Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 300 PM EDT Mon May 11 2020 .DISCUSSION... The trough complex which contributed to the unsettled weather Saturday night and Sunday has shifted east, hence the improving weather across the Florida Keys. Water vapor imagery highlights the dry air on the back- side of the trough axis sliding east through the Gulf of Mexico. At the surface, high pressure spilling south through the Plains, in conjunction with a stalled boundary laying across Cuba, maintains moderate northeasterly breezes across the islands. Temperatures are near 80 with dewpoints in the lower 70s. The KBYX radar detects a thin line of showers across the Straits of Florida. .FORECAST... The forecast over the next seven days hinges upon the stalled boundary over Cuba. Breezes will freshen this evening as the high over the Plains spills quickly to the southeast, tightening the gradient across South Florida and the Keys. Drier air in the lower levels will limit rain chances to slight along the islands, although the Straits may try to reinvigorate this evening as an impulse over west-central Cuba slides northeast. Fresh to strong northeast to east breezes are expected Tuesday through Thursday night, in tandem with deepening lower tropospheric moisture. By Thursday night or Friday, the festering boundary to our southeast will sharpen into an inverted trough over the Bahamas, all linked to a southern stream shortwave sliding east through the Gulf of Mexico. The ensemble solution slides this sheared system to the northeast this weekend, allowing breezes to diminish across the Keys and cutting off the maritime tropical moisture tap. Nevertheless, and despite the development over the Bahamas, northeast to east winds 20 to 25 knots or higher will result in sloppy marine conditions this week. Also, fast moving showers and storms will result in high rain chances for much of the Keys, especially Wednesday through Friday. Our forecast is very similar to the previous forecast, aside from slight increases in wind magnitudes. && .MARINE... Small Craft Advisory in effect for all coastal waters of the Florida Keys due to northeast to east winds increasing to near 20 knots. From synopsis, northeast to east breezes will freshen tonight and Tuesday as a large surface high moves east through the Tennessee Valley. High pressure will move eastward into the Atlantic Wednesday through Thursday, with strong easterly breezes persisting over the Keys waters. Breezes will begin to diminish on Friday or Friday night. Light to gentle breezes are possible by Saturday. && .AVIATION... NE winds will range from 9 to 12 knots sustained, with frequent gusts between 16 to 20 knots. VCSH is possible for MTH around 20Z and EYW around 23Z as model guidance indicates possible showers developing in Florida Bay and moving SW that could affect either or both terminals this evening.
