What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Elko, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Sep 6, 2:07 PM PDT, 32 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Sep 6, 2:07 PM PDT, 32 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
207 PM PDT Sun Sep 6 2020

.SYNOPSIS...Smoke and haze has made its way into our region
again, but a shift in the wind direction from Monday evening’s
cold front should help clear it out. Temperatures cool down on
Tuesday, approximately 20 to 25 degrees cooler than the previous
day, but high pressure returns shortly after and temperatures
rebound by the end of the week.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday
High pressure will continue to linger in the area through the
first part of Monday then it will be supplanted by a low pressure
system and its associated cold front late Monday and Tuesday. The
lingering high pressure will lead to hot temperatures for the
rest of today and early Monday. However those temperatures will be
tempered by the abundant smoke in the region which is
depreciating the solar heating. The smoke is also causing drastic
visibility reductions across northern NV which is impacting major
roads such as I-80, Hwy 95 and 93. Ahead of the cold fronts
arrival strong gusty winds will occur across NV with Monday
afternoon and evening seeing the strongest winds. The gusty winds
will continue after the cold fronts passage through Tuesday but at
a weaker speed compared to Monday. The passage of the cold front
will help to scour out the smoke in the region improving air
quality and visibilities. Temperatures will plummet on Tuesday as
cold air moves in mass through the region with highs in the 60s
and 70s. Lows will drastically drop as well with areas going below
freezing as early as Tuesday morning. Beyond the wind and
temperature change the front may cause a few isolated showers but
this should result in little to no actual precipitation.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday night through Sunday

Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, the closed low embedded
in the trough sinks down into the four corners region. North/northeasterly
flow aloft should continue to hold strong, so winds during the day
on Wednesday may be on the breezy side. We’ll sit in between the
amplified ridge and trough for a moment before the low pressure
system lifts northeasterly. This gives the Pacific ridge a chance to
collapse into our region through the rest of the week, and allows
for temperatures to rebound back into the 80s and 90s.

There are some minor indications that the pattern may change early
next week, but we only mention that as our way of saying that this
“high and dry” pattern we seem to have been stuck in won’t
last forever.

&&

.AVIATION...Generally VFR conditions, however haze from smoke has
the possibility of lowering visibility to MVFR and even to IFR
conditions for today and Monday. Gusty winds will occur at all
terminals today but more prominently on Monday with gusts in the
30's kt range. Visibilities will improve late Monday as the smoke
and haze is scoured out of the region by the winds.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Hot and Dry conditions will continue through the
first portions of Monday before a cold front moves through the
region. RH values will remain low with single to low tens ahead
of cold front. Winds ahead of and behind the cold front will be
strongest on Monday and a bit weaker for Tuesday. The winds
coupled with low RH will create critical fire weather conditions
as such a Red Flag Warning is now in effect for all fire zones for
Monday morning to Tuesday morning. The winds will remain gusty for
Tuesday but will have weakened to be below critical thresholds.
The colder air associated with the cold front will cause RH values
to increase Monday night and by Tuesday morning bringing them out
of critical levels. The cold front will generally be dry however
there may be a dusting of snow across eastern Nevada Tuesday
morning when snow levels dip to the valley floors. Even if there
is precipitation it will result in no meaningful accumulations.
