.Strong high pressure will continue to bring a dangerous heat 
wave and low humidities to Southwest California through at least 
Labor Day. The very hot and unstable conditions will bring a 
significant threat of large plume dominated fires during this 
time. Gusty Sundowner winds across southern Santa Barbara county 
and gusty northerly winds in the Los Angeles and Ventura county 
mountains (especially near the Interstate 5 corridor) will likely 
bring critical fire weather conditions to these areas, resulting 
in the issuance of the Red Flag Warning. The critically dry fuels 
in these areas will result in a greater threat of fire ignitions 
as well as rapid fire growth. With an extremely hot air mass in 
place, the development of Sundowner winds will likely push 
temperatures even hotter across the south coast of Santa Barbara 
County and adjacent foothills, where temperatures of 95 to 110 
degrees and humidities between 8 and 15 percent will be likely in 
the foothills and wind prone coastal areas.

  overnight recovery.

* Impacts...If fire ignition occurs, conditions will be 
  favorable for rapid fire spread, long range spotting, and

.SYNOPSIS...05/226 AM.

Very hot temperatures will persist across the region through early
next week with record high temperatures expected today and Sunday.
Overnight lows will also be quite warm so there is a high risk of
heat illness. There is a chance of Santa Ana winds on Tuesday and
Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-MON)...05/911 AM.

A super-strong H5 high over NV and UT today (601 dm) will drift
back into NV for Sun and weaken slightly to 599 dm. By Mon the
upper level high will move into CA and weaken some more to around
592 dm in the afternoon. Southwestern CA will be under the
southern and swrn portion of the upper level high thru the period,
with H5 heights of around 596-598 dm today and 597-599 dm for
Sun, then fall to about 592 dm by late Mon afternoon. A broad E-SE
flow aloft will prevail thru Sun then turn more northerly for
Mon. Some mid level moisture should move into the area this
weekend with a few altocu at times, otherwise any monsoonal
moisture will be minimal.

The dangerous heat wave will peak today and Sunday across
southwestern CA. Temps at sunrise this morning were already in the
upper 80s to lower 90s over many foothill locations, which is
reflective in the morning soundings with surface-based inversions at
both VBG and LAX, and temps from 92 to 94 deg at the top of the
inversion between about 2200 and 2700 ft. 950 mb temps still on
track to top out in the 35-40 deg C range this afternoon, with
thicknesses in the 587-590 dm range. In addition, gradients at 15Z
were offshore to the N and E (-2.4 mb LAX-DAG and -2.3 mb LAX-BFL).
The LAX-DAG gradient was 1.5 mb more offshore at 15Z than the
operational NAM was predicting. These gradients may stay offshore
most of the day, even to the E. All this will lead to extremely hot
temperatures across the region today, with near all-time highs
possible for some areas, such as the San Fernando and San Gabriel
Vlys. Excessively hot temps will even affect inland areas of the
coastal plain today. Widespread temps in the 105-115 degree range is
expected for the inland coastal plain, vlys, lower mtns and
deserts, with the very hottest locations in the western San
Fernando Vly possibly reaching near 120 degrees. These highs will
be 15-25 degrees above seasonal norms.

Overnight lows tonight will also be exceptionally warm for many
areas. Most coast and vlys will be 10-20 deg above normal while the
foothills and mtns should be about 15-30 deg above normal. The NAM
was forecasting at 950 mb offshore flow and temps in the 35-38
deg range tonight, with some breezy foothills and lower mtns
likely not dropping below 90 degrees. The vlys will likely be in
the upper 70s to low 80s, with coastal areas expected to fall only
into the 70s for many areas. This will only lead to further heat
stress.

Little change can be expected for Sunday, with widespread 950 mb
temps 35-40 deg C and thicknesses even higher at around 588-591 dm.
Also, NAM fcst LAX-DAG gradient at 12Z is -1.8 mb, which may be
under-forecasted. Widespread highs in the 105-115 degree range will
occur again, with the very hottest locations topping out near 120
degrees. SLO/SBA Counties will warm several more degrees for Sun,
with Paso Robles possibly reaching 116 degrees which would exceed
their all-time hi of 115.

Onshore flow will increase some Sun night into Mon. Lows Sun night
will continue to be much above normal, with cooler temps expected
Mon, but still excessively hot for many areas away from the
immediate coast. Widespread highs Mon will be in the 100-112
degree range for inland areas.

It cannot be stressed enough that is is a very dangerous and life-
threatening heat wave, and among the hottest we have seen in many
years. People are urged to use common sense, keep well-hydrated
and stay out of the heat and in air-conditioned locations as much
as possible. The Excessive Heat Warning continues thru Mon across

Otherwise, mostly clear skies will cover the region today thru Mon,
altho scattered mid-level will move into the region from the SE from
time-to-time, and a few afternoon cu may develop over the higher
mtns of L.A. County.

In addition, gusty north sundowner winds can be expected each
evening through Mon for southern SBA County. These winds combined
with 950 mb temps 36-39 deg C will bring hot temps to the area
during the evening hours thru Sun, possibly to 100 degrees even
down to the coast. Gusty NW winds will also be possible in the
L.A/VTU County mtns Sun evening and Mon evening, with very warm
temps and low humidities. The gusty winds, warm temps and low
humidities will likely bring critical fire weather conditions to
the area at times. Please see the fire weather discussion below
for more details.

.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...05/316 AM.

It looks like there will be another round of north winds Monday
night, but this time the strongest winds will be focused through
the I-5 corridor where a low end wind advisory may be needed.

Moderate onshore flow will develop Tuesday as an east Pacific high
builds in. Hgts will continue to fall as the upper high weakens
and elongates. 591 DaM hgts and the moderate onshore flow will
combine to drop max temps another 4 to 8 degrees with 10 degree
drops common across the Central Coast. Despite this cooling max
temps will be 6 to 12 degrees above normal.

Both the EC and GFS agree that a powerful trof will move out of
the Canadian prairie and skirt along the eastern flank of the
Rockies. Strong Sfc high pressure will build in in its wake and
this will result in 6 to 7 MB of easterly offshore flow Wednesday
along with a little cold air advection. This will result in a
Santa Ana wind event that will begin in the mtns Tue evening and
spread to coast by early Wed morning. Like with most Santa Anas
the interior will cool a few degrees while the vlys will warm and
the coasts will warm even more. These winds will bring very low
humidities and critical fire weather conditions.

The offshore flow weakens but does not reverse Thursday morning.
There will be some canyon winds but nothing too much. Temperature
trends will reverse and the interior will warm some while the
coasts and vlys see a reduction in max temps.

A stronger sea breeze due to increased onshore flow will bring
even more cooling to the coasts and vlys Friday while the
interiors sees little change in temps. Despite the cooling max
temps will end up 6 to 12 degrees above normal with triple digit
temps likely in the warmest vly locations.

At 12Z at KLAX there was no marine layer. There was a surface
based inversion up to 2200 feet at 36 C.

High confidence in TAFs. There is a 20 percent chc of LIFR conds
at KSMX through 16Z.

KLAX...High confidence in TAF. Any east wind component will be
under 4 kt.

KBUR...High confidence in CAVU TAF.

High confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds persisting
from the Central Coast to San Nicolas Island through Monday night,
with a 30 percent chance of touching Gale Force on Monday. These
winds could bleed into the western half of the Santa Barbara
Channel each evening. There is also a 40 percent chance of low end
SCA west winds over the inner waters from Santa Barbara to San
Pedro this afternoon and evening. These winds will generate
widespread short period seas everywhere.

.FIRE WEATHER...04/442 PM.

Strong high pressure will bring a dangerous heat wave and
low humidities to Southwest California through at least Labor Day.
This heat wave will likely be hotter and more widespread than the
recent heat wave two weeks ago, which helped fuel several fires
including the Lake Fire. High temperatures away from the beaches
will vary from 100 to 115 degrees, with isolated temperatures up
to 118 degrees in the warmest valleys over the weekend. The
hottest days for much of the area are expected to be Saturday and
Sunday, which coincides with the days of weak offshore flow
during the morning hours. Temperatures will remain warm at night
over the weekend adding to the heat stress and fire weather
concerns, with many areas remaining in the 70s to lower 80s, with
mid 80s to lower 90s in the foothills. Minimum humidities between
5 and 20 percent will be common across many areas away from the
beaches. The very hot and unstable conditions will bring a
significant threat of large plume dominated fires with extreme
fire behavior across the region through Labor Day, resulting in
elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions across all of
Southwest California.

While winds will generally be light or terrain driven in most
areas, Sundowner wind gusts between 25 and 40 mph are likely
Saturday night, and locally up to 45 mph Sunday and Monday nights.
Similar northerly winds are also expected across the I-5 corridor
on Sunday night and Monday night. With an extremely hot air mass
in place, the development of Sundowner winds over the weekend into
Monday will likely push temperatures even hotter across the South
Coast of Santa Barbara County and adjacent foothills, where
temperatures over 100 degrees and humidities between 8 and 15
percent will be possible. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for
the mountains and Santa Barbara south coast due to the combination
of gusty northerly winds, low humidities, very hot temperatures,
and critically dry fuels. Slight cooling is expected across
portions of the coast by Monday (other than southern Santa Barbara
county), with more widespread cooling by Tuesday. There is
increasing confidence that our first Santa Ana wind event of the
season will impact portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties
Tuesday into Wednesday night, bringing a potential of single
digit humidities. As a result, critical Red Flag fire weather
conditions will be possible across portions of Los Angeles and
Ventura counties by Tuesday or Wednesday. Long range computer
models showing the potential for a LAX-Daggett gradient of around
-6 mb or greater for Wednesday morning which is very rare for
early September.

Widespread dangerously hot conditions are likely to continue
Monday, with increased risk for heat related illnesses for most
people. Gusty northerly winds and dry conditions will lead to

and gusty Santa Ana winds will be possible Tuesday night and
Wednesday.
