Otherwise, temperatures by Friday will rise to well above normal and remain there through next week. .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Saturday night) A high pressure center over Georgia this afternoon will move east into the Atlantic on Thursday, strengthening and expanding its pressure field along the way. By the time the high center reaches north of Bermuda on Friday, it will have attained a lofty pressure of 1042 mb. This feature will be the major driver of our sensible weather for the next week. As the Keys come under the southern then southwestern periphery of this strengthening feature tonight, winds will gradually become more easterly and increase in speed. Winds will exhibit a prolonged peak from Thursday through early Saturday, with occasional land-based wind gusts near 30 mph appear likely. Winds will ease some late Saturday as a dissipating cold front gives up over the Central Gulf. That front will never make it to the southeast Gulf. Regarding moisture and showers, strong easterlies will quickly advect a moister air mass across the Keys tonight through Thursday evening, causing PW values and surface dewpoints to spike. Strong moisture advection often comes with a surge of showers. Showers are all the more plausible considering some weak low-level warm advection lift as we push out the remnants of the currently existing cooler and drier air mass. Showers will peak with scattered coverage on Thursday night, concurrent with peak wind speeds and moisture flux. Isolated showers will continue on Friday and Saturday as favorable east-southeast flow brings low-topped showers from the Straits up to the Keys. Showers in east-southeast flow tend to dissipate over cooler Gulfside waters in the winter. && .LONG TERM...(Sunday through next Wednesday) A blocking pattern over North America and the western Atlantic will prevent much day-to-day variability in sensible weather over the Florida Keys. At the surface, a diminished high pressure ridge will persist from near Bermuda to North Florida or Georgia. The resulting fresh east-southeast breezes over the Keys will continually renew the warm, muggy maritime tropical air mass. This will keep temperatures well above January normals, closer to values that are normal for early May and late October. Meanwhile at 500 mb, a very strong ridge will at first stretch from the Bahamas to Bermuda, then slowly retrograde westward during the extended period to span east-west across South Florida and the Bahamas. A prolonged period of subsidence under this persistent feature and retrogression of the mid-level high more directly over the region will take its toll on shower chances. PW values will gradually fall off to near 1", and the capping subsidence inversion will stunt convective development, thereby keeping showers weak, low-topped, and isolated in coverage. Rain chances will run close to dry season climo values, or about 10 percent each 12-hour period. && .MARINE... A Small Craft Advisory will soon be issued for all waters. Winds will start ramping up this evening as part of the long- advertised period of strong to near-gale breezes that will be underway from Thursday through early Saturday. A high pressure center over Georgia this afternoon will move off the U.S. Mid- Atlantic coast on Thursday morning, becoming very strong as it moves to north of Bermuda on Friday. The Keys will come under the windy periphery of this large and expansive high pressure area tonight, bringing an extended period of strong to near-gale easterly breezes through Saturday. The high center will ease in strength on Sunday and Monday while extending a ridge westward toward North Florida. && .AVIATION... NE winds will increase and gradually veer to the ENE tonight, bringing strato-cumulus from the Straits across the island terminals. A few weak and fast-moving showers could skirt the terminals starting later this evening. VFR conditions will prevail at both terminals, despite the development of cigs in the FL030-040 range. && .CLIMATE... This fall and winter, the Key West Airport has still not fallen below 60 degrees. Over the next 2 weeks, the forecast of above normal temperatures will prevent any such occurrences. By February, cool air masses typically reach the Keys with decreasing frequency.
