18Z TAF discussion:
MVFR to IFR flight categories will continue to persist at TAF
sites throughout the majority of the forecast period. This evening
and overnight, categories will become more IFR, to potentially
LIFR, as ceilings decrease further and scattered convection
increase across the region as a cold front slowly sinks through
the region. Across the Pine Belt region, fog is once again
expected to develop after midnight, again result in a decrease in
visibilities at KHBG and KPIB ahead of the front. Winds ahead of
the front will remain southwesterly between 5-10 knots. However,
they will become northwesterly and increase to between 10-15
knots, gusting between 20-25 knots, come mid-morning Thursday. /19/

.DISCUSSION...
With a warm front north of
the region, mild and muggy conditions will exist across the forecast
area today. Resulting isentropic lift across the front will continue
to result in ample cloud cover across the CWA. High temperatures
later this afternoon will range in the low and middle 70s.

Increasing westerly flow aloft this afternoon will combine with the
moisture rich airmass over the region.  This, in addition to a
subtle disturbance aloft passing north of the CWA, will help to
initiate scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across mainly
northern portions of the CWA during the afternoon hours.  Because of
the moisture laden airmass, some of this activity could produce some
heavy downpours.  This, in addition to already very saturated soils
conditions, could again result in some localized flash flooding
concerns later today.  Also, due to some increased instability and
deep-layer wind shear over the CWA later today, an isolated severe
storm cannot be ruled out.  Hail up to quarter size and a few
damaging wind gusts will be possible with such storms.  Currently,
the better potential for such activity resides in the vicinity of
the Highway 82 corridor.

The ongoing forecast remains in pretty good shape.  I'll make some
adjustments to accommodate current trends, in addition to removing
the mention of fog from southeastern and northwestern portions of
the CWA, as visibilities have improved there over the past couple of
hours.  Otherwise, no further changes will be made to the forecast
on this update. /19/

Main update was to expire the Dense Fog Advisory early as most
model consensus & trends in observations favored any dense fog to
remain off to our northwest outside the Delta. Kept a "Limited"
in the HWO & graphics for patchy dense fog in the Delta & the
southeast, including the Pine Belt & Interstate 59 corridor. /DC/

Today and tonight:

Today: This morning a warm front is stalled in the region with
isentropic ascent into the region. To the south of the warm front,
high low-level moisture is leading to widespread cloudiness. With
such anomalous rainfall yesterday & recent wet antecedent
conditions, there remains potential for some dense fog over the
northwest Delta & patchy dense fog around areas in the west & also
the southeast. Some LAPS analysis shows some surface pressure
gradient, which is keeping some winds around & mixing in some areas.
Due to that, potential looks less than earlier, but still some
possible, especially in the southeast where advection fog is
possible. Due to consensus of little-no fog & some wind, decided to
remove areas from the "Limited" in central-northeast Mississippi,
mainly along the Highway 25 corridor. Kept the Dense Fog Advisory in
the Delta through 9AM in case some advects in or winds can lighten,
but confidence is somewhat decreasing in coverage.

Into the afternoon, the high moisture laden air will combine with
westerly flow aloft & high Theta E (i.e. westerly Corfidi vectors
~10-20kts & 320-330K @ 850mb) for more potential for some locally
heavy rainfall. This looks to be possible into mid-afternoon across
the Highway 82 corridor & spreading south-southeast ahead of the
cold front drifting to the south. This will be less in coverage
compared to yesterday as more subtle isentropic lift will occur & no
clear shortwave trough energy will aid in development. Regardless,
with such impressive, record rainfall & saturated antecedent
conditions, areas can not handle much rain before flash flooding
issues could redevelop. There will also be potential for some
convection due to some instability & deep layer shear, so this could
only increase potential. Up to an inch is possible for areas along &
north of the Interstate 20 corridor, especially in any convection.
This will only exacerbate previous flooding issues & ongoing river
flooding, so introduced a "Limited" for flash flooding in the HWO,
mainly along & north of Interstate 20. Lastly, there is some severe
potential for marginally severe storms, mainly in the Highway 82
corridor late this afternoon through late evening. Some
destabilization in juxtaposition with westerly strong deep layer
shear will bring potential for a few strong to isolated severe
storms. Marginally severe hail & damaging winds look to be the main
threat, but this will be spatial coverage will be low enough to
preclude wider coverage. Added this "Marginal" severe threat in the
HWO for the Highway 82 corridor.

Tonight: As this fast moving clipper system moves into the Great
Lakes, this will help drive the front to the south through daybreak
tomorrow. Expect some of this convection to become more confined to
the low-level frontal convergence & shift to the south overnight.
Some hi-res CAM guidance indicates some redevelopment of some
elevated convection into the overnight hours, mainly before daybreak
across the Delta. Due to that, kept the mention of "Limited"
flooding into the overnight hours but most of the more intense
convection & rates will be prior to then. Winds will become gusty in
the Delta in the wake of the front, with some gusts upwards of
25mph+. We should cool off around 10+ degrees in the wake, but most
areas lows should remain above normal tonight. Some patchy fog is
again possible in the Pine Belt as well. /DC/

Tomorrow through Wednesday...There will be a couple more rounds of
rain before cold and dry air settles into the region next week.
Tomorrow-tomorrow night QPF amounts were less than a half inch.
Maintained thunder for Saturday with decent winds aloft there
could be some good downpours with so much moisture available. Will
hold off on adding flooding to the HWO for the weekend.

For Thursday, look for the stalled boundary to slowly shift south.
High pressure moving through the midwest will force the boundary
out of the area. Looking for light to moderate rain mainly during
the day and maybe lingering into the evening. A shortwave moves in
from the southwest with a surge of Pacific moisture. As the
system moves into the midwest a cold front sweep across the region
Late Friday into Late Saturday, where there could be some
downpours. Lapse rates weren't that great, but winds were around
50kts at 500 and 35-40 kts at 850, according to the GFS, so
maintained thunder as the boundary moves through the area. A weak
dry front, followed by a cold upper level shortwave pass early
next week. Looks like there won't be much precipitation, but would
interested to see if there any flurries in the northern zones. A
Canadian high squeezes into the region around Tuesday and may keep
the area dry through Thursday. It will be cold a few mornings with
values in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Winter returns briefly. Guidance
pops and temps were good. No real adjustments needed to the
extended.

            THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN JUST WEST OF DREW,
            MS. THE FIRST DAMAGE WAS NOTED ON SAVELL AND
            LOMBARDY ROADS WHERE IT KNOCKED DOWN TREES
            AND POWERLINES. THE TORNADO COMPLETELY
            DESTROYED A MOBILE HOME ON THARP RD, TOSSING
            ITS CONTENTS AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE. THE
            TORNADO CONTINUED NE, CROSSED US 49, AND
            LIFTED SOON THEREAFTER. PATH LENGTH - 5.52
            MILES. MAX WIDTH - 850 YARDS. MAX WINDS -
            125 MPH.

            THIS TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ON THE GROUNDS OF
            MISSISSIPPI STATE PENITENTIARY. IT CAUSED
            MINOR DAMAGE ON THE PENITENTIARY GROUNDS
            BEFORE TRACKING NE TOWARDS ROME, MS. THE
            TORNADO DAMAGED OR DESTROYED SEVERAL HOMES
            AND BUSINESSES IN ROME INCLUDING THE ROME
            POST OFFICE. IT ALSO SNAPPED SEVERAL WOOD
            POWER POLES ALONG US 49W. THE TORNADO IS
            EXPECTED TO HAVE LIFTED AS IT APPROACHED THE
            SUNFLOWER/TALLAHATCHIE/COAHOMA BORDER. PATH
            LENGTH - 5.53 MILES. MAX WIDTH - 2000 YARDS.
            MAX WINDS - 115 MPH.

            *** 4 INJ ***
            THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN BOLIVAR COUNTY
            NEAR THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THE TORNADO
            TRACKED NORTHEASTWARD AND DAMAGED HEAVY FARM
            EQUIPMENT AND DESTROYED A FARM EQUIPMENT
            SHELTER, RIPPING AND TOSSING ITS CONCRETE
            ANCHORS OVER 100 YARDS. THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL
            DAMAGE WAS NOTED AS THE TORNADO CROSSED HWY
            8 BETWEEN PACE AND CLEVELAND. IT DAMAGED
            SOME WELL BUILT HOMES AND SNAPPED SEVERAL
            CONCRETE POWER POLES. FOUR PEOPLE WERE
            INJURED IN DESTROYED MOBILE HOMES. THE
            TORNADO ALSO DAMAGED STEEL POWER TRUSSES AND
            A BUSINESS IN RENOVA. PATH LENGTH OF 23.43
            MILES. MAX WIDTH OF 2600 YARDS. MAX WIND OF
            134 MPH.

01/11/2020                   BOLIVAR            MS   NWS STORM SURVEY

            THIS TORNADO OCCURRED IN NORTHERN BOLIVAR
            COUNTY, NORTH OF MOUND BAYOU. THE TORNADO
            SNAPPED TREES AND POWERLINES ALONG OLD US-61
            BEFORE TRACKING NORTHWEST AND SNAPPING MORE
            TREES AND POWERLINES ON MOODY RD SOUTH OF
            WINSTONVILLE. PATH LENGTH OF 2.55 MILES. MAX
            WIDTH OF 270 YARDS. PEAK WINDS OF 110 MPH.
