Updated Aviation Section

.SYNOPSIS...25/701 PM.

Temperatures will cool slightly for the next two days, with highs
in the 70s and 80s for all areas on Monday. Warming into the 80s
to mid 90s is expected on Tuesday, followed by gradual cooling
through Friday. Skies will be clear except for patchy dense fog
along the coast of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties tonight into
early Sunday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...25/857 PM.

***UPDATE***

Dense fog is the only noteworthy weather item on tonight's agenda.
A large patch of it continues to hug the Los Angeles County
coast, with random short surges inland then retreatings.
Visibilities are hovering around one quarter of a mile thanks to a
very shallow marine near 500 feet. Not very sure how the fog will
evolve tonight but as the onshore winds turn southeasterly
tonight, the most probable outcome has the fog expanding over most
of the LA Basin and trying to push northward into the Santa
Barbara Channel. A Dense Fog Advisory may be needed for the LA
Coastal sections if that expansion does develop as the
visibilities in that fog should not improve much if at all. The
temperature inversion on top of that shallow marine layer remains
strong, which means another warm night for the foothill locations.
High clouds will continue to stream into the area through
tomorrow, but they are much thinner than the current satellite
suggests so toned down the cloudiness some. Temperatures tomorrow
still look lower everywhere thanks to more onshore flow and the
high pressure aloft weakening. The Heat Advisories were allowed to
expire as a result, but it will still be about 10-15 degree above
normal for this time of the year.

***From Previous Discussion***

Synoptically, the pattern is dominated by an upper-level high
located to our south that has built a 588DM ridge over us. By 00Z
on Monday the flow is more zonal as the high retreats a bit and
the effects of a deep low in the Gulf of Alaska ripple down. By
Tuesday that low has moved eastward over the Dakotas and the ridge
moves back up over us similar to today. By Thursday a 534DM low in
the Gulf of ALaska will extend its trof all the way down to our
area and finally begin to drop the heights and let some cooling
begin.

Sunday and Monday will be similar to today with slight cooling
each day due to mild drops in height from our current 588DM down
to about 584DM. Max temps will fall 4 to 8 degrees Sunday, with up
to 10-12 degrees of cooling in some portions of the Ventura
valleys, and then another 2 to 4 degrees on Monday away from the
coast. The western parts of the Santa Barbara south coast will see
some gusty northerly winds, but it should be sub-advisory in
strength.

Skies will be mostly clear through the period except for some
marine layer stratus late night through early morning in the Long
Beach area.

Models indicate the return of the ridge on Tuesday bringing
heights back to to the 588DM level. Downtown LA will be near
90-degrees again. There should be better onshore flow on Tuesday
than these is today, so it should be a less impactful event along
the coast.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...25/146 PM.

Tuesday's ridge will be short lived as a fairly large Gulf of
Alaska low will approach the Pacific Northwest and switch the flow
over the state to Southwesterly on Wednesday. This flow pattern
will persist through Saturday and it will cool 2 to 4 degrees a
day Wednesday through Saturday - although afternoon high
temperatures will still be above normal at most locations through
the period. Models show an increasing offshore push from the north
on both Wednesday and Thursday nights and the Santa Barbara south
coast and I-5 corridor may see a return to gusty conditions. By
Saturday the heights will have dropped to around 576 DM and
downtown LA may stay below 80 degrees for the first time in a
while.

Skies should be mostly clear or at worst partly cloudy through the
period depending on how much high clouds drift overhead. The only
exception will be Wednesday night and Thursday morning when the
offshore flow from the north is the weakest and the onshore flow
to the east is the strongest. These gradients and the cyclonic
flow may well combine and produce some stratus for the LA county
coast.

.AVIATION...26/0504Z.

At 05Z at KLAX, there was a 500 foot marine layer. The inversion
top was at 1500 feet with a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius.

70 percent chance of LIFR conditions sometime tonight or Sunday
at KLGB KLAX KSMO, 20 percent chance of LIFR conditions at KCMA
KOXR, 10 percent chance at KSBA KSMX. Low confidence on timing.
High confidence in VFR cats continuing elsewhere through Sunday.

KLAX...70 percent chance of LIFR/VLIFR FG conditions sometime
tonight, low confidence in timing. Most likely onset between 07Z
and 10Z. East winds likely after 08Z, but high confidence in
staying under 8 KT.

KBUR...High confidence in VFR conditions and typical winds through
Sunday.

&&

.MARINE...25/831 PM.

High confidence in gusty NW winds continuing into early next
week, through at least Monday night. There is a 30 percent chance
of these winds reaching Gale Force through late this evening
beyond 30 miles from the Central Coast, and a 60 percent chance of
more widespread Gales across these waters from Sunday afternoon
through late Monday night. While winds may subside below Gale
Force late Monday, there is a 40% chance that Gales continue, with
at least SCA winds through Thursday. These persistent winds will
maintain a significant short period swell over most coastal
waters.

Dense fog with visibility under one mile will continue through
early Sunday off Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange Counties as well
as the Central Coast.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (TUE-SAT).

hazards through next week, peaking at the end of the weak when
locally damaging winds are possible.
