.SYNOPSIS...25/331 AM.

Christmas will be a partly cloudy day with temperatures near
normal. Then increasing clouds to the north. It will be cloudy
and cooler with a chance of rain tonight into early Saturday
mainly affecting the Central Coast on Saturday. Sunday will be
cloudy and mostly dry except for a chance of Central Coast rain in
the late afternoon. Rain will overspread the entire forecast
Sunday night into Monday along with snow accumulations above 5000
ft.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...25/809 AM.

***UPDATE***

Very nice Christmas day on tap for Srn CA today. There will be
increasing high clouds over SLO and SBA county but VTA and LA
counties should remain mostly sunny. Weak offshore flow and a pop
up ridge will contribute about 10 degrees of warming (15 in the
Antelope Vly) south of Pt Conception. Increasing onshore flow,
however, will knock 5 to 8 degrees off of temps across the Central
Coast.

The weak system is a little slower than previously forecast and
the light Central Coast rain will likely hold off until late
evening or after midnight. No real change to the strength of the
system - it will be weak with rainfall confined to SLO and
western SBA county. Those areas can only expect a tenth of an inch
or less, except up to a quarter inch around the coastal hills of
extreme NW SLO County

The Current forecast is in good shape and there will be no morning
update.

***From Previous Discussion***

There will be plenty of clouds banking up against the northern
slopes of the Ventura and Santa Barbara County Mtns as well as the
eastern portion of SLO interior valleys Saturday where a few
sprinkles could occur. Skies will become partly cloudy skies for
most areas on Saturday.

Saturday, widespread cooling up to 6 degrees across most areas
with 10-15 degrees cooling across the interior portions of SBA and
SLO Counties.

By Sunday morning, skies will become mostly cloudy as a more
significant storm system pushes in across the Central Coast
initially Sunday evening before overspreading the entire forecast
area late Sunday night into Monday. an elongated cold upper low
(536DM) will start to rotate towards the Bay area with an
associated trough moving across the forecast area. The track of
the system now looks to not be quite as deep across SoCal, except
the trough does dig and dive down once it moves past L.A. County
and should affect San Diego with better lift dynamics to give them
slightly more rain than Ventura and L.A. Counties. The main
impacts of this storm system will occur on Monday and will give
more details in the long term portion of the forecast discussion.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...25/410 AM.

As mentioned in the short term portion of the discussion, an
elongated cold upper low (536DM) will start to rotate towards the
Bay area with an associated trough Sunday moving across the
forecast area initially Sunday evening, then overspread the entire
forecast area late Sunday night into Monday. The track of the
system now looks to not be quite as deep across SoCal, except the
trough does dig and dives down past L.A. County into San Diego
County with better lift dynamics to give them slightly more rain
than Ventura and L.A. Counties. PWAT values are only around a half
inch and with this cold system, rainfall totals are not expected
to be very efficient, even in the elevated foothills of LA/VTU
Counties. However, models do show some SW flow at the lower levels
Monday morning while a 110 KT jet (Left Front quad) moves across
the area. So there will be some decent PVA briefly. Both the NAM-
WRF and GFS are not picking up on the heavier rainfall Monday
morning across LA and VTU Counties, but the ECMWF does. So,
although models are in agreement with timing aspects of this storm
system, it seems rainfall totals will avg 0.25 to 0.50 inches
except slightly higher for the San Gabriel Mtns, but EC
advertising around 1.25" with this system. I feel SW facing slopes
will see some enhanced rainfall, but not as efficient as I would
like to see.

Some potential impacts will be the possibilty of debris flow across
recent burn areas, but as each successive model run comes in, it's
hard to think peak rainfall-rates will exceed 0.33" per hour. It
will be very cold aloft as the front pushes through and behind it
which could cause some convective showers to develop. So I dont want
to say there is no threat of minor debris flows, especially around
the Bobcat Burn area, but will continue to monitor. Lastly, Snow
levels will drop to 4000-5000 ft by early Mon, and to around 4000
ft or slightly lower Mon afternoon. Accumulating snowfall is likely
to occur above these levels, with the potential for 2-5 inches except
4-8 inches across the Eastern San Gabriel Mtns above 5000 ft. The
top of the Grapevine on Interstate 5 could see non accumulating snow
Monday evening through the overnight hours, as most the precip will
have pushed east

As with most December rain events max temps will come in right
around 60 degrees across the coasts and vlys or about 3 to 6
degrees blo normal.

By Tue and Wed a ridge builds into the west coast and the
gradients trend toward neutral bringing pleasant conditions.
Skies will be partly cloudy and there will be 2 to 4 degrees of
warming each day and by Wednesday cst/vly temps will be mostly
range from the mid 60s to lower 70s. By Thursday more zonal flow
aloft will continue to bring in seasonal temperatures with partly
cloudy skies continuing over the forecast area.

At 1700Z, there was a surface-based inversion at KLAX. The top of
the inversion was around 700 ft with a temperature of 16 deg C.

Overall, expect just high clouds across the region today. Some mid
level clouds will move into northern areas this evening as a
weakening frontal system approaches the Central Coast. There could
even be some MVFR cigs mainly north of Pt. Conception later
tonight into Sat morning, and there could also be a few showers
there later tonight. Otherwise and elsewhere, VFR conditions are
expected thru Sat morning.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in the
forecast. Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conds are not expected thru

Sat afternoon thru Tue. Winds will be at or above SCA level most
of that time, especially across the southern two zones
(PZZ673/676).

For the Inner Waters N of Pt. Sal, good confidence in the forecast.
Winds and seas should remain below SCA levels thru tonight. Seas
will likely be at or above SCA levels Sat thru Tue. There is a
40-50% chance of SCA level NW winds Sat afternoon/evening, and a
30% chance of SCA level NW winds in the afternoon/evening hours
Sun thru Tue.

For the Inner Waters south of Pt. Conception, low to moderate
