Today and tonight...early morning surface analysis had an 1018mb
high stretched across northern Mississippi. This high will try to
remain dominant across our CWA through tonight as moisture begins to
slowly increase from the south. The 06Z Wed JAN sounding had a PWAT
of 0.84in up from 0.71 at 00Z. Models suggest PWATs will increase to
an inch and a half north to the Interstate 20 corridor by sunrise
Thursday. Despite this increase in moisture dry weather is expected
to continue through tonight. Temperatures today will again top out
warmer than normal in the mid 80s at most sites. There will be a few
more clouds around tonight especially over the south but the
increase in moisture is expected to hold morning lows above normal
ranging from the upper 50s north to near 70 south. /22/

Thursday through the weekend...

The main concern through this period will be the impacts to our
region from Hurricane Delta.

Rain chances will begin to increase across the region on Thursday
as tropical moisture increases over the region. Lift will be
provided by the way of a warm front lifting through the lower MS
River Valley out ahead of the approaching Delta. Heavy showers
will be possible throughout the day on Thursday and into Friday.
Although widespread flooding is not expected during this period
ahead of the approaching Delta, any heavy rain will play a role in
worsening the antecedent conditions prior to Delta's arrival.

The latest NHC forecast has Delta approaching the Gulf Coast of
Central Louisiana as a category 2 or 3 hurricane afternoon or
evening on Friday. Other than small deviations, spatial consistency
amongst guidance and official NHC forecasts has been solid. However,
when it comes to temporal consistencies amongst guidance, solutions
still tend to vary a bit. Due to increasing shear over the northern
Gulf, slower solutions favor a weaker Delta as it makes landfall,
with the opposite being true for faster solutions. Regardless,
confidence continues to increase that the ArkLaMiss will be impacted
by this storm as it makes its way inland.

We will see threats from Delta start to increase across our region
shortly after Delta makes landfall. Threats will include strong
winds, heavy rain, and tornadoes. At least tropical storm force
winds could be possible in the southwestern portions of our
region, closer to where Delta makes landfall. We will hold off on
issuing any tropical watch/warning products with this package, but
if the forecast remains unchanged over the next few issuances,
they will likely be added. However, we will make mention of
strong winds in our local HWO products.

As the center of Delta moves closer and subsequently through our
region, heavy rainfall is expected to lead to flash flooding.
The swath of heavy rain associated with the center of Delta is
expected to range from 6 to 10 inches as the storm marches north
through our region late Friday into Saturday. Most guidance places
this swath of heavy rain west of the I-55 corridor. We will start
messaging the heavy rain threat in the HWO this morning as well.

Also, as Delta makes landfall and tracks inland, it will bring
with it the risk of tornadoes east and northeast of the center.
The best chances for tornadic storms will exist in the SE portions
of our region on Friday night into Saturday morning. This has
been included in the local HWO.

Guidance continues to differ in regards to how quickly Delta will
exit the region. The latest GFS has the region dry by Sunday with
the Euro 12-18 hrs slower. /JPM/
