More cooling is expected on Tuesday as the high pressure weakens
and onshore flow strengthens. Gusty Santa Ana winds expected Tuesday
afternoon and Wednesday with warmer temperatures for coast and
valleys but cooler for interior areas. Fire danger will remain
elevated through Thursday. A warming trend is expected for inland
areas over the weekend.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...07/201 PM.
Very interesting day today with an aggressive marine layer south
of Pt Conception that pushed onshore near Long Beach and across
the Oxnard plain. And the combo with the thick smoke brought temps
down even more than expected with some areas as much as 30
degrees cooler than yesterday and Excessive Heat Warnings in those
areas will be cancelled. Though still very hot in other areas.
107 at SLO Airport (which is amazingly DOWN 9 degrees from
yesterday at this time). Yet only 62 at Morro Bay just a short
distance to the west.
Low clouds expected to push farther north and inland tonight and
provide some additional temperature relief Tuesday for
coast/valleys. Far interior areas such as the Antelope Valley will
see cooling as well as cold air dropping into the Great Basin
with the upper low will spread west into California.
Another interesting day Tuesday though which starts out like a
typical onshore/marine layer day but quickly shifts to a Santa Ana
day for inland parts of LA/Ventura Counties. In an odd twist
west/east gradients actually trend strongly offshore during the
daytime, starting out at almost 4mb onshore in the morning but
then becoming almost -2mb offshore in the afternoon with a robust
9mb offshore trend from this afternoon. Historically when the
trends are that strong the momentum from that rapid shift in
gradients can be the driving force to generate strong winds and
push them to the coast and beyond even without the good cold air
advection we typically need for that to happen. And in fact high
res models do show exactly that, though the winds will take
longer to reach the coast.
Santa Ana winds expected to peak in strength late Tuesday night
through early afternoon Wednesday. There is a chance that ridge
tops in LA County, including the western part of the Santa Monicas
could see wind gusts close to 60 mph but for now am favoring
advisory level winds for the majority of LA/Ventura Counties.
Temps will warm back up for coast/valleys of LA/Ventura Counties
and could be warmest, or at least just as warm at the coast as the
valleys.
Winds expected to drop off pretty quick late Wednesday though
there is enough left over northeasterly flow and gradient Thursday
morning to keep some locally gusty winds going. Coastal areas will
see quite a drop in temps Thu but not as much in the valleys and
likely warmer for interior areas as the cold air from the trough
exits to the east.

Both the GFS and EC agree that a ridge will slowly build in on
Fri and then persist through the weekend.
Hgts build enough and offshore flow increases some over the
weekend and this will allow for widespread warming each day. By
Sunday most areas will be 4 to 8 degrees warmer than normal.
There should be enough offshore flow to keep the marine layer
stratus away from the coasts, but would not be totally surprised
if there were some low clouds around western SBA county and
southern LA county Sat and Sun.

At 19Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 900 feet deep. The inversion
extended up to 3800 feet and 35 degrees Celsius.
Low confidence in all TAFs. IFR/MVFR FU possible anywhere through
at least Tuesday, especially KWJF KPMD KPRB, SCT-BKN080-150 FU
layers likely everywhere. Low confidence on how the current MVFR
FU will evolved at KPMD KWJF. Shallow marine layer could bring
IFR CIGS/VIS to KLGB KLAX KSMO KOXR KCMA KSBA at anytime through
00Z, but unsure when and if it will occur. South winds at coastal
site are lasting longer than expected, but should turn more
westerly by 22Z. CIGS will likely expand in coverage greatly
tonight into Tuesday. LIFR possible at KSMX, but IFR will be most
common everywhere else. Gusty NE winds will start to form late
Tuesday morning aloft, possibly reaching KVNY by 18Z.
KLAX...Very low confidence in TAF. SE winds should turn SW staring
21-23Z. SE winds likely to reform after 06Z, with 40 percent
chance of exceeding 8KT, best window 12-18Z. Unsure on timing of
CIGS, with an onset window of 06-10Z. IFR/MVFR likely most common
category.
KBUR...VFR likely through 06Z, with FU SCT-BKN100. 70 percent
chance of IFR CIGS tonight, beginning 09-15Z. SE winds likely to
be stronger and longer lasting than usual.

High confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) northwesterly winds
reforming by this evening from the Central Coast to San Nicolas
Island. These winds will likely continue into Tuesday morning then
become confined to the far NW waters before going away Tuesday
night. SCA northeast Santa Ana winds are likely Wednesday morning.
The winds are not expected to affect Avalon or Two Harbors, with
the chance less than 20 percent. Dense fog with poor visibilities
are possible anywhere through into Tuesday, especially in the
Santa Barbara Channel through this evening, and on the Central
Coast Tuesday morning. A long period 2 to 3 foot southwest swell
will fill the waters tonight and Tuesday.

.FIRE WEATHER...07/938 AM.
Strong high pressure will continue to bring very hot and dry
conditions to the area today with many areas away from the
coast well over 100 degrees today. With the very hot
conditions, low relative humidity (in the single digits and
teens) will continue today with poor recovery tonight. As for
winds, expect northerly winds to diminish late this morning
and early afternoon, with some weak onshore winds developing.
However, by late this afternoon and evening, the northerly winds
will once again increase (with gusts around 35 mph in the windier
spots). So, CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER conditions are still expected
across the mountains of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles
counties, as well as the SBA South Coast, through this evening
and the RED FLAG WARNING will remain in effect until 1000 PM this
evening. Elsewhere, elevated fire weather conditions can be
expected today. The very hot and unstable conditions will continue
to bring a significant threat of large plume dominated fires with
extreme fire behavior across the region through this evening. Also
the potential shift of winds from an offshore to an onshore
direction this afternoon across the mountains will produce dangerous
conditions for firefighters.
More widespread cooling is expected on Tuesday. The first Santa Ana
wind event of the season still looks to impact portions of Ventura
and Los Angeles counties Tuesday through Wednesday, likely bringing
humidities into the teens and single digits. During the peak of the
event Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph
are expected across the mountains, with gusts of 30 to 45 mph in the
valleys and coasts. A FIRE WEATHER WATCH remains in effect for much
of Los Angeles and Ventura counties as there is the potential for
critical fire weather conditions. Also of note, is the critically dry
fuels in place following this record heat wave. Still on track for a
significantly offshore LAX-DAG gradient Wednesday morning, ranging
between -6.0 and -.7.0 MB which is very rare for early September.
