Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 346 PM CDT Sun Jul 5 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday night) Issued at 345 PM CDT Sun Jul 5 2020 A cold front moving across the northern Plains will help to initiate thunderstorms across North Dakota this evening. Storms are expected to slowly move southward through the evening. However, current observations as well as model forecasts indicate plenty of dry air, sufficient CIN (greater than 60 J/kg), and a well mixed boundary layer across much of north central Nebraska. As storms encounter this environment, they will struggle to survive and are expected to dissipate. Best chance for any locations to see thunderstorms will be across the eastern Panhandle and Pine Ridge region where slightly better instability exists. Here, storms may be capable of producing brief gusty winds and large hail, however, storms are anticipated to be short lived. Dry weather returns for the remainder of tonight and into Monday morning before another round of thunderstorms are possible late Monday afternoon through the evening. The cold front will continue to be located across North Dakota and will slowly move into northern Nebraska. Better moisture and instability will be present across the region for Monday evening (compared to tonight) which will help to support strong to isolated severe storms. Best locations to see thunderstorms will be north of Highway 2. There is still plenty of uncertainty in where thunderstorms will develop and how strong and widespread they will be. Will keep the low chance pops (near 30%) for now through the end of the week. As we get a better handle on the environment heading into next week adjustments will likely be made to precipitation potential. Plenty of warm air advection into the region will keep surface temperatures in the 90s through the end of next week.
