Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 330 AM EST Mon Dec 28 2020 .DISCUSSION... Currently, a recent ASCAT pass found winds in the eastern most Florida Straits to be in excess of 20 knots, which precipitated a short term Small Craft Advisory for the Florida Straits waters. The higher winds were on the order of 5 knots or so higher that all available guidance. However, it is still anticipated that winds will slowly decrease towards daybreak. Over the Straits, low topped isolated showers have persisted through the early morning hours, with a few light showers clipping the upper and middle Keys before dissipating. This is most likely due to nocturnal marine boundary layer instability over the warm Gulf Stream waters. These showers should decrease after daybreak, but there is still a chance of a shower moving across one of the islands during the morning hours, so slight chance pops will be maintained for mainly the hours before noon. Over the next several days a deep anticyclone will move over the eastern CONUS, which will build into the Florida Keys area. This will result in a prolonged period of fresh to strong winds, veering from northeast to southeast today through Thursday. This may require Advisories over the coastal waters through most of this period. By Friday, winds will finally begin to relax somewhat through Saturday in response to a high amplitude trough digging into the central states and pushing the ridge farther offshore. As the trough progresses eastward, a cold front crosses the Gulf and pushes through the Keys possibly on Sunday. && .MARINE... Moderate to fresh northeast breezes will prevail over the waters of Hawk Channel and the Florida Straits through today. Over the Straits, small craft should exercise caution due to winds between 15 and 20 knots. On Florida Bay, and the Bayside and Gulf waters, moderate northeast breezes can be expected. Beginning tonight and Tuesday morning, high pressure building into the Florida Keys coastal waters will increase winds to fresh to strong, clocking from northeast to southeast Tuesday through Thursday night. It is likely that a Small Craft Advisory be required through this period, certainly for the Straits and Hawk Channel, and possibly for the Bayside and Gulf waters at times. && .AVIATION... Until 00z/29th, Ceilings of around 050-060 will predominate at the Key West and Marathon terminals, but stratocumulus should become scattered during today.
