Waves continue to decrease this morning and are now below 3 feet
at both the Wilmette and Michigan City buoys.

Over the past few days, dangerous conditions were present along
the Lake Michigan shores in Illinois and Indiana. Peak waves
heights of 9.8 ft and 8.5 feet were measured at the Wilmette and
Michigan City buoys, respectively, with heights greater than 5
feet from the morning of 8/3 to earlier this morning.

.SHORT TERM...
325 AM CDT

Through Monday...

Currently, a surface low pressure system is located in northern Ohio
with an associated area of light to moderate rain stretching from
Michigan to northern Indiana. A second system is located along the
Minnesota/Iowa border, embedded within broad cyclonic flow across
much of the Great Lakes. Locally, we are in between both systems
with broken mid- to upper-level cloud cover and even a few pockets
of shallow fog.

Today will start dry as low-level clouds increase in advance of the
aforementioned second system. Perhaps as early as late morning but
certainly by early afternoon, widely scattered showers are expected
to develop initially along the developing lake breeze and weak cold
front across western Illinois. With meager lapse rates, relatively
low equilibrium levels, and little to no shear in the cloud-bearing
layer, all activity should be of the "pulse" variety with relatively
short individual cell lifespans, low potential for a lightning
strike or two, and gusty water-loaded downdrafts as cells collapse.
Efficient rain rates may nevertheless lead to heavy downpours which,
should a neighborhood get hit by several individual cells, may lead
to localized rain totals in excess of an inch. In between the
showers, highs should climb to the upper 70s to around 80 this
afternoon.

With broad upper-level troughing remaining overhead and an incoming
low-level airmass characterized by 850 mb temperatures in the +6 to
+8 C range, a compact low pressure system / mesoscale convective
vortex will likely develop over the warm waters of Lake Michigan
sometime Sunday night into early Monday. As such, shower chances
will linger through the overnight period with highest coverage near
the lakeshore. Early Monday, the low will finally start to pull
away (eastward?) allowing a secondary cold front to surge
southward down Lake Michigan. As diurnal instability increases, a
concentrated zone of showers and a few thunderstorms will likely
develop along the front and surge southward across northern
Illinois by mid-afternoon. With plentiful sources of low-level
vorticity (baroclinic generation along lakeshore, lake-instability
driven mesovortices, etc) and steepening low-level lapse rates,
we'll have to once again keep an eye out for funnel and perhaps
even brief landspout potential Monday near the intersection of the
cold front and land/lake interface.

.LONG TERM...
325 AM CDT

Monday night through Saturday...

The core of strongest 925-950 mb winds is expected to barrel down
the lake at the start of the long term period on Monday evening.
Deterministic model guidance continues to suggest wind speeds
increasing to around 25 to 30 kts in this layer, and with 850 mb
temperatures falling below 8-9 C, things look sufficiently unstable
across the lake to mix a good proportion of this to the surface.
This will result in a rather long duration of unusually high wave
action for early August likely persisting into Wednesday with a
threat for rip currents and even some minor lakeshore flooding. More
on these threats outlined in the marine section below.

We'll hold onto some low (20%) PoPs into Tuesday downwind of the
lake as 850 mb temperatures continue to cool towards +6 to +7 C
which is certainly getting towards the 10th-25th percentile for this
time of year. Tanking inversion heights to under 750 mb, however,
combined with at least some degree of upwelling owing to the strong
and gusty north winds should limit the degree of instability we're
able to realize into Tuesday. That said, the parameter space looks
sufficient for perhaps some spotty lake-effect showers and increased
cloud cover, with some guidance indicating a rather sharp PV anomaly
carving down the backside of the departing trough axis.

Tuesday night is looking like the coolest of the upcoming stretch
here as surface winds finally start to fall off--especially west
towards I-39--as high pressure begins to slide eastward. Current
indications are that clearing skies and light winds could allow
overnight temperatures to dip into the mid-upper 40s in some of our
far outlying locales. Thereafter, we'll start a gradual warming
trend through the rest of the week as we start to the lose the
persistent north to northeasterly winds. There remains a muted
signal in the mid range guidance indicating a series of northwest-
flow disturbances getting close to the region towards Thursday
afternoon and Friday, but ensemble guidance remains considerably
more muted in this regard. For now, didn't stray far from the
offered blended guidance, although did try to limit the amount of
thunder wording into Friday night given what appears to be an
overall dearth of instability/moisture return.

.AVIATION...
For the 06Z TAFs...

Several aviation weather points of note with forecast confidence
overall degrading later this afternoon and evening.

Low pressure is slowly pulling away late this evening, but noting
some additional shower activity developing in a subtle/weak
surface convergent axis near a UGN-DPA-C09 line. Will keep VCSH
and -RA mentions going for a little bit yet at ORD, MDW, and GYY
as a result, with GYY likely to continue seeing mainly VFR -RA
through about 09-10z or so. Can't rule out some filaments of MVFR
stratus trying to develop off the lake but probabilities here look
pretty low.

As precipitation comes to an end, winds should mainly favor light
and variable the rest of the night with more of a light westerly
push develop through Sunday morning. The wind forecast this
afternoon and evening is overall of lower than normal confidence,
as mesoscale details such as potential convection developing along
the lake breeze could speed or slow things down, and there also
isn't a clear signal regarding FROPA timing Sunday night. For now,
have elected to not make any big changes to the inherited 00z TAFs
for these reasons, with the 20-01z timeframe still looking
appropriate for shower and thunderstorm chances (with a
strong/gusty wind potential). Best guess is for a northeast wind
shift due to the lake breeze/colliding outflows towards 20z at
ORD, MDW, and GYY.

Into the extended TAF period, showers may end up festering within
the c90 airspace through the evening hours, thus the rather long
VCSH mention, with it possible additional -shra mentions being
added in future TAF issuances. MVFR cigs look to accompany the
incoming front into Monday morning.

Confidence in a rather prolonged period of strong and gusty north
winds in the wake of a cold front continues to steadily increase
with winds expected to ramp up most notably towards later Monday
afternoon and evening. Northerly winds gusting to 25 to 30 kt are
expected to build waves into the 6 to 9 foot range (potentially even
a bit higher given the fetch almost entirely down the long axis of
the lake). The largest waves are expected roughly late Monday
afternoon and through daybreak on Tuesday, but lingering gusty north
to northeasterly winds will keep wave action elevated potentially
through Wednesday morning.

The large waves will lead to dangerous swimming conditions
developing as early as mid evening tonight and likely lasting
through at least Tuesday Night, and potentially through Wednesday
morning. Have elected to hoist a long-duration Beach Hazards
statement starting late tonight and early Monday morning as a result
with it plausible things even need to get extended further through
Wednesday.

Minor flooding of parks and trails along the lakeshore is possible
Monday evening into Tuesday morning, as well. (Note that 6 to 7 foot
waves flooded parts of the Chicago lakeshore trail on 7/30). Current
surge modeling still only advertises up to about 1/2 foot of surge
with this event which may help curtail overall impacts, but impacts
to Lakeshore Flood Advisory levels are looking increasingly
likely. We've opted to hold off on issuing any products for this
for the time being given the highest waves not expected until
Monday evening/overnight to let the dayshift reassess this
potential.

Finally, as a pocket of seasonable cool low-level air (bottom 10% of
850 mb temperature climatology per SPC) streams over Lake Michigan,
a few waterspouts may develop in zones of enhanced low- level
confluence on Monday.
