A cold front will bring chances for rain Thursday, with another
frontal system bringing more rain chances for Sunday night through
Tuesday night. Temperatures will be near normal to below normal
through the period, with near freezing temperatures possible
Thursday night and Friday night.

.NEAR TERM (Rest of This Afternoon and Tonight)...
Issued at 307 PM EDT Wed Oct 14 2020

High clouds continue to drift across central Indiana this afternoon.
At the surface, gusty winds and warm temperatures were common.

Windy conditions will continue for the remainder of the afternoon
hours. A low level jet will approach the area, and mechanical mixing
will bring some higher winds to the surface. Expect gusts up to near
40 mph in the west late this afternoon as the jet approaches with
gusts over 30 mph elsewhere.

After sunset, loss of heating will greatly diminish mixing, but the
strong jet will be moving in. Believe the jet is strong enough that
even with loss of mixing gusts around 25-30mph are still possible
this evening.

A cold front will move into the area from the northwest after
midnight. The low level jet will be east of the front, so not
expecting strong winds with the front itself. Moisture will be quite
limited with the front, so am not expecting more than a sprinkle
with it.

The main push of colder air will not arrive until Thursday, so mild
temperatures (lows in the 50s) will continue overnight.

.SHORT TERM (Thursday and Thursday Night)...
Issued at 307 PM EDT Wed Oct 14 2020

The main cold front will be across the southeast forecast area by
the start of the Thursday period, but a secondary front will be
moving into the area from the northwest. An upper trough will be
digging into the area as well on Thursday. Isentropic lift and lift
from frontogenetical forcing will be present.

However, moisture remains a concern. Time/height cross sections show
mainly mid and high level moisture with the main push of forcing.
With the already dry lower levels, this could lead to some
evaporation of the rain (virga). The lower level moisture finally
arrives after better forcing and the main mid/high level moisture
exit.

Therefore will keep PoPs in the slight chance to chance category on
Thursday. What little moisture there is exits by Thursday night, so
will go dry then.

High pressure will build in on Thursday night and bring in much
colder air. The center of the high will remain west of the area, so
winds may not decouple completely. Skies will become mostly clear by
late in the night.

This will allow near freezing temperatures across much of the area
by sunrise Friday, along with areas of frost. Will continue to
highlight this threat in the Hazardous Weather Outlook and social
media.

.LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday/...
Issued at 239 AM EDT Thu Oct 15 2020

Today's ensembles continue to be in fairly good agreement on
suggesting a short wave trough will pass through the Great Lakes
in the Sunday to Monday time frame. Will keep PoPs going in those
periods to cover the passage of this system.

There is still a rather large variance among the ensemble members
with respect to a short wave trough early next week. Today's
ensembles are trending slightly towards the trough digging more
towards the Plains and Rockies by the middle of next week,
resulting in higher heights locally by that time. However, there
are still quite a few members that still indicate a more
progressive trough, scooting it through the Great Lakes in the
Tuesday and Wednesday periods.

Fro now, will continue to keep PoPs going in the later periods of
the extended to cover the range of solutions by that time. May
trim the PoPs some by next Wednesday, given the slight trend towards
a western trough and higher heights locally.

.AVIATION /Discussion for the 15/06Z TAF Issuance/...

Impacts:
Low level wind shear threat through Thu 07Z.

Sustained wind speeds of 12 kts with gusts to 20 kts through Thu
07Z.

Wind shift to the northwest on Thursday morning.

Discussion: The low level wind shear threat will remain in the
forecast through Thu 07Z due to a strong low level threat. Surface
winds will also remain above 12 kts with gusts up to 20 kts for a
few more hours, then tapering off. Meanwhile, VFR will be the
predominant flight category despite increasing clouds and low rain
chances with a cold front.

Confidence:

High confidence in wind shear and gusty winds early in TAF period.
High confidence in VFR conditions.
Low confidence in rain chances Thursday.

Discussion: Rain chances will return to central Indiana on Thursday
