.With rainfall totals between 1 to 1 and a half inches there are 
widespread flooding concerns across much of Indiana. Over the next 
couple of days we will see another 1 to 3 inches of rain or more 
possible.


Precautionary/Preparedness Actions...

Motorists should never drive into flood water. Turn around and go 
another way. Keep children away from flooded areas. Recreational and 
agricultural interests should remain alert to changing river 
conditions.

* Flood stage is 14.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast...Rise above flood stage by late Saturday night and 
  continue to rise to near 16.2 feet by Sunday afternoon.  It will 
  fall below flood stage by Monday morning.
* At 16.2 feet...Flooding begins in the Trails End area of E 116th 
  Street.  The lowest house in the area has one foot of water in its 
  basement.  Another resident has two feet of water in his garage.  
  Flooding along River Road in rural Carmel.  Some residents south of
  E 116th Street along River Drive East must park vehicles on high 
  ground.

* At 14.0 feet...High water closes East 77th Street near Mystic Bay. 
  River Road floods. River Edge Lane and River Road just north of 
  86th Street flood.  Lowest residential areas begin to flood on 
  River Edge Lane.  High water staff gage readings begin at 14 feet 
  and continue to 25 feet.

  state and county roads flood.  County Road 600 W just north of 
  river flooded by possibly more than two feet of water for a 
  considerable distance in Mary Long Cutoff Area.  County Roads 900 W
  and 750 S begin to flood in Greene County.

* At 22.9 feet...A 25 foot section of Levee Unit 8 failed at this 
  level on March 6 2011...flooding local roads behind the  levee.  
  Flooding not nearly as bad as June 2008 levee failure.  Flooding 
  was very close to one of the June 2008 failures.

  direct access to Wabash Valley Hospital.  During agricultural 
  season extensive crop damage occurs. Roads that flood include N 
  River Rd, SR 225 south of Battleground, Stair Road, Barton Beach 
  Rd, Division Rd and CR 700 W at the Granville Bridge Public Access 
  Site and CR 950 W. Pretty Prairie Rd near Moots Creek and lowest 
  portion of Goldsberry Rd likely flood.  Basement flooding along N 
  River Road, N 9th Street and Barton Beach Rd begins.

* Forecast...Rise above flood stage by Saturday afternoon and 
  continue to rise to near 25.6 feet by late Sunday night. 
* At 26.0 feet...A few agricultural levees fail. Water enters about 50
  homes in the North Lake, Izaak Walton, South Lake areas and near 
  Fort Harrison Country Club. Some evacuations are necessary. 
  Significant flooding in progress of industrial area on east bank 
  near I-70. Backwater extends up Lost Creek to Lafayette Street. 
  Land on west side of U.S. 150 and railroad tracks begins to flood.

  eastern Clark and Crawford counties in Illinois are impassible.  A 
  few mobile home residences and area along Hutson Creek just south 
  of Hutsonville flood.  Flood is at critical level for most of 
  levees.  Extensive seep water is behind levees.  Water surrounds 
  residential areas of Riverton, Riverview, Hutsonville and eastern 
  York.

  to rise to near 26.5 feet by Sunday January 19. Additional rises 
  are possible thereafter.
* At 26.7 feet...Wilson Road, a north-south road in Knox County near 
  the confluence of the White and Wabash Rivers, is flooded in the 
  Little Rock area in 2 or 3 places.  One location the water is too 
  deep for vehicles.  Extensive agricultural flooding progress in 
  areas that are not protected by levees.  Three Illinois township 
  roads south of Illinois 1 between Keensburg and Grayville are 
  flooded for a total of 10 miles. Access to oil fields in the 
  Keensburg and Grayville are blocked by high water.

Rain, heavy at times, will continue today and tomorrow. An
additional 2 to 4 inches of rain with locally higher amounts are
possible across central Indiana. A flood watch is in effect from
tonight through tomorrow night. Winds gusting to 35 kts, possibly
higher at times, are likely late tonight through tomorrow night. A
brief dry period is in store for Sunday and Monday, followed by
several more chances for rain throughout next week.

.NEAR TERM /Today and Tonight/...

Rain will continue through today and tonight across the Ohio
Valley. Some areas of central Indiana have already seen over an
inch of rain overnight. A deep trough situated over the west
central U.S paired with a strong, stagnant high pressure system
centered near the Bahamas are pulling in a deep surge of moisture
from the Gulf of Mexico to the region. Through the near term, an
additional inch to over an inch and a half of rain is expected to
fall over already saturated ground. The highest rain totals are
expected to fall across a wide swath from Vincennes to Muncie to
the northwest, and affecting the Wabash and White River basins. Warm
air advection will allow temperatures to get near 60 degrees
despite the rain and cloud coverage for today's high followed by
lows in the 50s. Winds will start to pick up late tonight as
pressure gradients tighten and a widespread low level jet forms
over the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Sustained wind speeds of
up to 20 kts and gusts to 35 kts are possible tonight.

Confidence is high in the continuation of rain throughout the

.SHORT TERM /Saturday through Sunday Night/...

The deep trough is expected to start taking a negative tilt early
Saturday morning and continuing to do so through the day and the
low deepens vertically Saturday while skirting around the
perimeter of the stagnant high pressure system over the Atlantic.
Models are in decent agreement that the low will track from Texas
up to the Great Lakes region throughout the day while deep Gulf
moisture continues to be pulled into the area. The models do,
however, still differ some in the timing of the low and how it
will evolve. At the moment, the Euro continues to show the low
deepening more so than other models... should it's solution pan
out, slightly higher rain amounts could be seen which would only
worsen expected flooding. An additional one to two inches of rain,
with locally higher amounts possible, is likely.

Winds will continue to be a concern throughout the day Saturday as
a strong, widespread low level jet will set up over the area
through the afternoon hours followed by a strong upper jet moving
in during the evening hours. Sustained winds up to 20 kts with
gusts approaching 40 kts at times. The forecast winds are nearing
advisory thresholds... held off on a wind advisory for Saturday
for the time being, but this may need to be readdressed should the
winds continue to trend higher. These gusty winds on top of the
saturated ground will lead to it being even easier for wind damage
to occur.

Finally, the cold front associated with this low pressure system
will move across the region Saturday overnight and closely followed
by dry air. Locations with lingering precip and wrap around
moisture could transition to snow late Saturday night for our more
northern counties, but little to no snow accumulations are
expected at this time.

Behind this system, a quick moving ridge during the day Sunday
followed by an upper short wave late in the day are likely. At this
time, dry but cloudy conditions are expected with cooler, but still
slightly above normal, temperatures.

.LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/...

Next week will start off dry with above normal temperatures as an
upper ridge moves over top. Then, a weak low pressure system will
bring a chances of rain showers to the area early Tuesday. Yet
another system will bring better chances of rain and mild
temperatures to the area by Wednesday. The ECMWF is an outlier and
likely too strong with the mid week low pressure system. Thus, kept
just chance PoPs in Wednesday and beyond. Will have to keep an eye
on this system, however. If it eventually trends stronger, more
moderate to heavy rain would prolong the inevitable river flooding.

As cold air moves in next Thursday, any lingering showers will
transition to snow.

Blend temperature trends look good and will be accepted.

GFS LAMP, SREF, radar and convective allowing models all support
MVFR and worse conditions with rain showers through the TAF period.

A low level jet will support low level wind shear through 14z and
again after 01z Saturday. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15
knots with gusts up to near 30s knots after 01z.
