Cloudiness and shower activity over land areas continued to diminish and dissipate during the evening hours, leaving variably cloudy to partly cloudy skies with light to moderate showers mainly along the north and south coastal areas. No significant changes to the inherited short term forecast and reasoning at this time. Still expect the low level winds to become more east to northeast by early morning with overnight and early morning passing showers to reach parts of the north and east coastal areas. Recent TJSJ upper air sounding was still fairly moist below 500 millibars with light east to northeast low level winds backing and increasing with height above 700 millibars. Recent model guidance continued to suggest a gradual drying trend beginning on Wednesday and continuing through the end of the work- week, as high pressure will build aloft and become the dominant weather feature. This will increase subsidence and stable conditions aloft, thus limiting convective development during the day. However, still expect lingering moisture along with local and diurnal effects to promote afternoon shower activity over parts of the islands on Wednesday. && .AVIATION UPDATE... No change to previous marine discussion. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 301 PM AST Tue Nov 24 2020/ SYNOPSIS... Today has been somewhat active, particularly across western Puerto Rico and the San Juan Metro area, due to a prefrontal trough moving across the area. However, drier air will begin to filter in tonight, and will result in much calmer weather for the rest of the week. Tomorrow there will still be some lingering moisture to produce showers. A swell is expected to impact the region beginning tomorrow night. SHORT TERM...Rest of Today through Thursday... A prefrontal trough is currently impacting the area, resulting in plenty of shower activity across the region this afternoon. Given the fairly slow winds at steering flow levels, these showers have stalled over several areas of Puerto Rico, resulting in decent rainfall accumulations for areas such as Cabo Rojo and Moca. With the trough lingering over us into the nighttime, expect showers to continue. Given generally northerly flow expected at low levels for the overnight hours, these showers will concentrate over the northern sections of Puerto Rico. Ponding of water over roadways and in low-lying areas are possible for the overnight hours. This prefrontal trough will be pulled apart over the next day or so, and substantially drier air will filter into the region over the next few days. The source of this dry air is high pressure moving off the U.S. east coast, with northerly flow to the east of the high pressure pushing dry air into our region. Thus, tomorrow will essentially be a transition day to drier condition through the rest of the week. The lingering moisture from the trough however will help to produce some shower activity, just less than what we are seeing today. Given expected low-level wind flow from the east-northeast, showers will likely converge over southwest Puerto Rico tomorrow afternoon. With very dry air already filtering in at mid and upper levels, thunderstorms will be unlikely for tomorrow. By Thursday, the atmosphere gets even drier. We will still be under east to northeasterly flow so showers will again converge over western and southwestern Puerto Rico in the afternoon, but they will likely be fairly weak, unimpactful, and eventually blown offshore by 15 knots steering flow winds. LONG TERM...Friday through Wednesday... PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 503 AM AST Tue Nov 24 2020/ A low pressure that cut-off from a passing long wave trough in the central Atlantic at upper levels will enhance a low pressure at mid and lower levels a few hundred miles west of the upper low or about 630 miles north northeast of Saint Martin. This and high pressure wedging into the western Atlantic from a high that moved into the central Atlantic will cause northeasterly flow at lower levels Friday and over the weekend. The boundary between the warm moist air from the tropics and this air will sink into the central part of the Caribbean such that cooler and drier air will dominate for the duration of the long term period. In fact, the GFS shows precipitable water values falling below 1.25 inches and not recovering before Tuesday night. Although some showers in the diurnal cycle typical for Puerto Rico may occur, they will be isolated and shallow. Thunderstorms are very unlikely in this environment and there should be a preponderance of sunshine each day. Although the air will be cooler, sunshine will keep maximum temperatures in the mid to upper 80s in the lower elevations of both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. AVIATION... SHRA and isold TS activity expected across interior, western, southwestern PR through 24/22z, resulting in VCSH across TJBQ and VCTS across TJPS. After 24/22z, Sct SHRA activity expected across northern PR, resulting in VCSH across TJBQ and TJSJ. This may result in MVFR conditions at times due to BKN ceilings and reduced visibilities if activity moves over the terminals. Winds of up to 10 kts from the ENE-NE across PR terminals and ESE across USVI and Leeward Island terminals through 24/22z, becoming light and variable overnight. MARINE... Seas are choppy in the outer Atlantic with wave heights at 4 to 6 feet, as seas continue to calm down from the last swell. However, seas are generally calmer in other locations and below 5 feet. Another swell is expected to move in tomorrow night that will lead to small craft advisory conditions once again for the outer Atlantic waters with choppy seas elsewhere.
