Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 823 AM PDT Tue Jul 21 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across NV for the next several days. Some stronger storms can form both Tuesday and Wednesday leading to strong gusty outflow winds. Tuesday and Wednesday will be critical fire weather days from the dry lightning and the strong gusty outflows. Drier weather should then gradually return to NV by the end of the week. && .FIRE WEATHER UPDATE...Will be doing some freshening up of the products and hazards for fire weather for the upcoming two days. No changes in headlines will be made at this time. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED AT 205 AM / SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening. The thunderstorms should get extra forcing from a MCV feature that will translate across central NV. The forecasted atmospheric profile is favorable that a few stronger storms can form today. The storms will be a mix of dry and wet with the wet portion expected mainly in the core of the storm. Strong gusty outflows are possible with these storms as the atmosphere is sporting a classic dry micro-burst characteristics. Wednesday will also be an active weather day with further scattered showers and thunderstorms. These will behave just like that of Tuesday with similar threat. The biggest difference is that Wednesday is looking to a greater chance for stronger storms. Both Tuesday and Wednesday are critical fire weather days due to the low RH, strong gusty outflows, and scattered thunderstorms. Ambient winds will remain rather light and influenced by terrain today before gusty outflow winds develop in the afternoon. Stronger south-southwest winds are expected across central Nevada Wednesday as a drier air mass begins to infiltrate into southern and central parts of the state, essentially eroding convection from south to north. Temperatures will continue to be hot with mid to upper 90s for Tuesday. Wednesday should see some cooling due to the greater cloud cover but highs will still be in the upper 80s to the low to mid 90s. LONG TERM...Thursday through next Monday. Upper low circulation moves across Nevada on Thursday before departing. Deeper monsoonal moisture stays east of Nevada through the weekend, but some moisture and conditional instability lingers across northern Elko County for a few storms and brief showers each day through the weekend. Overall trend has the threat of diurnal storms diminishing with each passing day. Weak trough along the West Coast keeps the flow aloft WSW over Nevada, keeping the monsoon east of the region. Temperatures stay steady but remaining a little above average for late July, the warmest time of the year. AVIATION...Although VFR conditions are expected to hold at KWMC KBAM KEKO KELY and KTPH, thunderstorms may affect all TAF sites this afternoon and evening. FIRE WEATHER...Red Flag conditions are expected in NV on Tuesday and Wednesday. This is mainly from dry thunderstorms with possible wet cores associated with a broad monsoonal push into the region. Tuesday should see the bulk of the thunderstorms concentrated in central NV south of I-80. Wednesday should see more wide spread thunderstorms with the bulk of the activity in northern NV. Both days are very favorable for the thunderstorms to produce strong gusty outflows. The winds produced from the events can reach and surpass 50 mph. In addition, stronger south to southwest winds and lowering humidity across central Nevada Wednesday will elevate fire weather conditions and potentially affect new fire starts that could occur Tuesday across this part of the state. Thunderstorms activity will wane during the second half of the week with isolated dry thunderstorms still being possible.
