Issued at 313 AM CDT Fri Jul 31 2020 A frontal boundary will remain situated across southern Illinois today, holding clouds in place across the southern half of the state. Some breaks will occur across north central Illinois today, however temperatures will continue to hold in the 70s to near 80 this afternoon. As a Low pressure system slides along the boundary in southern Illinois, rain showers are forecast for the next couple days, south of the I-72 corridor. The cooler temperatures continue through the weekend, with drier conditions Saturday night into Sunday morning. However, a cold front slides into the area Sunday night, bringing more precipitation to the region into the start of next week. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 313 AM CDT Fri Jul 31 2020 The frontal boundary that dropped through the region yesterday has stalled out across southern Illinois, where radar has showers sliding across early this morning. This activity should remain near, and south, of the I-70 corridor throughout much of the day. As the main Low pressure system begins to shift east today, expecting an increase in precip chances. Increased PoPs today, as the Low will try to cut-off in the upper levels today, deepening the moisture content. A Flash Flood Watch south of the ILX area was issued, however not anticipating the need for one over the southern 6 counties like yesterday as the boundary will remain south of the coverage area. Heading into the overnight period, expecting the Low to begin lifting into the Ohio River Valley. This will lift PoP chances across eastern Illinois overnight into the early morning hours Saturday. && .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) ISSUED AT 313 AM CDT Fri Jul 31 2020 As the Low lifts through the Ohio River Valley, expecting showers to push northward Saturday morning. Once the Low moves into the Ohio Valley region, this should begin the cutoff of precip across a majority of the Midwest. Unfortunately, there could be some return flow moisture that creates weak shower activity through Saturday afternoon across eastern Illinois. This system will finally get a push out of the region Sunday, as a cold frontal system drops in from the nw. With weak upper level flow, and no real driving force, this upper Low in eastern Canada will slowly churn. The frontal system will take time to exit the region, meaning showers and storms will be possible into next week. Sunday night and Monday look to be the best chances for widespread showers and storms, as the actual cold front slide through the Midwest. With some forcing, could see some stronger storms...however currently too far out for SPC to predict chances for severe weather. Temperatures over the next week will remain below average for this time of year. Which is a relief for many, as the heat and humidity were beginning to bring drought impacts. With forecasts in the 70s and low 80s for highs, and lows dropping to the 50s and 60s...this will allow for more enjoyable conditions around the Midwest. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night) Issued at 1143 PM CDT Thu Jul 30 2020 A few showers will linger well south of the terminal sites the rest of the night. No precip of significance is expected through tomorrow evening, despite an upper level shortwave from passing by to the south of Illinois. CAMs are showing some flare-up of showers by 16z Friday, especially for near SPI and DEC. Confidence is low that any rain will affect our TAF sites over the next 24 hours. Therefore, a dry forecast is expected. Clouds will continue to drift across the area, but at VFR levels. Have removed any mention of MVFR cigs tonight and Friday. Fog potential should be diminished by the steady winds, although a few locations in central IL could see light fog later tonight.
