Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 210 AM PDT Tue Sep 8 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Winds will still be gusty today behind a cold front and cooler air will continue to spill in from the north. This system will also bring some snow to eastern Nevada this morning. Temperatures will be generally in the 30s at daybreak then plummet to freezing or below by Wednesday morning across much of the area. Oh, and temperatures could be back up to near 90 degrees by the weekend. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday evening. Hard to say how clear the skies are because of the haze, smoke, and dust. There is a lot of windy areas along the trough axis now moving through Humboldt and Elko Counties. Hazy conditions were pushed a little further south earlier on Monday but are now converging along the leading edge of the frontal boundary. Dust began pouring into Humboldt County late last evening along the trough axis then high winds occurred at two sites in northern Humboldt County. Visibility is alreaday below P6SM at KWMC and is intermittently reduced at KEKO. Model agreement and consistency is good although the current low pressure system has gained strength. Today. Low pressure will move southeastward through Utah. The precipitation field has expanded to lend the possibility of some snow anywhere east of the Ruby Mountains. Light accumulations could occur this morning but temperatures will rebound into the 50s. The persistent north wind will make it feel not so 50ish. Winds will flirt with advisory levels all day. High temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. Tonight through Wednesday. Dry conditions will return. Low pressure will meander around southeast Utah. A substantial cool- down is expected as the winds subside under a continuous northerly flow. A hard freeze is expected across much of eastern Nevada. Low temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s. High temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. .LONG TERM...Wednesday night through next Monday. Cool north to northeasterly flow Wednesday night as the upper level low that brought strong winds and colder temperatures to NV lingers to our east...over eastern Utah and western Colorado. Most valley locations across northeastern and east-central NV will see temperatures late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in the mid 20s to mid 30s. Dry on Thursday with highs near normal in most locations. The upper level low over UT/CO Thursday will eject to the NE Thursday night into Friday resulting in more warming over NV as high pressure builds in from the west. Dry with continued warming through the rest of the week, with highs over the weekend generally in the upper 80s to low 90s in most valley locations. The north to northeasterly winds should scour out most of the smoke across the CWA, with little to no smoke through at least Friday. As the high pressure builds in this weekend light westerly winds may begin to spread smoke from CA wildfires into our region. && AVIATION...Overnight into Tuesday morning windy and much cooler. MVFR Visibilities initial caused by smoke ahead of, and along the front, have transitioned to areas of blowing dust/ash in strong post- frontal north winds downwind of dry lake beds and old large burn scars (Martin Fire in northwestern Elko County). General VFR will return across the region through the morning. North to northeast winds Tuesday afternoon still gusting AOA 30 kts at KELY and KTPH, while beginning to pull back at KWMC, KBAM, KEKO. && .FIRE WEATHER...A cold front is passing through NV bringing cooler conditions and higher RH along with strong gusty winds. There could be some light accumulatons of snow in the valleys east of the Ruby Mountains. Winds will less intense today across much of the area before abating this afternoon and evening.
