Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 356 PM EDT Sun Sep 20 2020 .DISCUSSION... For the first time in days, we have a solid cloud line over the Lower Keys. Some communities have already accumulated three inches of rainfall and it is still raining. Visibile satellite imagery highlights a collapsing col-region over the western half of the Florida Keys. The MCV moving west near Sarasota has allowed some northwesterlies to develop over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, helping the col-region to converge across the Keys. The 18Z KKEY RAOB sampled 2.0" of PW and an inversion near 700 mb which was not there this morning. Temperatures across the island chain broke 90 in most locations with dewpoints in the upper 70s. Breezes are light and variable. .FORECAST... The main weather story will be the frontal passage on Monday, which will bring strong northeast to east breezes, well above normal rain chances (70%) Monday and Monday night, and a slight cool-off on Tuesday. The timing for this front has been challenging, with delay after delay. A few days ago it was supposed to push through tonight, whereas now it is not expected until Monday evening. Once the breezes start, they will really crank up, with BL winds increasing to 26-28 knots. Given the boiling late summer waters and the weak cold air advection, SFC winds should get all of the BL magnitudes. Dewpoints on Tuesday should fall into the upper 60s for many locations, noting that the boisterous breezes, clearing skies, and steep BL lapse rates should mix down some of the drier air 1 to 2 kft off the SFC. Drier weather is expected Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, followed by a tropical moisture surge Thursday through Friday. && .MARINE... Small Craft Advisory in effect for the eastern Straits of Florida for seas building to 7 to 8 feet, due to north swell. Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected by Monday night for all coastal waters of the Florida Keys due to increasing northeast to east winds near 25 knots. Advisories may persist into Tuesday night for portions of the coastal waters of the Florida Keys. A weak pressure pattern will continue across the Keys coastal waters this evening, with light and variable breezes prevailing. Northeast breezes will begin to freshen late tonight, then continue to increase on Monday, with strong northeast to east breezes expected Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Fresh easterly breezes will linger Tuesday night, then moderate to occasionally fresh breezes will peak and lull from Wednesday through Thursday. Diminished southeasterly breezes are possible Friday and Friday night. && .AVIATION... VFR and light/variable breezes will prevail at the EYW and MTH terminals this evening. The Lower Keys cloud line is just east of EYW, and may back build towards the terminal. Waterspouts tend to form beneath lines of building cumulus clouds, just at the hint of rain. Waterspouts can easily flip boats, and should be avoided always. Minor saltwater flooding of low elevation streets and lots is likely to continue across Bayside communities of the Upper Keys and parts of the Middle Keys today. Isolated thunderstorms will be possible along the Florida Keys and surrounding coastal waters today, with scattered thunderstorms possible tonight. The primary thunderstorm hazards will be cloud to surface lightning strikes and locally gusty winds. Small Craft Advisories will likely be required for the eastern Straits of Florida tonight, due to building north swell. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY Scattered thunderstorms will be possible Monday through Tuesday morning, then again Thursday through Saturday.
