.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 301 AM EDT Fri Mar 27 2020

Risk for heavy rain could result in flooding or flash flooding
overnight into Saturday morning. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect
from Midnight tonight through 11 AM Saturday. A few strong to severe
storms are possible late tonight into Saturday morning.

All modes of severe weather are possible Saturday afternoon into
Saturday night including large hail, damaging wind gusts, and
possibly a few tornadoes. Strong winds are expected across the area
late Saturday night through Sunday. These winds will cause hazardous
conditions for small crafts on Lake Michigan and could result in
lakeshore flooding of near Lake Michigan counties.

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Saturday morning)
Issued at 150 PM EDT Fri Mar 27 2020

Increasing rain chances through the afternoon as warm front from
down state starts to move northwards, and a series of vort lobes
round the crest of of increasing heights over the Central Plains.
The overrunning pattern will allow for the return of PWATs pushing
daily max values back into the forecast area. Models show the warm
front stalling generally near IN Route 24 and Hwy 30. This
placement would focus the higher rain amounts in that area and
slightly north given forecast storm motions will be close to
parallel to the front. With that being said, there still exist
some variation in model placement of the front as it stalls. In
previous setups like this, precip falling on the cool side of the
front would help to strengthen the cool airmass and allow the
front to sag southwards after losing daytime heating. This creates
some complication as to where the heaviest rainfall will occur as
the initial precip may occur across the northern zones before
shifting southwards overnight. With that being said, will go with
a Flash Flood Watch for midnight tonight through Saturday morning
for northern Indiana and northwest Ohio counties along and south
of US Highway 6.

Heavy rain will not be the only hazard with this round of storms.
Elevated instability will be on the rise as the warm front lifts
into the area this evening and Saturday morning. This slow ramping
of elevated instability will likely be the limiting factor early
on as models show curved hodographs, allowing for storm
organization, throughout this timeframe. Models show MUCAPE
reaching into the 500 to 1500 J/kg range as early as 02z and
persisting through 15z Saturday. Given the elevated nature, large
hail is expected to be the primary hazard. There is also a brief
window for a damaging wind threat near sunrise given the
increased instability, deep layer shear, and a fairly shallow near
surface inversion.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday afternoon through Friday)
Issued at 332 PM EDT Fri Mar 27 2020

A relative minimum of convective activity is possible around
midday Saturday as the warm front stalls near Route 25. Recent
models trends show the front progression being much slower than
previously thought. Instead of the front moving into southern
Lower Michigan by 18z, as shown 24 hours ago, the front starts to
enter the area around 21z and reaches southern Lower Michigan
around 03z. It is possible that models are starting to latch onto
the impact of cool east winds coming off Lake Eerie, and the
above mentioned evaporative cooling from overrunning storms.

Regardless, the front will start to move into the area with
sufficient daytime heating remaining to allow instability to rise
towards 1500 J/kg as deep layer shear increases to 50 to 70kt,
and surface dewpoints in the lower to mid 60s advect northward in
the warm sector. Forecast soundings show nice veering of the winds
and curved hodographs that would support organized convection.
Models aren't showing significant development within the warm
sector during the early afternoon as significant storms develop
along the cold front across eastern IA/northeast MO. These long
lived storms are expected to be the focus of severe concerns going
into the late afternoon/evening hours as they progress eastwards
ahead of the cold front. With that being said, can't rule out a
discrete storm developing out ahead of these storms as they move
east. Models depict the IA/MO storms starting to move into the
western zones around 00z. These storms will have the potential to
bring all modes of severe weather, including a few tornadoes given
the favorable environment. Agree with the SPC Day 2 outlook that
the far western/southwestern counties would have the highest risk
for tornadoes and that as storms move further east they will be
encountering a gradually stabilizing environment. This wouldn't
rule out a continued severe risk across the eastern half of the
area, just a more narrow window for it to occur. Instability
significantly drops around 06z Sunday as the cold front moves in.

As storms move out of the area, all eyes turn to the strong winds
on the backside of the system. Models continue to show strong
winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts near 45 mph being possible. These
high winds will make conditions on Lake Michigan hazardous to
small crafts, and a Gale Watch has been issued. There is also
potential for lakeshore flooding. At this point, it does not
appear to warrant a Lakeshore Flood Warning as waves don't exceed
8ft. Will continue to monitor going forward. Winds diminish late
Sunday night.

Conditions turn quiet on Monday before another system could
affect the forecast area Tuesday/Wednesday. Due to high variation
with storm track and intensity will stick close to a blended

within retreating H7 baroclinic zone and of little consequence going
forward. New/recent development south through ern IL a reflection of
arriving deeper theta-e ridging/moisture flux developing on nose of
increasing LLJ back through cntrl IL and within maximizing H85-7
ascent zone as frontogenesis takes off eastward through evening.
Thus expect LIFR/IFR cat reductions going forward as waves of
shra/embedded tsra roll through the terminals into daybreak Sat.

Thereafter expect mid morning-mid aftn fairly quiet with some
improvement back to MVFR. However additional shra/thunder likely Sat
evening.

hail or strong wind gusts.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are also expected on Saturday and
Saturday night. The hazards associated with the storms include
hail, damaging wind gusts, and possibly a few tornadoes.  The
rainfall from these storms may cause flooding of poor drainage areas
and rises on area rivers and streams.

Strong winds are expected late Saturday night through Sunday. Wind
