Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 114 PM CDT Fri Oct 23 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday) Issued at 424 AM CDT Fri Oct 23 2020 Light snow continues to move east across western and north central Nebraska early this morning. Snow totals are expected to be less than an inch with some minimal accumulations on roadways. After this band moves out of the area, skies will become partly cloudy as high pressure builds over Nebraska. High temperatures will be on the 30s during the afternoon with low temperatures in the low 20s and upper teens overnight. On Saturday, a positively tilted longwave trough will strengthen over the Rocky Mountains and move east over the Northern Great Plains. At h250 an upper level jet will help enhance lift over Nebraska. These factors will trigger the next major precipitation event, which is expected to be low intensity and long duration snow event. The dendritic growth zone will develop over the Sandhills late Saturday, then move south thereafter. Precipitation will begin as rain on Saturday afternoon in the northern Sandhills then transition to light snow as temperatures decrease later in the afternoon. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 424 AM CDT Fri Oct 23 2020 On Saturday night, snowfall will continue to move south covering all of western and north central Nebraska. The snowfall will last through Sunday evening. Ensemble data suggests that most areas will receive between 4 and 7 inches of snow by Monday morning. ECMWF generally trended towards lower amounts, while the GFS trended towards higher amounts. WPC accumulation predictions show one heavy band of snowfall on north central Nebraska around Valentine and O'Neill, and a second band in southwest Nebraska around Imperial. Both of these areas are forecast to have around 6 inches of snow. Areas in between, including North Platte, could see between 4 and 6 inches. Given some model uncertainities, a winter storm watch was issued from Saturday night through Sunday night due to snowfall potential. Along with snowfall, gusty winds are expected on Sunday, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour and sustained wind speeds between 10 and 20 miles per hour. These winds pose two hazards; blowing snow and extremely cold apparent temperatures. Blowing snow will reduce visibility and make travel dangerous. Already low temperatures combined with the winds will create low apparent temperatures on Sunday, which will be in the single digits during the day and between -10 and zero by Monday morning. On Monday, surface high pressure will begin to build over the Great Plains again, leading to quieter weather.
