.SYNOPSIS...26/339 AM.
A weak front will bring plenty of clouds to the region today. There
is a slight chance of showers in northern areas this afternoon, and
on northern mountain slopes tonight. Areas of gusty northwest to
north winds are expected later today through Monday morning.
Skies will be mostly clear Monday through Saturday. It will be
breezy to windy at times for much of the week. Temperatures will
be near normal to slightly above normal Monday through Wednesday,
with a warming trend expected thereafter.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...26/408 AM.
Marine layer has deepened significantly early this morning, and
low clouds were widespread in all coastal and valley areas, with
the exception of the Santa Clarita Valley and the far interior
valleys of SLO and SBA Counties. Clouds will probably push into
the Santa Clarita Valley by daybreak. Would not be surprised if
there is some local drizzle this morning, especially across
the foothills of L.A. County. Oddly, despite the deep marine
layer, there was still some local dense fog early this morning,
though too localized to require dense fog advisories.
The tail end of a weakening frontal system was located about 60-90
NM off the coast of SLO County early this morning. This front will
continue to fall apart as it moves onshore, but it could bring a
few showers to SLO County later this morning or early this
afternoon.
Skies should become partly cloud in most areas this afternoon,
through the WRF keeps plenty of low level moisture lingering in
coastal sections of L.A. and VTU Counties through the afternoon,
so expect just partial clearing there. Expect significant cooling
across the entire region today, with the best cooling in the
valleys.
Behind the front, increasing N-S gradients, strong subsidence,
cold air advection and strong northwest flow aloft should help
to produce advisory level northwest to north winds to the region
later today into Mon morning, and Wind Advisories have been
issued. Expect advisory level winds to develop across the Santa
Ynez Range and the adjacent south coast of SBA County, through the
Interstate 5 Corridor and in the Santa Clarita Valley by late
afternoon, spreading into the Santa Monica Mountains, and the San
Fernando Valley this evening. Winds should diminish by daybreak
across SBA County, but will likely continue through the morning
across the remainder of the advisory area. Later shifts may have
to consider expanding the Wind Advisory to coastal sections of
L.A. County, especially for areas from Malibu to the Hollywood
Hills.
Winds could get close to advisory level this afternoon
on the Central Coast, and this afternoon and evening across
the Antelope Valley, but they will probably stay just below
thresholds.
Skies should become mostly clear tonight, although the WRF
suggests that some clouds may try to linger across southern L.A.
County. Also, moist northwest to north flow will cause clouds
to pile up across northern slopes of the mtns of VTU County and
far northwestern L.A. County tonight. There is even a slight
chance of rain showers and snow showers through the late night
hours. Snow levels should be above 5500 feet, so do not expect
any issued with snow on I-5 over the Grapevine.
After some early morning clouds on northern slopes and possibly
across southern L.A. County Monday, skies should be sunny. Rising
heights and thicknesses and northerly flow should result in
several degrees of warming in most areas on Monday, with temps
up to near or slightly above normal levels in most areas.
A weak trough will drop through the Pac NW and into the Great
Basin Tue. Gradients will be offshore, so expect some gusty north
to northeast winds Mon night and Tue morning, possibly reaching
advisory levels in some areas. Gusty northwest winds are expected
to develop across SBA County and across the I-5 Corridor late Tue
as the trough passes to the north. Expect mostly clear skies Mon
night and Tue. Max temps on Tue should be similar to those on Mon
in most areas.
.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...25/147 PM.
Windy conditions will linger over the region on Wednesday in the
wake of the inside slider that digs well south into Arizona as a
close low pressure system. Depending on the exact track and
strength of this low, this pattern could support high winds for
our mountains Tuesday night to Wednesday. Gusty north winds will
slowly transition and decrease to northeast Wednesday night to
Thursday as high pressure begins to build back across the area.
Temperatures do not seem to be impacted much by this passing
system next week with afternoon highs continuing to reach the
lower to mid 70s on this side of the mountains, and the 60s across
the Antelope Valley through Thursday. Temperature trends will
move higher late next week and into the weekend as high pressure
builds across the eastern Pacific.
Deterministic models for late next week and beyond continue to
show very minimal precipitation chances and ensembles support a
large ridge of high pressure along the west coast blocking any
significant storm systems through February 2nd. Longer term
ensembles favor rather dry conditions persisting in the following
week through Feb. 9, which is not a good trend as we will start
to push toward a precipitation deficit in the middle of our
wettest weeks of the winter on average.

.AVIATION...26/1114Z.
At 0741Z, the marine layer depth was around 1700 feet deep at
KLAX. The top of the inversion was near 2500 feet with a
temperature of 16 degrees Celsius.
Low-to-moderate confidence in the current forecast. LIFR to IFR
conditions should improve to the IFR to MVFR category by 17Z. IFR
to MVFR conditions will likely linger at coastal terminals until
as late as 22Z. There is a chance that coastal terminals may stay
cloudy throughout the day.
KLAX...IFR to MVFR conditions will likely linger through at least
22Z. There is a 50 percent chance that MVFR conditions will
continue into this evening, then lower to the IFR categories
between 00Z and 03Z. Any east winds should remain less than 7
knots.
KBUR...IFR conditions will likely improve to MVFR between 14Z and
16Z, then linger through at least 18Z. There is a 30 percent
chance of MVFR conditions lingering until as late as 22Z.

Moderate-to-high confidence in the current forecast.
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds and/or seas will likely persist
through Thursday or Friday for the much of the waters north and
west of the Channel Islands. There is a 40 percent chance of low
end Gale Warning conditions from near Point Arguello southwest out
to San Nicolas Island between Monday and Tuesday.
Inside the southern California bight, there is a 70 percent chance SCA
level winds across the Santa Barbara Channel late this afternoon
and tonight. There is a 50-60 percent chance of SCA level winds
and/or seas Monday through Wednesday.

Long period W to NW wave energy will linger across the coastal
waters into Thursday and high surf will likely continue at area
beaches for periods of time into late next week. Surf should
build once again tonight and additional High Surf Advisories are
likely, which could persist through at least Tuesday. With
increasing northwest winds off the coast, there will be building
short period waves on top of the swell.
