fire weather conditions.

North to northeast offshore flow with dry conditions will continue
through next weekend, with another potential increase in Santa Ana
winds on Friday or Saturday.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (WED-SUN).

Periods of gusty offshore winds and dry conditions could lead to
critical fire weather conditions Wednesday, then again by next
Saturday. High surf or strong rip currents may create hazardous
ocean conditions Wednesday. Sub-freezing conditions are possible
for interior valleys each morning at least through Wednesday.
