...HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Temperatures 85-90 expected near the coast and 90-100 
  inland, warmest in the Los Angeles and Ventura County valleys.

* WHERE...Coast and valleys of southwest California, including 
  the Santa Monica Mountains.

* WHEN...Until 9 PM PDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Hot temperatures could linger well into 
  the evening and some areas may not drop below 70 degrees 
  overnight.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when
possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone
overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

.SYNOPSIS...04/914 PM.

There will be a significant warming trend this week with
temperatures approaching the 100 degree mark by midweek. Gusty
northerly winds will continue across the area through Thursday
morning, especially over southern Santa Barbara County and the I-5
Corridor. Friday will be five to ten degrees cooler with patchy
low clouds along the LA coast in the morning. A cooling trend
will continue through the weekend into early next week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...05/251 AM.

No real change to the forecast thinking. Still looking at 3 days
of very warm temps and gusty winds.

This morning's winds were a little bit weaker than last night and
have dipped below advisory levels. Will cancel the wnd advisory
for the the mtns at 300 am along with expiring advisory for SBA
county.

Currently there are offshore grads from both the east and the
north. Not strong enough to produce advisory level winds but
strong enough to bring above normal temps to all areas. Max temps
will rise 2 to 6 degrees from ydy's values with max temps in the
90s in the vlys and the 80s along the coast. The W-E grad is
forecast to rebound to 3.5 MB onshore this afternoon if this
gradient comes in weaker the coastal max temps could end up 2 to 5
degrees warmer than fcst.

Winds are the big issue tonight. Current gradient forecast for
SBA-SMX and SBA-BFL is about 4 MB offshore with a 7 MB offshore
push forecast for the LAX-BFL grad. There is no upper support and
given the weaker than fcst winds tonight do not want to pull the
trigger on the watch just yet but think right that the winds will
be stronger across the SBA south coast then the I-5 corridor and
the there will only be isolated 60 mph gusts across the ridgetops
of the Santa Ynez range. Low temps wherever it is breezy may only
drop into the upper 60s.

A little warmer on Wednesday during the day as the offshore flow
continues under sunny skies. The best warming will occur across
the LA south coast and the San Gabriel Vly where there will be 3
to 6 degrees of warming. The rest of the cst/vlys will only see 1
to 3 degrees. Max temps across the csts and vlys will be 10 to 20
degrees above normal. Again if the forecasted afternoon switch to
easterly onshore is delayed or weaker than forecast the coastal
temps will end up warmer than fcst.

The north grads are weaker (but still moderately offshore)
Wednesday night. These grads will only produce advisory level
winds. The winds will shut off earlier than tonight because the E
to W offshore gradient will be increasing to between 3 and 4 MB
and this will switch the winds to the NE. There is no upper
support but there could be a brief burst of advisory level winds
in the areas most prone to them (Simi Vly for example). Again the
breezy areas will see warm overnight lows with some areas
remaining in the 70s.

Thursday will be the warmest day. It is the most day most likely
to remain offshore through the mid afternoon. Again the forecast
assumes the gradient forecast is correct but if the EC is correct
and the flow remains offshore through day the temps will be warmer
than the already very warm temps forecast. Right now the max temps
are likely to rise 1 to 3 degrees which would bring 90 degree
temps not only to the vlys but also the interior coastal areas.
There will likely be a couple 100 degrees max temps as well.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...05/312 AM.

A weak ridge will pop up over the area Fri/Sat as the west coast
is squeezed between rather large trofs. But the ridging will not
have much affect on the temperatures which will be much more
influenced by the onshore trends both the north and the east.
There is a chc some marine layer clouds might develop under the
strong inversion early Friday morning over the LA county coast.
Low clouds are more likely Saturday morning and will likely make a
return to the SBA west coast as well. Look for 5 to 10 degrees of
cooling on Friday and another 2 to 4 degrees on Saturday. Even
with that cooling max temps will still be 5 to 10 degrees above
normal.

A fairly strong upper low will move into the Pac NW Sun and Mon
and will flatten the flow as well as dropping hgts. More
importantly it will continue to boost the onshore trends. The
falling hgts and increasing onshore flow will increase the marine
layer clouds and most of the coasts and vlys should wake up to low
clouds each morning. It the GFS is correct there will be an 8.5 MB
onshore push to the east Monday afternoon which would likely keep
more than a few beaches cloudy all day. Max temps will fall 2 to 3
degrees each day and by Monday max temps will be at or even below
normal.

.AVIATION...05/1211Z.

At 0830Z at KLAX, there was a surface based inversion. The top of
the inversion was at 1900 feet at a temperature of 24 Celsius.

High confidence in all CAVU TAFs. KSBA will have occasional north
wind gusts 01Z-12Z. Gusty northerly winds are also possible at
KBUR and KVNY 03Z-12Z.

KLAX...High confidence in TAF. High confidence in an east wind
component remaining 5 kt or less through 17Z.

KBUR...High confidence in TAF. There is a chance of occasional
gusty northerly winds tonight 03Z-12Z.

.MARINE...05/221 AM.

Overall, moderate confidence in forecast. Gusty northwest winds
will continue to persist through Thursday with good confidence
that the strongest winds will occur this afternoon through
tonight. These winds will generate widespread short-period and
steep seas, especially today and Wednesday. These conditions will
pose a risk for all small craft. Fairly high confidence in gale
force gusts along the outer waters along the Central Coast
southward to San Nicolas Island. Winds across the Santa Barbara
Channel will likely exceed Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level this
afternoon, with a 30% chance of gale force gusts especially along
the western portion.

Moderate confidence that winds will relax to below SCA criteria on
Friday through the weekend. With a return of the marine layer by
this weekend, there is a chance of dense fog impacting the waters
during the overnight through morning hours.
