.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)

The main forecast challenge revolves around a developing winter
storm progged to affect the forecast area beginning Friday morning.
In the meantime, cooler conditions are in store today behind a
strong cold front, along with a few snow showers in the panhandle.

Today... Continued chc PoP for NW Neb through the early afternoon.
The greatest forcing for precip stems from terrain effects (Black
Hills and Pine Ridge) along with H5-7 fgen. RAP forecast soundings
suggest a limited window for saturation sfc-H5 and generally weak
lift overall. Any shower activity should be scattered in coverage
and light in intensity. Thermal profiles indicate rain switching to
snow, then possibly back to rain as activity decreases. Sfc temps as
of 08z are near 40F at KCDR, KIEN, and KGRN, so near term solutions
appear to be on point. Not expecting much impact from snow that does
fall due to somewhat limited moisture and low SLR's (11:1 at most).
Outside the precip chances, most of the forecast area will
experience blustery northwest winds and much cooler temps compared
to yesterday. H85 temps will fall up to 4C throughout the day, to as
low as -2C under steady northerly flow. Nudged max temps down a
degree or so due to strong CAA and mixed cloudiness. Highs range
from lower 40s far NW to lower 50s far SW. Forecast soundings
suggest wind gusts to 30 kts as the mixed layer deepens and a PV
anomaly approaches the Sandhills. Surface pressure rises may also
approach 2mb/hr in the wake of the front.

Tonight... The dynamics of the winter storm start to come together.
Strong moisture advection up the High Plains commences as the
surface high pressure slides east toward the Great Lakes. This
trajectory results in upslope as well as broad isentropic upglide.
Mid-level forcing and moisture advection are aided by the closed low
nearing the Four Corners with southwest flow tapping into the
Pacific. Initially, the best moisture arrives around H7 and plenty
of dry air remains in the low levels. Thinking the area should
remain dry through sunrise Friday. Early in the night, a period of
mostly clear sky and light winds will allow temps to drop quickly.
Blended in some cooler guidance for min temps, which range from
around 20F along the Pine Ridge to mid 20s far SW.

Friday... Precip gets going in southwest Neb and spreads northeast
through the day with the help of strengthening isentropic upglide
and moisture advection. NAEFS ensembles indicate water vapor
transport near the 99th %ile of climo. Potential exists for
widespread 0.10"-0.25" of liquid by late afternoon. P-type is a
little trickier to figure out. Steady southeast H85 flow will keep
temps relatively warm around -1C and high temps will reach the upper
30s SW Neb. Soundings show deep saturation, but much of it below the
DGZ. Most likely scenario points toward early Fri morning snow,
mixing with rain toward lunchtime, then back to snow around supper.
In the western Sandhills and areas of higher terrain, wet snowflakes
may be the primary type throughout the afternoon. Lift continues to
intensify, which would increase precip rate, but SLR's are low (9:1)
to counteract quick snow accumulation potential. However, if sfc
temps are a couple degrees cooler, could be looking at more
widespread wet snow during the day.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)

The primary snow event should impact the forecast area Friday
evening through Saturday early afternoon. With sfc temps cooling
into the 20s and a nearly isothermal profile around -10C in the mid
levels, SLR's slightly increase to around 11-12:1, but snow remains
the wet and heavy variety. Bouts of stronger forcing below H7 may
result in bursts of heavier snow embedded in the broad area of light
snow. The overall snowfall accumulation forecast changed little in
the west compared to previous forecast, but increased in central
Neb. Could look at a wide swath of 4-6" and expanded the Winter
Storm Watch to include Loup and Garfield counties. One concern with
this system is a southeast trend, especially as the closed low gets
absorbed into main southwest flow aloft and the trough becoming
positively-tilted. A similar setup but with more limited moisture
comes into play early next week, primarily Monday into Tuesday.
Trends are decreasing for snow accumulation, but still something to
watch.

VFR conditions will prevail through Friday morning across the
region with SCT to BKN mostly mid and high level clouds. Gusty
north winds this afternoon will decrease this evening and become
light overnight. Tomorrow afternoon conditions will deteriorate
with MVFR and precipitation developing.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and
north central Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT.

Hazardous weather is not expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

Rain will switch to snow Friday afternoon through Saturday
morning. Portions of the southern Sandhills and central Nebraska,
along and north of Interstate 80, have the greatest potential for
6 inches or more of snow accumulation. This will be a fairly wet
snow, which should limit the overall threat of blowing and
drifting. Stay tuned for further updates regarding snowfall
amounts.

Additional snow chances continue through middle of the week. The
over all accumulation potential is low at this time.
